This gate complex is another perfect example of the evolution of defensive architecture during the transformational period between the tall late medieval structures and the bulky, thick constructs of the age of gunpowder.
The initially double, winding gate was under the tall tower of St. Athanasius, which was originally taller and equipped with machicolations and crenelations. The great tower of Panagia offered excellent support with flanking fire upon those unfortunate to have been ordered to attack the gate.
This alignment, quite formidable in itself before the age of gunpowder, was rightfully considered insufficient against cannon fire. Thus a set of cannon-equipped, massive bastions was erected in front of these, with an additional gate complex and a drawbridge as well. Furthermore, the initial tall wall was slightly heightened and drastically thickened in order to support mounted cannons and of course to withstand cannon fire.
A full century of dramatic developments in military architecture is depicted here. The blazons of successive Grand Masters of the order of the Knights Hospitaler can be seen upon different sections; Antonio Fluvian (1421-1437), Jean De Lastic (1437-1454), Giovanni De Batista Orsini (1467-1476), Pierre D ' Aubusson (1476-1503), Fabrizio Del Caretto (1513-1521).
