I was very excited to try Trostel's Greenbriar after looking at other Yelp reviews and pictures. The prime rib especially looked simply amazing, and I am an avid prime rib aficionado. So, my favorite dining companion and I set out to do just that.
Since we were coming during prime Saturday dining hours, we decided to make reservations. The hostess I spoke to on the phone strongly recommended doing so, as well. I would repeat this recommendation to anyone coming in for dinner on Friday or Saturday. This place gets VERY busy for dinner.
We arrived at the restaurant around 730PM, and just as promised, it was packed. We ordered a drink at the bar while we waited for them to ready our table. We had just barely gotten our drinks when the hostess let us know that our table was ready. Excellent!
The decor inside was warm and inviting, with enough light for dinner and conversation, but not enough to be fatiguing. It was pleasantly warm inside. They definitely didn't care about turning tables over quickly, although based on observing the staff, they were exceedingly efficient at bussing tables when people left.
We started our meal with the grilled shrimp appetizer. It arrived promptly. It looked and smelled great. The taste was great. It was nicely grilled with good char marks and excellent seasoning. It was served over a fruit salsa that complimented the shrimp quite nicely.
For dinner I didn't even need to read the menu. I was here for the prime rib! I ordered the large 16oz portion medium rare, with a Cesar salad and a side of mashed potatoes. My dining companion ordered the Steak Diane special, blue rare (she likes her steak still moving), with fried brussel sprouts instead of fingerling potatoes, and a side of French onion soup.
It didn't take long at all before our food was out. My cesar salad was quite proper. It came with sliced anchovies, dressed with their own creamy cesar dressing made in-house. It was delicious. My dining companion's french onion soup was very much on point. It came with lots of onions and a hearty piece of bread with lots of cheese.
As soon as our entrees arrived, my mouth began watering. My prime rib looked succulent and beautifully cooked. My companion's Steak Diane also looked fantastic. She squeaked with delight as she cut into it and found it was indeed as rare as she hoped it would be.
My first bite of prime rib necessitated closing my eyes and letting out a delighted groan. It was practically perfect. Tender, juicy, and downright irresistible. I quickly began devouring it, as while I wanted to savor it, it was just that good.
The Steak Diane was also amazingly tender and melt in your mouth, even at blue rare. Her fried brussel sprouts made me envious. They were wonderfully caramelized with a crispy outer layer and a delicious flavor. It kind of made me wish I had done the same. The mashed potatoes were good, but we are talking downright amazing fried brussel sprouts here, people!
There were numerous delicious looking desserts on the menu, but we were too full. We had a wonderful time. I highly recommend Trostel's Greenbriar to anyone looking for four-star fine dining at three-star prices. Our bill was just over $100, but that's hardly surprising when you're talking about food of this calibre. There are certainly some less expensive items if you're on a budget, but the high end entrees will certainly put a smile on your face.
This place has fast, exceptional service. Mark this one down for special occasions or if you are hoping to impress someone. They'll certainly leave happy. I know we did!
