"History of Christianity on the Big Island Influenced by missionaries who began arriving in the early 1800s, the Hawaiian Islands now maintain several historic mission churches and even continue to hold Sunday services in some. Hokuloa Church was built in 1852 by Reverend Lorenzo Lyons, who engaged the entire town to help with the construction. The area has ancient petroglyphs etched in volcanic rock, and the sugar cane train hauled sugar via a nearby rail line. Now home to Hokula United Church of Christ, the property remains a picturesque part of the Big Island's history."

This lava rock chapel is small but exquisitely beautiful! It is surrounded by a cemetery that features some extremely unique and interesting burial sites. If you come to visit, you will probably have it all to yourself. It's a unique opportunity to experience tranquility in a historic spot perched above the ocean. Built in 1957 to honor the first Hawaiian man to become a Christian, it offers stunning views!

Opukahaia Memorial Chapel Marking the home of Henry Opukahaia 1792-1818 Who inspired the first American board Mission to Hawaii in 1820 This cute little chapel sits up on a small hill by Punalu`u Beach. There is a bell and many old burial plots. I walked up the little road but it is accessible by car if you have issues walking.

Just up the hill from the black sand, very quiet and peaceful. A lovely view, and very introspective to walk the cemetery and read the names and dates. Worth the walk to have a few moments of introspection.
