The Chapel of São Miguel (Capela de São Miguel) in Coimbra is a highly unique and historically significant part of the University of Coimbra's Paço das Escolas, serving as a prime example of Portuguese sacred art.
Its most striking feature is the extraordinary, intricately carved 18th-century Baroque organ, considered one of the finest in Portugal, with its elaborate gilded decoration and powerful sound. The chapel's walls are completely covered with magnificent 17th-century azulejo tiles, depicting scenes from the Bible and creating a visually stunning, immersive atmosphere.
Beyond these, its rich Mannerist and Baroque painted ceiling adds another layer of artistic grandeur. Despite its relatively modest size, the Chapel of São Miguel uniquely combines profound artistic richness with a long-standing role as the spiritual and ceremonial heart of one of the world's oldest universities.
