23 Dive Bars, Saloons, and Taverns Where the Vibe Is Unbeatable

"In northern Switzerland, the city of Zurich operates as a global financial center. But its Old Town (also known as the Altstadt), showcases the quieter, historic side of the city. Nestled the heart of the Altstadt, in a building originally constructed as a residence for nobles more than 650 years ago, sits Oepfelchammer. The tavern is known for its long history and, more recently, its unique drinking ritual. The building earned its name after its stint as a convent’s apple storage unit. In the 17th century, the property became a bakery, and it was a baker who first got permission to start serving drinks in 1801. Today, the restaurant serves Swiss fare and fine wine. After 6:00 p.m., visitors to the tavern are only permitted to drink water, grape juice, or wine. But most importantly, and much more idiosyncratically, Oepfelchammer hosts a drinking ritual known as balkenprobe, or beam challenge. To attempt the challenge, participants scramble and kick their way up onto a ceiling beam. Then, they crawl over to the adjacent rafter and hang upside-down. A waiter brings over a glass of white wine and the inverted guest then attempts to down the entire glass without spilling it. (You can watch someone successfully complete the mission on YouTube.) Should they succeed, the winner adds their name to the collection of carvings on the wall. Anyone who initially fails is entitled to two more attempts. Regardless of the outcome, all who brave Oepfelchammer’s balkenprobe are entitled to a wholly unique kind of hangover." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

"Zurich's Oldest Preserved Pub The quaint, charming Rindermarkt is home to the Oepfelchammer, the city's oldest preserved pub. It serves terrific local wines in an all-wood setting with patrons’ names carved into the walls."

This place is an absolute gem! The location is very central, its cute little entrance opens up into a beautifully elegant space with a warm, inviting atmosphere. The staff are genuinely lovely and make you feel welcome from the moment you arrive. We ordered the duck breast and the meat loaf, and both dishes were exceptionally delicious—perfectly cooked and full of flavor. We couldn’t recommend this restaurant more!

Google
Oldest wine house of Zürich. Service is very friendly. Try to master the trick in the apero room to have your name scribes onto the wall. The food is traditional Swiss and is very tasty. A great selection of wine. Reservation needed for sure.

Google
Super cute restaurant with great service. We were recommended a local wine that ended up being fantastic. And the food was really great as well.

We thoroughly enjoyed our experience here! Andreas, Lucas and Caroline were very kind and accommodating! We absolutely loved the dishes we ordered and the wine pairing was excellent. The atmosphere was very lively and fun. If you’re looking for an authentic Swiss experience and menu, look no further! We will return the next time we are in Zurich!!!

Google
Hard to beat the atmosphere of this place, the energy is great and the history intriguing (no spoilers). The service was impeccable and mega friendly, nice chat with the owners and head of staff. Food is classic swiss and quality top notch..must visit, for the special occassionand challenge at hand..check it out!

Google
A nice restaurant in an old building serving traditional swiss dishes. The taste is a testimony of the quality of vegetables/meat being used. Has limited seating so booking in advance recommended.

Google
Warm Welcome & Incredible Food – A Truly Wonderful Dining Experience! From the moment I walked in, the service was truly world-class. The people there are incredibly friendly, going above and beyond to ensure everyone feels super comfortable and has a wonderful, welcoming experience. The food was equally outstanding—it was so delicious that we were completely focused on enjoying every bite and honestly didn't have time to take any photos. Highly recommend stopping by. You need to try this place!

Yelp
I remember many a good time 20 years ago at the Opfelchammer which, back then, was really just a bar. Now, it serves very expensive food. It's a shame but on a recent visit, the wonderful atmospheric "old wooden room" looked much the same.

Yelp
The Oepfelchammer, is a tavern that has been around since the 1300s, students from the University sometimes take a challenge to pull up onto a ceiling rafter, slide onto another rafter, and drink wine while their head is hanging upside down. We saw a group attempt this and one of girls actually did it! She earned a free bottle of wine and the privilege of carving her name onto a table. A memorable experience! Excellent service as well !

Yelp
OH MY GOD this place is a magnificent walk into a time machine to go back in time. The history of this place is fantastic and the vibe just can't help but be enjoyed. However, I enjoyed the food and drink - despite the hefty price. As others have said - if I could give it 6 stars I would. You can't say you've been to Zurich until you've had some food and drink here.

Yelp
Ok, so a Swiss guy took me here, or else I never would have even heard of this place. It was autumn, so I ordered off the seasonal menu. Well, he helped me order off the seasonal menu. Whatever it was that I ate, it was delicious. I think it may have been some game hen or something like that. And the wine was delicious, too. I know this review isn't very helpful because I have no idea what I ate, but I was on a date, and I didn't want to look like a lame-o by asking what everything was and taking too many photos. I did manage to take 2 photos of the desserts, citing how pretty they were. ;) One was some sort of frozen chocolate mousse, and the other was Oepfelchüechli gebacken mit lauwarmer Vanillesauce (Apple beignets with luke-warm vanilla sauce), which he told me was quite traditional. I LOVED the place with its rustic wood decor and homey artifacts adorning all the nooks and crannies. According to their website (if Google Translate serves me right), this traditional hangout of the writer Gottfried Keller is the oldest preserved tavern in Zürich. A big two thumbs up from me for great food and ambiance.

Yelp
Awesome place! Unassuming from the outside, this old building houses a popular and atmospheric restaurant, the highlight of which is the top room which holds a challenge. Basically if you can get a table in the top room you are faced with the challenge of climbing through 2 beams on the ceiling, before hanging upside down and drinking a glass of the local vino. If you can do this you are free to carve your name into the walls, benches and tables. As you can imagine the room looks very interesting. The food is excellent - but not cheap! We had salad to start, then the veal, with the apple donuts to finish - very tasty - but check the prices beforehand to see if it's in your budget. I wasn't paying, thankfully. If you think the Swiss are dull then try eating here - and take up the challenge in the top room. Instructions are provided by the eccentric owner!!

Yelp
I wish I could give this place 6 stars. From the food, to the service, the wine and the atmosphere, everything was off the charts. A friend and I were in Zurich for the night and happened to pick this place for our meal. I'd encourage you to sit in their old wine room and if the older gentlemen with the curly mustache waits on you, just ask what he recommends. We had the duck carpaccio, the veal in mushroom sauce, hash browns and schnitzel. All were great. After our meal I took (and failed) the challenge of the beams... I won't give any more detail but will say the entire room and stopped to watch the feat. Lastly - this is my second yelp review ever. The first was for horrible service, food, etc. I'm glad I could write such a good one.

Yelp
had an excellent meal here with friends very historic building with a great interior. menu is straight-forward swiss classics, but well-prepared with nice service. on the higher end in terms of prices, but then, oepfelchammer is in the heart of the old town. a good alternative to some of the more obvious touristy places near by.
