Located just steps from Serdica Metro Station, Saint Nedelya Cathedral impresses at first glance with its striking neo‑Byzantine architecture and central dome that defines Sofia's skyline . As you pass through the entrance—free and welcoming—you're drawn into a serene interior enriched with vivid frescoes, ornate icons, and a beautifully carved gilded iconostasis dating from 1865 .
Despite its tranquil ambiance today, the cathedral carries a profound and somber history. In 1925, it was the site of Bulgaria’s deadliest terrorist attack: a bomb exploded during a funeral service, killing over 200 people and injuring hundreds more . After rising from that tragedy, the church was meticulously rebuilt and restored by 1933 to stand once again as a place of worship and beauty.
