The museum is in a very sad state of neglect and disrepair. It has so much potential to preserve and share the rich history and culture of Sabah. Instead, most of its buildings are closed for unknown reasons and seemingly for an indefinite length of time. I came here to learn about Sabah, but there was nothing to see at all. The few exhibits that are open lack a common theme. It felt more like a dumping ground of old stuff that nobody wanted. It is sad to see many overseas tourists who came all the way here had to leave disappointingly. I would not recommend coming here until the 'renovations' are completed.

Beautiful places to see in sabah. The old train went back to the 1880s. Sabah Museum, the complex, also includes an ethnobotanical garden, a zoo, and a heritage village. The museum was closed when I visited on 25 December 2024. Its main purpose is to collect, preserve, and conserve collections related to ethnography, history, art, botany, zoology, and conduct research on the heritage and culture of Sabah.

Jan 2025 - main museum temporarily closed until further notice. Worth goingis the locomotive gallery. Wealth of information of the Beaufort train, old artifacts from the rail. The souvenir shop sells reasonable price. Best was many books publications sold, especially on field guides, nature and environmental, natural history, etc The premise has also a herb garden, aquatic pond and mini village depicting various ethnic village houses. Most of the houses can be entered, although a bit rickety.

I remember going to this museum with my parents and family. It was very exciting and fun. Apart from seeing the history, I also watched like drama stories about Malaysia, especially Sabah. How it was formed, and the long process of creating a harmonious, peaceful and peaceful state like it is now. Apart from learning, i was able to take pictures in many beautiful spots for photography. The memories are unforgettable.

The state museum in Kota Kinabalu has been closed for renovations since September 2024, though the official website still misleadingly shows it as open. Upon arriving and discovering the museum was closed, we decided to explore the cultural village located within the same compound. The cultural village, unfortunately, feels neglected and depleted, with many of the structures showing signs of significant wear and tear. Even the pathway leading to the village is broken and poorly maintained, making it less accessible and somewhat unsafe for visitors. That said, Phase Two of the cultural village stands out as being in much better condition, with some areas appearing better preserved. While the cultural village offers a glimpse into the traditional lifestyles and architecture of Sabah’s indigenous communities, its current state of neglect and disrepair makes it a disappointing experience. The broken pathways and depleted structures diminish its appeal, and despite the better condition of Phase Two, the visit feels like a waste of time.

Main Museum closed but still charged the entire fee for just exterior areas. The whole premise is neglected with majority of structures dilapidated. Would recommend to avoid till goverment seriously looks into reviving this.

Great insight into the history and world of Sabah and Borneo more widely. When we went there were some exhibitions still being completed but the whale skeleton and various stuffed species really helped identify them in the rainforest. The headhunters and tribal dress shows were fascinating

The museum is closed and it would have been 5 stars if it was open.. The area has some displays beside the museum entrance itself. So we grab some shots of the exhibits but the counter says the museum main hall is closed. She did try to explain but she herself is not sure of the main reason, but it's ok anyway. It would have been interesting to learn more but I guess our opportunity was limited. So yeah, we walked around and found other exhibits. Check out our images and just enjoy what we managed to capture too ya. Cheers!!
