Saiaz Getaria, Getaria, Basque Country, Spain - Explore & Book

"The Basque people love Getaria - whenever you mention it, they break out in nostalgic smiles as if remembering the happiest days of their life. And when you get here, you see why. It’s a cute little place, with a happy vibe and a lovely beach that’s popular with locals at weekends. Potter about and you find a small harbour for local fishing boats, some good restaurants that serve the freshest fish, and a small marina that’s home to a clutch of posh yachts; day trips over to San Sebastián can be arranged. As for this lovely hotel, it sits on a narrow street at the top of the Old Town, with views to the west of sea and sky. The house dates from the 15th century and was probably a defence of sorts, as several arrow slits survive. Behind its façade of golden stone you find a pretty mix of old and new: mullioned windows, wood and antiques mixed with bright rugs and throws. Prices are great and local staff go the extra mile. There are 18 attractive bedrooms, which all have a warm, homely feel. Some are big, others smaller; several have magnificent sea views (the house stands at the top of a cliff, with waves rolling in below). There’s a big sitting room that looks the right way, plus a terrace where we watched the sun go down with a glass of wine in hand. It's popular with couples, but welcoming to families, too. As for the beach and those excellent restaurants, you won’t have to walk far. Highs Rooms with sea views are magical, worth splashing out onThe Old Town with its pintxo bars, the cool beach, the fishing boats - there’s lots of character here, and it's a very civilised place to do very little. And the Cristóbal Balenciaga museum is heaven for fashionistasElkano, one of the Basque region's best restaurants, is only 50 paces from the front doorMonte de San Antón (the hill that rolls into the sea; known as the Mouse of Getaria) is a great spot to sit and watch the sun go downBeautiful San Sebastián is only 30 minutes away by car Lows The hotel closes from mid-December until 1st March, so it might take a while to receive a response to your enquiryBreakfast is the only meal served, and local menus don't have many meaty options (it's mainly fish) though chuleta and steak can be foundThe hotel has 2 parking spots, and a small seasonal charge applies along the seafront. Beware the steep steps leading back up the hillThe one-way system in town can be confusing; follow directions to the hotel explicitly or you may get lostExpect some noise to rise from the narrow street at the front of the hotel, plus early church bells" - Tom Bell

Exceptional in every respect - from arrival to departure, the small team do everything in their power to help you get the most out of the town and provide an ideal base to explore. Our superior rated room had exceptional views of the surfing beach and on the floor below, a small terrace offered a superlative ‘sunset’ spot for a glass or two. Great breakfast from yet another room with a view - fresh orange juice, perfect coffee and a good range of cheeses and cold cuts. Mikel, the owner, runs this hotel with care and passion. I found a short video, on line, from 11 years ago - it describes how his parents took on the renovation of the property back in the 1980s - 11 years later and his enthusiasm is unabated.

Wonderful small hotel in the charming town of Getaria. Make sure you book a sea view room, well worth it overlooking the beach below & the green hills over the coast road. Mikel & Staff are efficient & super friendly. Pet friendly as well. Highly recommended.

What a very special hotel, the view from the terrace is beautiful. Thank you for the excellent and friendly service from everyone, special thanks to Boubacar who did the booking for me and for the fresh orange juice everyday and Ainara who went the extra mile to find me a last minute physio appointment. Such a cool place!

We loved our stay at Saiaz Getaria Hotel, a gorgeous boutique hotel set in a beautiful old building full of character and charm. There were lovely touches everywhere – antique furniture in the rooms and hallways, with exposed brick walls, giving it a warm and historic feel while still being very comfortable.||We stayed in Room 25, a superior sea view room, and it truly lived up to its name with a lovely view across the bay. The breakfast room shares a similar view over the beach, and the breakfast itself was good quality and reasonably priced at €12 per person.||There’s also a lovely terrace on the first floor overlooking the sea. It catches the late afternoon and early evening sun – perfect for relaxing with a drink at the end of the day, watching the surfers down below.||The hotel is perfectly located right in the centre of town – Getaria is small, so everything is within walking distance. The staff were friendly and helpful, providing excellent restaurant recommendations and even arranging bookings for us.||We were travelling with our little dog, which was no problem at all – there’s a small extra charge, but that’s completely standard in Spanish hotels.||We absolutely loved the town of Getaria itself and would choose to stay here again rather than in the larger nearby cities of San Sebastián or Bilbao (though they have their own appeal). We personally prefer smaller, more charming places – and Getaria is just that. There are so many fantastic grill restaurants to choose from, serving excellent local produce and, of course, the wonderful local Txakoli wine.||I would happily stay at Saiaz Getaria again and am already looking forward to returning next year!

Lovely boutique hotel. Very pleasant staff, lovely breakfast buffet. Only problem I had, was told first of all was getting a sea view room, only to be then told I wasn’t.

We arrived at Saiaz Getaria at the end of a long day of walking along the Camino del Norte -- tired and looking for a good night's rest. We got that and much more. Our room reflected the historic nature of the building but with all comforts added. Staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly -- even going out of their way to take care of our laundry to be dry, folded neatly and delivered to us early the next morning. The lunch they packed for us was the best of our walking trip. The only thing missing was a second night stay which we'll try to do next time!

We made a reservation in this hotel bc it looked charming and they advertise as having parking available, which is a must for our journeys when selecting a hotel. What a surprise, we arrived and were told that there only 4 parking spaces and they were all taken. We were never advised of this lack of sufficient parking prior to our arrival. We were told to go by the beach or any street in town and park there, we looked in the surroundings and there no parking spaces, so we decided to leave and headed to Hondarribia.||What’s upsetting is that they charge us for your room prior to our arrival and that the description of the hotel is so deceptive, basically THERE IS NO PARKING, neither in the city nor in the hotel.||Very disappointing

It was our last stop before San Sebastián. The hotel staff was incredibly friendly—they even upgraded our room, which had an ocean view. A great plus is that it’s dog-friendly and very quiet. In terms of location, it’s well-connected, even though the town itself is small.
