The Best Hotels in Amsterdam

"The College is a 10-minute walk from the Concertgebouw and Big Three museums in one direction, and the cafes and restaurants of De Pijp in the other. Its name refers to both its 19th-century incarnation as a school and its current function as training hotel for hospitality-industry students. This means the occasional learner’s blip in service, but also that room rates are good value. Sometimes-gloomy school rooms and corridors are enlivened by large arrangements of flowers, contemporary Dutch art, and soothing colors. Rooms are comfortable, and the restaurant serves tasty standards by learner-chefs." - Amber Port

"The College Hotel is a grandiose Dutch Neo-Renaissance building with soaring arches and ceilings, a sunny courtyard filled with olive trees, and dramatic modern interiors in rich velvet, crystal chandeliers, and dark woods. Amsterdam ’s beautiful and artsy flock to its trendy bar, a warmly lit affair with open fireplaces and overstuffed sofas, and its modern Dutch restaurant is one of the coolest in the city. Surely, this must be one of the Dutch capital’s most expensive hotels, reserved only for the rich and famous, right? Wrong. Housed in a 19th-century school, The College Hotel employs and trains students in the luxury hospitality industry, which means that its rates are surprisingly affordable for a hotel of its caliber. The young staff are all friendly and helpful, although service is not always as smooth as it might be at a place with a more experienced team. But that’s a small price to pay for a stay this cool and ideally located, just down the street from the Museumplein in the fashionable Zuid neighborhood."

The College Hotel

"The entire ground floor is public space: To the left of the entrance is the chic reception desk, made of leather and mother-of-pearl, and to the right high-ceilinged hallways lead to a colorful bar with patterned-velvet chairs and couches and, beyond, an airy white-brick-and-glass dining room that was once the gymnasium. The 40 rooms, with big TVs, glass showers, and black-lacquer doors and wardrobes, are sleek but cozy; the German manufacturer of their sensually soft sheets also makes shirts for Gucci and Prada. The service throughout is thoughtful and sincere."

A beautiful hotel centrally located on tram lines they allow you to get anywhere else in the city. It’s particularly close to the Van Gogh and modern art museum. The hotel is a converted boarding school with good facilities, a bar, lounge, library and dining room. Plus a courtyard that has been exquisitely furnished. The staff has been knowledgeable, responsive and highly attentive. The rooms are perfect with a desk and minibar. The architecture is amazing, great attention to detail. Incredible brickwork (like most of Amsterdam) and well maintained grounds.

I would never recommend this property, especially compared to other Marriott options in Amsterdam. I am a Platinum member and have stayed at both the W Amsterdam and the Renaissance. Both of those hotels are in far better locations and, more importantly, have genuinely hospitable staff who understand customer service. Unfortunately, The College Hotel falls short on every front. First, I requested to use my Suite Night Awards well in advance, only to have them denied at the last minute—literally the day before arrival. Second, after traveling for 1.5 days from the Comoros, I arrived slightly early and asked if I could check in. Even though the room was empty and ready, the staff flatly refused. What was most disappointing wasn’t the denial itself but the attitude that came with it—cold, dismissive, and entirely lacking empathy. The front desk here feels snotty and detached, as if they forget who the paying guest is. Instead of a warm welcome, you are treated like a nuisance. Hospitality should never feel transactional or begrudging, but sadly that’s exactly how this property operates. For anyone considering a Marriott stay in Amsterdam, I would strongly suggest choosing the W or the Renaissance. Both are better located, far more professional, and actually value their guests. The College Hotel is an unfortunate miss within the Marriott portfolio. *update, the hotel did check us in slightly early after what felt like exchange in which our disappointment in the property was expressed. The unfortunate thing was the ask itself was really very little of a hotel that is not full and the hospitality of the staff was still numb and cold. Great job team, still not worth the money or time. Another note is the showers seem to cycle on and off with hot water. If you like a hot shower ( not warm but hot) this probably is not the right hotel, at least not in room 119.

Our stay at The College Hotel was absolutely wonderful. The property is stunning with a perfect blend of luxury, comfort, and charm. From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere felt both elegant and welcoming. Our room was beautifully designed and incredibly comfortable, making it the perfect retreat after a day exploring Amsterdam. They have art all over the hotel elevating to an artsy the experience. A special thank-you to Marc, the hotel manager, who truly made our stay exceptional. He went above and beyond, sharing fantastic local recommendations for dining, hidden gems to explore, and ways to experience the city like a local. His hospitality and personal touch added so much to our trip. If you’re looking for a luxurious artsy stay with outstanding service and authentic Amsterdam character, The College Hotel is the place to be. Highly recommended!

Google
This stay was absolutely amazing, start to finish. The staff were extremely helpful upon check in, making sure everything was in order, from the cleaning staff who put the room together meticulously with a personalized note, to Peter the kind and courteous doorman ensuring as soon as we entered the doors we had all our stuff up to our room with no extra work done. To the Amsterdam Staff at The College Hotel thank you so much!

Google
Very nice setting and building not too far from the center (easy to reach with tram). Our room had an open bathroom with no door and it was an issue for privacy reasons… so I had to take a walk while my roommate was showering!! Also the shower drain did not work properly and we had to wait for an intervention of the technician because the shower room was flooded. The hotel was kind enough to offer a free breakfast for the inconvenience. Overall it was an ok experience. The nicest think is the building itself and its very tasteful renovation

Google
During my stay, whenever I had any issues, the hotel staff were very friendly and eager to help. The room was clean and spacious, and when I checked out, Doorman Peter was extremely kind and helpful with my luggage. Overall, it was a great experience. The only small downside is that the building was converted from an old college, so the plumbing is a bit dated, the water pressure and temperature can be a little unstable.

Exquisite hotel! Gorgeous 19th c. former boy’s boarding school with imaginative, unique decorative touches evocative with its history. Immaculate, pleasant scent throughout hotel, faux wooden floors in rooms; friendly and helpful staff; nuts, sparkling and still water, sparkling apple juice and espresso provided in room daily at no extra charge. Our room had a 20 ft. ceiling!! Very convenient to local trams and restaurants.

Upon my arrival, Younlee immediately began taking care of me. I had mentioned I had a long day because of work - She provided me a welcome drink, arranged for a taxi service go pick me up to go to the airport in the morning, and brought me a European adapter because I lost mine. When I travel and there's an option to go to a College, Autograph Collection, I always choose it because I know the service is spectacular and the staff always goes above and beyond. Thank you, Autograph Collection and thank you Younlee for being lovely and going above and beyond! When I come back to Amsterdam for business or for personal reasons, I will definitely be coming back.

Yelp
The College Hotel is located in a historic building with a monumental status. It was constructed in 1894 and has exclusively served as a school building. When it converted to a hotel in 2004, the architectural status required many of the elements to stay; the hotel has 40 different authentic rooms, no two rooms are the same. At one point this was a boy's school, so there are many touches where the "naughty schoolboys" spray painted the paintings or marked the school tables (wink wink). Our suite is comfortable with high ceilings, large windows, large bathroom (with a desk), complimentary mini bar, personalized room scent, etc. It's conveniently located to the Museumplein, very accommodating staff.

Yelp
This is the second hotel we stayed at while in Amsterdam. It's a former school building and the interior definitely gives you a bit of Hogwarts vibe which I really liked. The rooms are a bit awkwardly shaped but it was comfortable and cozy. The breakfast is much smaller than the Anantara but was very good. There's also a library where you are welcome to leave or take books and I picked up a new book as a result. Would definitely stay here again and would recommend it to others.

Yelp
The College Hotel is a 4-star boutique hotel in a nineteenth-century building that used to be an all boys school. We chose this hotel because of its proximity to many of the city's attractions to include being walking distance to many of the museums we were interested in. The hotel reminded me a little of Hogwarts, which made it that much better. The hotel staff was great at guiding us where to go to eat and how to best get around Amsterdam. The room and bed were comfortable and it was cute that we were given a "school" bag and a map of the building when it used to be a school. We loved our stay and would highly recommend staying here.

Yelp
The College Hotel was a delight from beginning to end. The building was beautiful. Our room was charming and quirky, and filled with everything to make our stay pleasant and comfortable. The window seat onto the courtyard was an added delight! Close to museums, eateries and markets. The staff was extraordinary. There was never a time when entering or leaving that we were not greeted with inquiries over what we needed. I have traveled for business extensively for most of my career, and I can truthfully say that I have never felt so welcomed or pampered. If it were possible to take Fabrizio with me when we left, I would have done so. His humor and genuine care for our well-being during our stay was amazing. His suggestions for our day were always spot on, and when we had an issue with a tour operator, he jumped in feet first to resolve it. Book this hotel whenever possible. You WILL NOT regret it!

Yelp
Love everything about this hotel but the horrible Wifi, we ended up use our own provider instead! Digital Creators, business travelers, unfortunately not a good spot for you to stay or work on the go. I did told the front desk and they were very apologetic. So make sure you ask before check when you check in. Second floor got cute room with glass window on the ceiling if love sunlight sk it was perfect for us. Summer in Amsterdam offers long day, sunset is around 9-10 PM... We love it, bright natural lighting. Walking distance to everything, about 10-15 mins walk to the Museum Quarter (Rijk, Van Gough, MoCo and a lot more). A lot of restaurants and coffee shops nearby, Chinese, Sushi, patisseries and more, as well as Mondi inside the hotel, great breakfast and Caribbean cuisine. It's about 20 minutes walk to the canals and center district, it's walkable enough, and quiet away from the young tourists area. As jet lagged from California PST time, you would like a quiet place to sleep at night. If you are a Marriott Bonvoy Platinum, Titanium, and Ambassador elites , your breakfast is included! Overall, a good experience for us!

Yelp
This is an excellent hotel. Our bed is comfortable, our room enormous by European standards, and the hotel spotless. The property is a very short walk to the nearest light rail station, and from there the city is at your disposal. If you prefer to hoof it entirely, it's about a 10-minute minutes to the Van Gogh museum and about 30 minutes to the tourist district. The neighborhood seems nice and safe. We'll stay here again when next we visit Amsterdam.

Yelp
TERRIBLE HOTEL. Literally the worst experience I have ever had with a hotel. I left some of my things in the room, they went missing, and the staff refused to do anything about it. They also refuse to reimburse me. It was hundreds of dollars worth of stuff. To top it all off, I did not receive an ounce of compassion from them, even after saying "Please try to empathize with me." They might think a stranger on the street took the stuff from my bag. But the only items missing from my bag were things I used in the hotel room. What would a pickpocket want with my toothpaste or my American charger? Please, if you value your things, DO NOT STAY HERE.

Yelp
I did not go to the rooms, so this is just for the public areas. It is a 4 stars hotel and it shows. Great renovation an old Amsterdam school. Run by students of the hotel school, it is very well managed. All very young people with a great attitude. The bar is quite big and very welcoming. I had NYE dinner here and it was very well organised with live music and DJ and a very pleasant family atmosphere. Chef entrees with great flavours and very nice presentation. They whines were not meeting the same level. I heard the high tea is good. They have a very big outside patio where you can lounge and have any meal or drinks. Bike and moped rental is offered. Very walkable distance from museumplein (actually right across), also very close to the heart of the city. Museum Quarteer is a very quite area, very nice. Tram stop right in front of the Hotel to reach anything in the city, from West to Central Station and so on.

Yelp
These other reviews freak me out (I don't trust hotels) because I got a completely fantastic room for a lovely price 2 winters ago. Nice building, but on property dining was just okay, and a little cramped. Couldn't ask for a classier or more comfortable jumping off point
google avatar

Yelp
This hotel, located in a very renovated older building ("older" has a different meaning here, compared to the US); is operated as a educational program for students pursuing an education in the hospitality industry. The staff is young, bright, and incredibly service oriented. Every facet of this hotel gets high marks. The rooms are large (compared with typical European rooms) and well appointed. The food at the hotel restaurant is quite good. The hotel is walking distance to the Van Gogh Museum and other attractions. I will be sad to leave here.

Yelp
First time in Amsterdam and we stayed here for my 30th birthday. A lovely hotel with modern classic interior and at a good price. Just around the corner from the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh, it's easy to get to from the Airport by train (€5) and tram (€2.90) I don't see the need to get a taxi, it was so simple, easy and cheap. 60% of the staff are trainees in the hospitality industry which has its pros and cons. They are all really keen and enthusiastic but there are just some things that are not executed to the very highest level but in no way was it poor, you could just tell it wasn't polished. We thoroughly enjoyed this part of the experience as I work in hospitality and couldn't fault them for their exuberance and it was nice to see them develop. I'd happily stay there again and have already recommended eating there to my Aunt who arrived the day we left...

Yelp
Upscale, but no snooty. Beautiful building. I love their Irish coffee!

Kevin F.

Yelp
This hotel did not live up to its reputation. The rooms were OK, clean with a fairly comfortable bed, but it was noisy, the Internet connection would not work and it was pricey. The staff were friendly and did help with directions to get around the city but did not advise us properly on getting from the train terminal to the cruise terminal (take the tram or a taxi;do NOT try to tote your luggage). Not worth the money ($333.00/night).

Yelp
A great mix of old and new. It's a nicely renovated old building & a nice example of Dutch design. The staff are young and friendly. The location seemed decent.

Tracey K.

Yelp
I really enjoyed this place! I was able to get a very good price through the hotel's website which even included wifi and a breakfast at their lovely restaurant. Prior to this stay, I was at an NH hotel and compared to the NH's ikea-like decor, the college hotel was more what I had in mind when visiting a country with such rich history. Less than 5 min walk to the Museum district and also to a very high end shopping area (Hermes, Versace, etc). From here I was also able to take a pretty long walk down to Dam square and back. Neighborhood is safe. This would be a great hotel for a business gathering. and just as an FYI, taxi from College hotel to Schipol airport is 45 Euro and took about 20 minutes prior to rush hour traffic (7:30 am). Even with the taxi cost, room was still less than the hotels near the airport.

Yelp
First time in Amsterdam and glad we chose to stay at The College Hotel. Walking distance to the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh, plus easy access to the trams. And many good restaurants walking distance; Restaurant Elements is highly recommended and is right across the street. Plus the hotel bar is comfy yet chic and the English bartender makes a fantastic White Russian!! When the weather cooperates, the outside patio is divine.

Yelp
Honestly I don't know where these other reviewers stayed because my experience could not be more different. The most depressing hotel room I've ever been in. Having just left the charm of a canal side hotel I could not have landed in a more awful spot. The rooms are dark smell of sewage, in need of a good cleaning/touch up paint, dirty bed and after about 15 minutes of looking for the source of strange beeping I found the wireless phone for the room. I was just at the Hotel Estherea for nearly half the price and wish I could click my heels 3 times to return there. An awful last evening in Amsterdam for sure - stay elsewhere, this place may look cool but it's lacking in every other aspect.

Travis H.

Yelp
Unbelievably nice staff. The young lady working the desk looked like Uma Thurman in Kill Bill. The room was the most spacious we had in Amsterdam, just gorgeous, with a two story loft ceiling and skylight. It's A bit far from the city center and things to close up around there after 6 PM so it's an excellent place to rest the night before you go to the airport.
