"Monastiraki Square Centered arounda flea market, Monastiraki Square is busywith musicians, beggars, street performers, and tourists. Sometimes you'll hear fireworks going off here, for no particular reason. Sometimes there'll be full-on drum circles. The flea marketitself is diverse. You'll find all the regular 'ol touristy souvenirs, but also many locally produced foods.Go to the cheese shop for cheese, the bakery for bread, etc. The meat market and fish market are also nearby, but those are only for the brave."

A lively and colorful market in the heart of Athens! Great place to wander, shop for souvenirs, antiques, and handmade items. Fun atmosphere with street music, friendly vendors, and plenty of cafés nearby. A must-visit for a taste of local culture.

Great place to pick up some memories to take home. A lot of items are repeated throughout the shops, so take your time browsing to find your favourite designs and best prices. It's alley upon alley of beautifully crafted gifts and souvenirs. The postcard shops don't sell stamps but the post office is not far. Make sure to check the Best Before/Expiry date on any food items. Easy to get to by Monastiraki metro station. Plenty of restaurants in the area to eat and take a rest as well, if you don't mind paying a little tourist tax.

At first glance it’s just a narrow street with repetitive souvenirs being sold from store to store, but if you go to the end and turn right, you’ll get the real flea market. It’s less crowded and shady. Ready lovely to just browse and hassle free.

This is take great place to shop for souvenirs, jewelry, coins, antiques, and just about anything you can imagine. The prices are quite reasonable and it's not very expensive. There are also many, many nice restaurants in this area along with kiosks where you can buy super cheap drinks like water, energy drinks, beer, and Europeans love to smoke, so you can also get cheap smokes everywhere. It is well with the trip.

Unending rows of all kinds of shops - souvenir stores, clothing stores, leather goods, and antique stalls. Depending on the day of the week and the time of day, it may be relatively calm (first thing in the morning) or overrun with tourists. I found the prices to be touristy-high but lower than in other areas. Most goods appeared to be made in Greece.

The Monastiraki Flea Market is one of my favourite places in Athens, and not just because of what you can buy there. The treasures on offer range from the genuinely traditional — komboloi, bouzoukis, old records — to the utterly absurd, like mobile phone cases with cat faces proudly stamped “Made in China.” It’s this mix that makes the place irresistible. But what really matters here isn’t the merchandise, it’s the atmosphere. The market is alive with chatter, bargaining, laughter, and the constant ebb and flow of locals and travellers. You’ll catch the smell of souvlaki curling through the air, hear snippets of music from a nearby stall, and if you take a turn into one of the side alleys, you’ll find cafés perfect for sitting with a coffee while watching the whole buzzing theatre play out around you. It’s less about consumption and more about immersion — though yes, you might walk away with a komboloi, a bouzouki, and, why not, a ridiculous cat phone case. Monastiraki is a must in Athens, because it gives you all of Athens in miniature: history, humour, chaos, and charm.

The flea market turned out to be much smaller than I expected. Instead of the lively local atmosphere I was hoping for, most of the stalls are now taken over by tourist-oriented shops selling the usual souvenirs you’ll find all over the city centre. There are still a few genuine flea and antique shops scattered around, and if you look closely you can find some interesting stuff. But overall, the market doesn't have an authentic, local feel.

Street-life with colours, calls, aromas and sounds to stimulate the senses. It's a great place to wander. You'll see all the expected touristy stuff, plenty of opportunities for gift shopping, and the odd different place to catch your eye, like the used records store or second hand clothing. We were there in the early evening and it was busy but not overcrowded. Don't go there to shop on purpose or with a specific item in mind. Go to see what you can find and be surprised by.
