Small chowder and mussels were fantastic. Ambience is really nice and they have indoor speakers so you can hear the live music. It's quite expensive but I guess that makes sense since its along the harbour

Google
Good Food. On the pricey side , but that's expected for waterfront views. I'd like to add, never in my life have I been charged for a takeaway container until visiting here. Adding pics of the fish and chips, shaved Prime rib, buttermilk fried chicken and feta and Dates.

Had the pleasure of having lunch at the Saint John Ale House on our first trip to Saint John. We were served by the most lovely waitress, Vicky. She was so sweet and made us feel comfortable from the get-go. Really appreciated the beer samples. As many of the other reviews state, it was quite pricey. Had a delicious salad that was already $34 without any protein, and $16 for added salmon. Total of a $50 salad! Really good pub club. Beautiful view and location though, and nice and quiet without a crews ship in sight.

Stopped in for dinner. Was a Tuesday day so $8 flights. Great selection of beers and ciders on tap. Good menu. Some items are on the pricier side. Downtown pricing. But food was great. Good portions. Well prepared. Staff were efficient and friendly. Good come out quickly. Vibe is a pub/warehouse. Was ok.

Google
Just went in for a quick lunch. Food was good but pricey. The costs the potions should be better. The day we went they were unable to get hot water to make coffee or tea. I recommend a better back up plan consider we were there at 2pm in the afternoon. Plenty of time to figure it out. We will try to come again if we are in Market Square. Stay tuned.........

We arrived in Saint John late on a Friday night and popped in for a drink. They are open late. With a long list of drafts, we were happy to see they offer flights! We sampled a few and then settled on a couple of pints. 🍻 The bartender was friendly, welcoming, and helped answer all of our questions. Note: We accidentally entered through the back—thanks, Google! Just a heads-up if you're trying to find the front entrance. 😉

Google
The Kraken Roll and Crosby's Molasses Salmon were both so tasty! Crap ton of fries came with the Kraken roll. A little pricey, but not surprising since it's seafood. The seafood is local supply. Waitress was kind and helpful. Took about 30 minutes before I finally got any food, but I was sitting outside. There was live music going on for most of my time at the restaurant.

Google
We were greeted by Bria who was more than happy to guide us through the myriad of different ales and ciders. Her and her colleagues were really kind in offering us various samples of the ales and ciders for us to try before we commit. There are over 30 of them to try from. We did not have food but the portions looked huge. Really recommend popping in, even if it’s just for a drink.

Yelp
Basically I'd give this place 3.5 stars. We were on our way and reserved a table online 45 min before our arrival. Due to a music festival in the city (506) the place was empty, we got in between lunch and dinner (4:30pm). Our server Russel was super nice but you could tell they weren't really ready in the kitchen for a party of 5. We set down at 4:25 and ordered really fast because we were starving, food came out only at 5:00pm which was annoying. The food was really good, very pub like so if you're into greasy food it's great, we were just really hungry and that usually won't be our go to food but we didn't want fast food. All in all it was nice just annoyed a bit by the slow food delivery

Yelp
Great and aesthetic looking food. View of the Meeting Place while eating.in. I enjoyed watching people at the Meeting Place especially the kids.

Marjorie H.

Yelp
Lovely experience. Good food, friendly waitress, dog friendly. Highly recommended. Mussels were excellent.

Yelp
Stopped for an afternoon snack, the scallops were delightful and the Caesar salad was light and so much flavor. Service was friendly and attentive

Yelp
From the moment the hostess, Jessica greeted us, we were intrigued. Then we found out that she was going to be our server as well. She was excellent in every essence of the word and if you visit this fine establishment, you should most definitely request her. We totally loved the olives and scallops!! My wife had the shaved prime rib and I had the 40 day dry aged ribeye. OMFG! One of the best steaks ever!! The ambiance here is fantastic!!

Maayan G.

Yelp
Awesome service, food was slightly blend and it took really long time to arrive. It was fresh and delicious.

Yelp
Wanted to post a pic of the current menu because I think the one I saw on here was old! Crab and spinach dip was phenomenal, highly recommend!!! Also got the elite, wasn't really anything special. And had the blooming Bellini to drink and I probably could've drank 12 it was delightful! Servers were sweet, helpful and accommodating! Vibes were good sat outside and enjoyed watching the people walk by and seeing the sunset :)

Ella L.

Yelp
Great service, our waiter Grace was excellent! Our food came so fast and was delicious, they didn't have my favourite, the tator tot poutine, so I tried the buttermilk chicken fingers and they were amazing ( I do miss that poutine though). Just such an amazing atmosphere with our waiters Grace and Vicky! Such great ladies, so attentive and sweet, I've never felt so welcomed.

Carmin R.

Yelp
Went to the ale house today showed up a little late but was still greeted so nicely. Candice was so attentive and sweet. Super great experience! Loved having her around to help. Food was great as well! Great atmosphere!

Yelp
Holy huge portions! Saint John Ale House was a pleasant surprise on a Sunday afternoon for lunch. Shane was our server and went out of his way to steer us in the right direction of our food choices. We decided on the fried green tomatoes, fish and chips and chicken tenders. We found out this local joint was featured on the food network for their spices in the chicken tenders! So of course we had to try it. All of our entrees were perfectly seasoned, delicious, and could feed at least two people each. They did not skimp on the portions. Shane made sure we had food recommendations for our next port and again went above and beyond in his service. This is a great local spot that is worth a try!

Yelp
We just had a few appetizers which were all good. (The crispiest chicken wings!) Maybe there was no experienced bartender there that evening? The soda came out warm with no ice. And my "Peal the Love", their take on an Aprol spritz, came in a rocks glass, about 1 inch of liquid, and one large ice cube. I have no idea why I didn't respond with "this is not what I ordered!" I think maybe it was just Aperol?
google avatar

R D P.

Yelp
I guess I picked the wrong night (at least that's what I'm telling myself to feel better). Honestly, the ribeye was good, so I'll give an extra star (I have to remember, I'm not in Chicago or Dallas). But the food is only as good as the service that you're also paying for. I think they were simply trying to keep up with what I believe was unexpected volume on a Sunday night. I wanted to believe it wasn't because I didn't look like everyone else but that's the vibe i was getting. The server was not at all attentive - never got anything that i asked for except the steak. I even signaled for what appeared to be the manager, and he even looked at me and kept going. Not a good experience, wont be back and I'd recommend something different if there was another option
google avatar

Laura S.

Yelp
Their fish and chips were absolutely massive and delicious. Soup of the day was a thicken chicken stew heavy on black pepper and was delicious. We ended up here on a Friday night and it was packed, so expect some wait. Beer flights were reasonably priced and had a ton of options.
google avatar

Jacqueline R.

Yelp
I find the menu small and lacking. My husband had the fish and chips and it had too much batter and was not cooked properly still doughy. I had the steak and had to send it back as it was just a piece of gristle and fat. Not a fan unfortunately.
google avatar

Jeff G.

Yelp
The server was good. The beers were uninspired and the food was overpriced and underserved compared to other places

The R.

Yelp
Wonderful lunch while walking the boardwalk on the harbor. Fish and salad was delicious. Lots of local brews.
google avatar

Tony C.

Yelp
Great venue and service! Very friendly staff that never lets your beer glass stay empty for very long.
google avatar

Cathy B.

Yelp
Cute location - if the weather permits, eat outside as it's more pleasant than the closed up indoors. Most of the cocktails were not up our alley (most involved Schnapps and other sweet things), but our margaritas were good! Get the tater tots poutine. That's my review. That's it. Get those. And the radish toast. But def the tater tots poutine.
google avatar

Frank W.

Yelp
The food is mediocre at best. The prime rib dish we ordered was a mess, bitter popover, overcooked beef, and grainy mashed potatoes. The fish and chips we ordered was literally a fried flour stick, for around $20 you get soggy fries and ONE piece of fish. AND! You know what's even more surprising? Their grilled caesar salad was literally a WHOLE LETTEUCE! For over $10 I'm getting 1 whole letteuce and the least amount of sauce I've ever seen on a salad. Plus I asked for no cheese, but guess what? Cheese on top. Would give zero stars if I could.

Gerry B.

Yelp
Delicious food and great service! The atmosphere is nice too. We liked the Irish Red beer, quinoa salad, spring salad, and the shaved prime rib with a delicious reduction sauce.

Yelp
While visiting St. John, we were walking along the water and saw a mall with a good selection of restaurants and stores along with the local library. While exploring we ran into the Saint John Ale House. There were several areas to sit so we chose a couple of seats at the bar. The bartender offered us a couple of menus and showed us the main list of beers on tap. (There were a lot.) There were a few other patrons but the bartender gave us a good run down about the local beers and we talked about the many great breweries in the Sacramento area. We tried many different styles but my favorites were the Snak Pak Chocolate Banana Stout and the Rogue Coffee Sour. Yes I said Coffee Sour. The combination was actually very tasty. It was time to go but a great place to try beers from many areas in Canada.

Yelp
I'm glad this restaurant operates even with Covid. Service was awesome and food order was great. We order the seafood chowder. I was expecting lobster on it and more shrimp . It has more veggies like carrots and potatoes .
google avatar

Pat M.

Yelp
Best mussels so far! Ask for grilled bread to go with them instead of fries. The broth is worthy of asking for a spoon to finish it off. Great service from Andrew, too! Excellent number of beers on tap.
google avatar

Julie W.

Yelp
Stopped here for lunch on a sunny warm day. Enjoyed eating outside near the waterfront. The staff was friendly and the food good. We had the bacon wrapped scallops as an appetizer and a chicken sandwich. Both were tasty.

Mike C.

Yelp
Located in the marketplace in Saint John. Nice enough place, good selection of beers. Service was fine. We split a poutine tot app with chicken. Chicken was good. Poutine was real salty. Maybe thats the way it usually is but I would not have it again.

Nicki J.

Yelp
The food was excellent. The chicken tenders had an amazing flavor. The grilled chicken sandwich also had really good flavor.
google avatar

Brandon H.

Yelp
This place is wild, chicken strips are the hardest out there. And the lemonade is legit unreal. 5/5 I also got the scallops they're top notch.
google avatar

Meg W.

Yelp
Sort of pricey for the area but delicious. I'd never had smoked mackrel and it was delicious with the side garnish added to it. Followed a Yelp reviewer and took the skin off first and then piled it on crusty bread. Very tasty! Sampled the current flavor of cask beer and it was quite yummy!! Settled on the Blood orange Hefeweizen and it was tasty as well. Friends got the mussels and chips & the open faced steak sandwich. Mussels were yummy with an earthy sayce. Sandwich needed to be deconstructed and served otherwise the bread was a bit soggy pre eating.

Saja Y.

Yelp
The food was excellent the service was pleasant!! I felt the ambiance of the restaurant could use some work!!!

Yelp
I had supper tonight at the Saint John Ale House ... I entered from Market Square. They have a good selection of craft beer I ordered the Prime Rib Sandwich & Mash (without mushrooms). While it wasn't what I was expecting (it's more of a deconstructed sandwich on the Yorkshire pudding), I did enjoy it. The potatoes were really good as was the gravy (there was a lot of it). Taylor was my server. She was friendly and took good care of me.
google avatar

Annabelle Y.

Yelp
Food = 3/5 stars Service = 4/5 stars Ambiance = 4/5 stars I had the smoked mackerel with a side beet & goat salad. I wish the mackerel was served warm (and with a crispy skin!) but otherwise, it tasted great - it had all the fixings to taste like a caesar, with a tomato-y, worcestershire flavoured sauce, and pickled beans and capers on the side. There was a huge hunk of pickled carrot to the side that I didn't quite understand, and the crostinis were nothing to write home about (toasted, buttered, salted bread) but this was a good dish. The beet salad was chock full of beets - the combination of the two was a filling meal. Service was great - Rob was very helpful with recommending both beers and entrees. Thanks Rob for welcoming me to New Brunswick! The mussels & fries looked amazing - I think I'll try either that or the chicken tenders the next time around :)
google avatar

Jessica Y.

Yelp
Didn't come for the food or the poutine or anything food related.. just being honest. Had a double bloody Maria (Bloody Mary with tequila instead of vodka) and it did exactly what I wanted it to do. So I cannot speak to the amazing beers that apppeared to be on tap or the fried goodies that normally accompany drinking at an ale house. I can definitely say the bathroom was clean and without a line!

Yelp
I love the restaurants in the St. John harbor district, and my goal is to hit all of them eventually. This time it was lunch at SJAH on a 1-day layover on a cruise from Boston to St. John and back. The downstairs is the pub area, and the upstairs is casual dining with a nice view. I was very pleased to find an extensive variety of beers on the drink menu from my favorite New Brunswick brewery, Picaroons. Other diners in my party were equally satisfied with their choices, Picaroons and otherwise. Lunch was maple-glazed scallops wrapped in bacon and grilled. This is served without sides, but they offer you a half-salad as an add-on, a nice option which I took. My garden salad was okay - tomatoes were slightly past prime, cut in chunks that were too large, and a bit too much dressing, but otherwise tasty. If you're going to have a salad, my recommendation would be the beet and goat cheese salad instead. The portions on other entrees, like the fried haddock, were huge. We had a great waitress, who knew the menu very well, and helped us with our food and drink selections.

Yelp
Popped in for a bite and a brew . Decided to go with something a little different and grab the "Smoked Mackerel- $11 - Bay of Fundy" . Service was friendly as usual and made a recommendation - side of fries ! Thanks! Very tasty with the crunchy crackers mm . Fish came with skin which you peel it off . The combination of the smoked fish / cocktail sauce/ capers / and picked fiddle heads was beautiful and full of flavour . Got a side of fries too - of course the fish felt very light, not heavy , which was nice . Had a shock top with it too . Overall great experience there again.
google avatar

Yelp
We had a fine evening at SJAH, my club was well put together with quality and care but did not have as much of the spicy mayo as I hoped. My wife's fish and chips was incredible, top notch. Our kids are well. The drink list and beer list was more than adequate. The patio on the harbor was a fine spot, especially amidst the Busker Festival. This restaurant has a good reputation, apparently, and we saw nothing to dispute that.

Yelp
The Saint John Ale House is located right next to the Hilton in Uptown Saint John and can be accessed from with the Market Square or from the boardwalk outside. It has a low-light comfortable atmosphere with unobtrusive rock music playing in the background making for a very welcoming setting. The waiters are courteous and friendly (the waitresses cute as a button) and the kitchen seems sufficiently staffed so that food wait time is not too lengthy. My first instincts went to the buttermilk chicken fingers on my lazy Sunday supported by a subbed-out-from-fries Spinach salad. The salad has a delightfully unique appearance with a pink pickled egg that complements the taste of the well-sauced and flavored poppy dressing. (I've since re-ordered the salad by itself because it's a very satisfying meal with some chicken or other meat on top and recommend it.) The beer selection is HUGE, counting over 75+ of beers to choose from both locally and international. I'm not a drinker myself so for taste I cannot help you unfortunately. The buttermilk fingers contain a blend of 14 different herbs and spices and comes with a thin crusty layer that begs for your attention. Teamed up with a zesty, almost spicy, sauce on the side the gives the tongue a whole-bodied sensation. A very good take on a popular pub food. I ended off with the blueberry tart that I won't give away to you, but disappointment is not one of the ingredients. The Saint John Ale House is a landmark in Saint John and a must visit for anyone in town or when rolling off the cruise ships in the port nearby. It has a simple well-selected menu that will not disappoint. SJAH has taken everything you love about pub food and redone it to fit artisanal beauty and craftsmanship standards prevalent in contemporary food establishments. Come once, and you will not hesitate to come again.

Yelp
Love the motif inside - very cool. Beers were good, Bartender was awesome. Apparently their chicken tenders have been on TV a few times, dunno, but we had them and oh my oh my. I dont know what they do for the batter but its like jerk-seasoning or something. The chicken inside was still moist and the outside so crunchy! I'm so picky about fries and when this came out, the fries look like the kind that might be cut in the kitchen, onsite... but are soggy when cooked if you know what i mean. They were not. Not at all. Perfect crunch. Everything all around was just lovely.
google avatar

Van N.

Yelp
This place is conveniently located in the city square across from the Hilton and Delta. It is good for a quick bite. Food: mediocre, large portions, but over salted. Beer selection is okay, same as any other bar, nothing to bring home about.
google avatar

John L.

Yelp
I still have great memories of this dinner. I ordered the Prime Rib Sandwich & Mash and it was amazing. Everything about the dish was good. The flavours and textures were spot on. Portion size was huge too. My friend got the bacon wrapped scallops and those were good too. What made the meal even better was we were lucky to have patio seats during the Saint John Idol competition that was happening outside the restaurant. Was a great combination of listening great music and awesome food. Would definitely come back again the next time I am in Saint John.
google avatar

Hugh Q.

Yelp
Services great, and food is not bad. Chicken fingers is good, but don't chicken wings taste like pizza pizza.

Terri S.

Yelp
Food is okay but way overpriced. I would describe the service as very 'relaxed'. Location is good if you want a place in the heart of uptown.

Yelp
We came to here for lunch and found wonderful fish and chips that is really huge and delicious. French fly is also nice potato skin fly. Salad was so nice. We enjoyed nice atmosphere too. Below is a review in Japanese for Japanese tourists. 1 Market Square, Saint John, NB E2L 4Z6, Canada +1-506-657-2337 11:00-01:00

Yelp
We really enjoyed our dinner here. The cooked-to-order cheese burger, fish & chips and buttermilk chicken fingers with French fries were all excellent. This friendly place has 30 beers on tap and a very extensive bar menu. Pretty much anything you could want to drink, they serve. The prices are very reasonable considering the high quality of the food.
google avatar

Maggie H.

Yelp
This place is beautiful. There is a bar and seating down stairs. Up stairs there are booths and a washroom. The wash rooms are clean but could use a re-paint. The price for the food is a little expensive. The food is pretty good. It's like every other Ale House. My burger was a little under cooked. The chicken tenders are dry. There are many choices of wine and it's all from Canada. Over I think it is a average restaurant.
google avatar

Marilyn M.

Yelp
We had the burgers. Burgers were very good. You can tell the meat is good quality. The little seasoning on the fries is perfection ( I think its basil or some herbs) . I liked the ambiance, the decor, good service, no mocktails or non alcoholic beverages card, that's the only downer. Everything was good.
google avatar

Chtis R.

Yelp
Staff was great, restaurant was very clean, bartender was awesome, the food I felt was over sold in reviews, the haddock was over cooked, the rice was undercooked crunchy, not al dente Beer selection was awesome Mussels were good Periwinkles were good

Ryan B.

Yelp
Actually left because the waitress didn't even take drink order 15 minutes in. Maybe it wAs a busy day with only one other table of two in the entire place. Check your service;)

Yelp
Another weekend in Saint John, hitting up places recommend by You Gotta Eat Here! For lunch I came to Saint John Ale House. It is connected to the Market, if it is cold out i recommend parking underground at the Market and walk in from the inside. I ordered the Maple Bacon Scallop and PEI Mussels! Both were amazing and fresh! Scallop are in season and they are full of flavour and super fresh. The bacon was delish (cant go wrong with bacon). The portion for Mussels was very big! i was not expecting it. The mussels are in a soup sauce which is a bit of spicy and have a flavourful aroma of garlic, parsley, celery, and onion. The fries are fresh cut and also have some good herbs. I was sad when all the mussels were done. I recommend this place, if i have another weekend here I would definitely come back. I heard the Fried Chicken here is to die for. Maybe next time maybe next time...

Yelp
(We only sat at the bar, no food) The ambiance of this place is awesome, really cool looking, alot of wood fixtures, awesome bar, great tap system, and outdoor seating. It's rustic industrial and cool. The staff wear t-shirts and jeans, which i think is cool. Their beer selection is AWESOME, alot of Canadian beers on tap, really unique stuff. I love the cask thing too. They also have a good selection of whisky, charged by the ounce, which is nice. The bar tender was super nice and helpful with selections, the beer sampling of 4 beers was about $8 which is pretty awesome. Overall great place, must see!!!
