24 Best Things to Do in Bali

"A nearly 40-acre conservation area sheltering more than 1,200 long-tailed macaques amid sacred tree species and a 14th-century religious complex; visitors can observe lively monkey families and explore temples and carved caves while following site guidelines such as keeping distance and avoiding bringing food." - Lisa Ritchie Lisa Ritchie A dual American and British citizen, Lisa Ritchie is a writer and editor based in New York City. "This tourist magnet might look like an open-air zoo attraction, but Ubud Monkey Forest is actually a holy site with a 1000-plus band of long-tailed Balinese macaques in their natural habitat. As cantankerous as some of the monkeys can be—dangling jewelry, bags, and conspicuous food will invite aggressive sticky fingers—the primates are considered sacred by Balinese Hindus who come to pray in the complex's three ancient temples." - Travis Levius

The Sacred Monkey Forest in Ubud was one of the highlights of my trip to Bali. The moment you step inside, you feel like you’ve entered a magical jungle—huge banyan trees, moss-covered statues, and peaceful temple ruins all hidden within the forest. It’s not just a tourist attraction, it really feels like a sacred place. Of course, the monkeys are the stars here. They’re playful, cheeky, and endlessly entertaining to watch. I loved seeing them jump from tree to tree, care for their babies, and interact naturally with each other. It felt like being a guest in their world rather than just looking at animals behind cages. What impressed me most is how well the sanctuary is maintained. The paths are clean and easy to walk, the temples are stunning, and there are staff around to make sure both visitors and monkeys stay safe. I also appreciated the clear rules—they remind you to respect the animals and enjoy observing them without disturbing their natural behavior or even to feed them. I’d recommend going in the morning when it’s cooler and less crowded. Bring your camera (you’ll want a hundred photos!), but keep your belongings secure because the monkeys are curious and love to “borrow” things.

The Monkey Forest in Ubud is exactly what the name promises, lots of monkeys in a temple and forest setting. It is basically a big park where you wander among old stone carvings, tall trees, and troops of macaques that clearly think they own the place. It is a nice spot for a walk, with shady paths and a bit of atmosphere from the temples scattered around. The monkeys themselves are the main attraction, playful, curious, sometimes cheeky enough to test your patience if you are carrying food or shiny things. Overall it is a pleasant experience, part nature, part cultural site, part wildlife encounter. If you do not mind a few monkeys getting a little too close for comfort, it is worth a visit.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Monkey Forest Ubud is a must-visit attraction in Bali! Entry ticket is only 16k, and the whole place is full of beautiful pathways, nature, and hundreds of monkeys 🐒. They are fun to watch but also very naughty – they can steal your glasses, cap, or snacks if you’re not careful. The highlight for me was the traditional Balinese dance performance, which happens every Saturday from 11 AM – 4 PM at the open stage. The dancers and musicians were outstanding, and it really showed the rich culture of Indonesia. Right behind the stage is a temple (closed for visitors), but it makes the area very photogenic 📸. If you come on Saturday, you get both the monkey experience and cultural entertainment in one visit. A perfect mix of nature, culture, and fun. Definitely a must-see in Ubud! 🌿

Was a little worried about visiting this place because of the monkey attack videos circulating online but this was really quiet as long as you respected the animals and space. Sometimes it's fun to witness monkeys having a wrestle. Saw a tourist teen holding his hand out hoping to touch a monkey on the face despite all the warnings to leave the monkey's alone but there will always be a bunch who think they're above everything else. Lucky for the teen, another tourist told him off. Please respect the rules when overseas

It was nice, it was raining cats and dogs that day, but it was still worth it. The staff were great, and the instructions were clear. The monkeys were actually nice; the few that were there didn't seem aggressive like some people say. They're just in their element, and that's cool. In any case, everything is easily accessible; there are cafes, ATMs, toilets, and everything is functional. So, all good.

One of the best known Bali attractions. To me, seeing a monkey is not something overly extraordinary- yet many visiting tourists seem truly impressed. I was impressed by the story our guide told us about local burial and cremation practice. To save on costs, mass cremation in a given village is organized - and for that to happen - the remains of those buried over the last 5 years are exhumed by their families. Gives the creeps - does it not? Refrain from touching the monkeys or you are in trouble!

Review: Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary Visit 🐒🌿 Visiting the Monkey Sacred Forest was a truly enchanting experience. The temple is home to many lovely monkeys, including adorable babies that added so much charm to the atmosphere. They were playful, and it was fascinating to observe them in such a serene setting. The Sanctuary grounds themselves are stunning, with intricately sculpted walls and stone carvings that tell stories of history and tradition. Walking through the lush greenery and sacred statues created a peaceful and almost magical vibe. A must-visit if you love nature, culture, and a bit of wildlife all in one place. Just be sure to respect the monkeys and avoid bringing loose food!

Wow! What an absolutely amazing day trip. The Monkey Forest is beautiful and I have never had a chance to see this many monkeys together in my entire life. If you follow the rules and don’t try to feed them or touch them, then they should not bother you. But again you need to remember that these are wild or semi wild monkeys, and they are not meant to be fed or meant to be touched they were meant to be looked at. The greenery in the forest is beautiful. The statues are amazing and it’s definitely worth the trip.
