19 Best Things to Do in Bali | Condé Nast Traveler

"This tourist magnet might look like an open-air zoo attraction, but Ubud Monkey Forest is actually a holy site with a 1000-plus band of long-tailed Balinese macaques in their natural habitat. As cantankerous as some of the monkeys can be—dangling jewelry, bags, and conspicuous food will invite aggressive sticky fingers—the primates are considered sacred by Balinese Hindus who come to pray in the complex's three ancient temples." - Travis Levius

The Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary is a magical blend of lush jungle, ancient temples, and playful wildlife right in the heart of Ubud. Walking through the moss-covered paths, surrounded by towering trees and sacred sculptures, felt like stepping into a different world. The monkeys were curious, energetic, and often hilarious. As long as you follow the simple rules (don’t feed them, keep your belongings secure, and don’t make eye contact), it’s a peaceful and awe-inspiring experience. I especially loved watching the baby monkeys play and interact with their families, it’s nature at its best. The grounds are well-maintained, and there's a deep spiritual atmosphere here. It’s more than just a tourist spot, it’s a sacred place that’s been respectfully preserved. Highly recommend this place if you're in Bali. It’s one of those rare places where culture, nature, and a bit of fun all come together beautifully. Tip: Go early in the morning when it's less crowded and the light is perfect for photos. Make sure to bring a secure bag and don’t carry any snacks, these clever little guys will find them!

Our visit to the Sacred Monkey Forest in Ubud was one of the most unforgettable highlights of our trip to Bali as a couple. From the moment we entered the lush, green sanctuary, we were transported into a magical world where nature, culture, and wildlife coexist in the most serene and fascinating way. The towering ancient trees and moss-covered statues created an almost otherworldly atmosphere—perfect for strolling hand in hand and taking in the beauty and spirituality of the space. The Balinese architecture and sacred temples scattered throughout the forest added a deep cultural richness to the experience. The monkeys themselves were a joy to watch—cheeky, clever, and completely in their element. We followed the guidelines and kept a respectful distance, which allowed us to enjoy their antics without feeling uneasy. Watching them play, groom, and leap through the trees was pure entertainment, and seeing the babies clinging to their mothers was heart-melting. What made it extra special as a couple was how peaceful and bonding the experience felt. It wasn’t just a tourist attraction—it was a walk through living, breathing spirituality and nature. We took time to sit on a bench together, surrounded by ancient trees and the sound of the forest, just soaking it all in. Truly a memory we’ll always share. Highly recommend visiting early in the morning to avoid the crowds and enjoy the quiet majesty of the place. Whether you’re seeking connection, culture, or just a bit of cheeky monkey fun, this sanctuary is a must-visit. A perfect stop for couples exploring the heart of Ubud.

The setting is beautiful. You find yourself in a jungle right in the middle of the city. There are many monkeys, and they are very cute. If you leave them alone, they won't bother you. They were very calm. The surroundings are stunning, and the area is quite large. You can also hire a photographer if you wish. It was a wonderful experience. Buying tickets was very easy, and there wasn't a large crowd.

Beautiful forest full of nature, culture, and cheeky monkeys. The Monkey Forest in Ubud is one of Bali’s most popular attractions — and it’s easy to see why. It’s not just a tourist spot, but a sacred place with deep spiritual significance for the Balinese people. The lush forest is home to hundreds of long-tailed macaques who roam freely among ancient temples, moss-covered statues, and towering trees. The atmosphere is peaceful and green, with stone pathways leading you through dense jungle areas, rivers, and beautiful traditional architecture. The monkeys are everywhere — playful, clever, and sometimes a little sneaky! They may try to grab your water bottle, sunglasses, or snacks, so keep your belongings secure and avoid direct eye contact. Despite that, the experience is incredible. It feels like stepping into another world where nature, wildlife, and culture meet in harmony. The sanctuary is clean, well-maintained, and easy to explore at your own pace. Staff members are positioned throughout the area and do a good job monitoring the monkeys and helping visitors. There are also signs reminding you of safety tips, which are worth reading before you go in. Whether you're an animal lover, nature enthusiast, or just looking for a peaceful yet fun place to explore, the Monkey Forest is a must-visit while in Ubud.

Review: Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary Visit 🐒🌿 Visiting the Monkey Sacred Forest was a truly enchanting experience. The temple is home to many lovely monkeys, including adorable babies that added so much charm to the atmosphere. They were playful, and it was fascinating to observe them in such a serene setting. The Sanctuary grounds themselves are stunning, with intricately sculpted walls and stone carvings that tell stories of history and tradition. Walking through the lush greenery and sacred statues created a peaceful and almost magical vibe. A must-visit if you love nature, culture, and a bit of wildlife all in one place. Just be sure to respect the monkeys and avoid bringing loose food!

We had a really fun time visiting the Monkey Forest. It’s a great activity for couples — relaxing, interesting, and a bit adventurous. The monkeys were surprisingly friendly and fun to watch up close. It was also really cool to see how they live and interact in such a natural setting. The staff were very kind and helpful, making sure everyone was safe and informed. One thing to keep in mind: there are quite a lot of insects, especially mosquitoes, so definitely bring some repellent. Overall, a great experience and definitely worth a visit!

experience with the least aggressive monkeys we've seen so far. They were still curious and a bit mischievous, so keep loose items out of your pockets, but overall it felt very safe. The area was clean and well kept, and surprisingly not crowded even during the busy season. We got some adorable photos, and for a small fee a staff member helped us get some awesome selfies with the monkeys. Definitely worth a visit, especially if you're traveling with kids.

The Sacred Monkey Forest isn’t just about the monkeys — although they are super cheeky and fun to watch! What really stood out to me were the mystical vibes and the beautiful, peaceful atmosphere. I went for a simple sightseeing trip and ended up feeling like I had stepped into a different world — full of old temples, giant trees, mossy statues, and little hidden corners that felt almost magical. It’s the kind of place where you just want to slow down, breathe, and take it all in. Highly recommend if you’re in Ubud — especially if you love nature, culture, or just need a quiet break from the busy side of Bali. Just a heads up: the monkeys are clever, so keep your sunglasses and snacks hidden! 🐒💚
