My Son Has Autism, and These Are 7 Trips I Recommend for Neurodiverse Families

"A welcoming activity-based ranch that made horseback riding feasible for a child with autism by allowing the guide to tether the child’s horse to the guide’s own, and whose kitchen staff accommodated sensory and parental needs (for example, by cutting a child’s steak into smaller pieces). Staff flexibility and individualized attention help families participate in typical ranch activities with less stress." - Lisa Kadane

We didnt stay at the ranch, but rented kayaks for a few hours. There are lots of things to do in the area. The ranch was under construction to make things better for future guests. What a fabulous day kayaking on the river with friends. There is sometimes wild horses that come to the river edges to eat the eel grass. What a sight to see! We did get to see horses on this trip. Worth the time and money if enjoy this kind of activity.

My wife and I had an unforgettable experience kayaking the Lower Salt River with Saguaro Lake Guest Ranch. From start to finish, everything was smooth and enjoyable. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, making us feel welcome right away. The safety consultation was not only informative but surprisingly funny—setting a relaxed and positive tone for the day. This was the highlight of our trip to Arizona. Paddling down the river, we were surrounded by stunning desert scenery and even spotted wild horses along the shore—something we’ll never forget. The peaceful flow of the river and the beauty of the surroundings made it a perfect way to connect with nature. We highly recommend this experience to anyone visiting the area. Whether you’re new to kayaking or a seasoned paddler, it’s a must-do adventure.

Very beautiful place to escape the busy life. I had a very chill time that allowed me to refresh and connect with nature. Sometimes, we all just need to hit pause and enjoy this beautiful life and nature around us. Great breakfast and togo lunches! Met some awesome people vacationing, too. Very friendly atmosphere. Don't forget to seek out the ranch dog bandit. ❤️

We had a wonderful time kayaking the Salt River, this was my wife and mine second time with my best friend Fred, and our first time was a few years ago. It was a great experience both times, the guides and the staff were great. Shout out to our shuttle driver Kenneth for making us feel welcome and for the water. I highly recommend and cannot wait to do this again!

Great service, everyone is so welcoming and friendly, the group dinners are so much fun! Food was good, the bed was comfy. Even the very old cabin was comfortable, if a little bit in need of some updates. The pool is awesome to hang out at, just quite dirty.

We kayaked Salt Lake River. Directions were clear. The staff were friendly, professional, and timely. The kayaking was fun and adventurous. We were very well prepared with our training prior to launch. The only negative, which is not due to the kayak service, was the tubers! He didn't lie when he warned us that it would be like a pinball machine! Nevertheless, everyone was nice and friendly. I highly recommend this outing.

I don't generally leave reviews, but I wanted to give a shout out to you all for saving the day. Long story short, we were booked for the 7 am shuttle. At 6:15 we learned that one of the new boards was leaking at the seam. Not a little leak either. A fully audible hissing coming from it. We were stuck, the shuttle and parking pass were already paid for and we live over an hour away. I called Saguaro Lake Guest Ranch, and the Team jumped into action. They offered me a rental, and the Amazing Boots brought it up to me <3 Thanks again!! I was really bummed at the thought of having to go back home this morning. I have never had a bad experience with your shuttle services. Amazing service as always. Keep doing what you do!!

We did the self guided kayak excursion down the Salt River. The team was extremely knowledgeable and very friendly. The float is very relaxing, has some good scenery and if you’re lucky, you’ll get to see some wild horses. The weekends on the river are ridiculously busy with tubes etc. so I’d book during the week or early morning on the weekend if at all possible.
