12 Places to Experience Arts and Culture in St. Pete/Clearwater

"Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral is the spiritual center of Tarpon Spring’s Greek community and the annual epiphany celebration, which is said to be the largest such event in the western hemisphere. Its Byzantine/Gothic Revival architectural style and domed main building are based on the Hagia Sophia. It also happens to be the home of a painting that allegedly sheds tears for no logical reason. It was a cleaning woman who first noticed droplets of moisture around the eyes of the Icon of Saint Nicholas on December 5, 1970. The phenomenon is said to have continued sporadically thereafter, and the “crystal droplets” were again witnessed on December 14th by Reverend Elias Kalariotes. Thinking perhaps that condensation was accumulating under the glass enclosure, a carpenter was called in to examine the painting and deemed the enclosure to be airtight.  Kalariotes then contacted the Greek Archdiocese in New York on December 17th. When Archbishop Iakovos arrived for Epiphany Day, he instructed Kalariotes to have qualified individuals examine the painting and record their observations.  The icon continued to shed tears during the next three Christmas seasons, until December 8, 1973. Since then, the painting has drawn thousands of visitors. Interestingly, The Weeping Icon of St. Nicholas is not the only painting in Tarpon Springs said to shed tears. In 1989, there was a similar report of weeping icons at the Greek Orthodox Shrine of St. Michael, just a few blocks away." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

The St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral is breathtaking! I am not Greek, nor religious, but I can appreciate history and beauty when I see it. The exterior of the cathedral is beautiful and well kept, but the interior is amazingly maintained. St. Nicholas cathedral has to be one of the most beautiful and clean places of worship that I have ever been in! This coming from someone whose high school graduation was at the infamous St. Patrick's cathedral in New York City.

This place is incredible. I took this picture around 7:45p and it's just poetic. I'm taking a class to learn the Greek language at the church and they're so awesome, accommodating, thoughtful and open to educating anyone. If learning the Greek language or anything about the Greek Orthodox interests you in the slightest, I am sure that there's a class, program, contact or other reference they can offer to help learn about the religion, customs, etc. It's worth it, I promise.

Yelp
This is a beautiful and historic Greek Orthodox church serving the community of Tarpon Springs. A statue in front commemorates the Epiphany tradition of boys diving for a cross. The marble altarpiece inside is from, I believe, a Greek marble exhibit at a World's Fair. Definitely worth exploring this lovely church while wandering between the sponge docks and downtown Tarpon Springs.

Yelp
This beautiful and historic church is located in the heart of Tarpon Springs. It's open all day to allow for pilgrims to come in and light candles and tourists to come in and see this incredible cathedral. The two priests that are ministering to the community of St. Nicholas are amazing pastors. Be sure to come by in January for the annual diving for the cross and procession. It's an incredible sight to see. I hope to make it there one day, myself!
