Canada Road Trip: A One Month Suggested Itinerary

"Housed in a former jail, the rooms are small (they’re former cells) but staying here is an incredibly unique — and slightly spooky — experience." - Matthew Kepnes

My girlfriend's and I stayed here for 2 nights. The room was very tidy, good sized lockers, the bunk beds were in great shape. Everything was super clean, communal bathrooms were very clean at all times. The continental breakfast was a great addition! We did the ghost tour and learned the gastly history of the cell. Our guide Simon was engaging, answered all questions and made the experience memorable! The location was perfect! Walking distance to the Parliament Buildings, Byward Market and some amazing restaurants, lounges and spas. I would definitely stay here on my next trip to Ottawa!

Really enjoyed our stay at the hostel. Very entertaining ghost tour. We rented 2 rooms for 3 days. One 2 bunk cell and a 4 bunk female dorm. Really comfy and clean. Breakfast was good and amazing coffee. Walkable to most sites. The atmosphere and building was incredible.

I have stayed here more than once, and I absolutely love this place—not only for its great location, tasty breakfast, and perfect cleanliness, but also for the incredible coziness and the feeling of kindness. The whole staff are friendly, welcoming, and always ready to help, and they do it in such a warm way. This time, kind Manu solved a very important issue for me and went out of his way with my accommodation. It truly felt like a birthday gift. If you want not just a hostel, but a place where you can really feel a warm and kind atmosphere—this is the place for you.

The employees make the entire experience a safe clean and informed environment. They are very professional people who do their work with integrity and honesty in every aspect of their work. I am very grateful for my accommodations over the years. I love the location to transportation everything is easily accessible parks, groceries museums and two major universities within walking distance, Keep up your good works and best wishes to everyone who is giving their time and knowledge generously. Your efforts do not go unnoticed, Sincerely, David Sheehan

Love this place! Really unique being an old jail, comfy beds, clean, awesome location, friendly staff, amazing free breakfast and so reasonably priced! I feel like hostels have started charging so much recently it just takes away from the whole purpose so it's really cool to see some genuine hostels still keeping the backpacker life alive :)

Seriously fun experience. Clean, cozy, quiet and friendly. Full access to kitchen and has everything you would need to cook up a meal. Sleeping in the single cell was really comfortable, the mattress was surprisingly great. Showers are single stalls with closed doors. I have already booked my next stay. And breakfast included… can’t go wrong!!

What an unique experience sleeping in a jail cell. At first, I was worried about the "creepiness", but it was totally fine. The cells are clean and have comfortable beds, warm blankets. The bathrooms and showers were fine. Nutritious breakfast is provided. Staff were polite and friendly. The tour of the jail was incredible - a real honest, eye-opener about Canadian history (very different from the Parliament tours). Great location. I would definitely stay here if I need to go to Ottawa again.

I spent a night in one of the 4-bed shared co-ed rooms, was on the 9th (top) floor. There is no elevator to get there, only stairs, which is fine for me, but fyi. Checkin desk is on the 2nd floor. The whole place was incredibly clean, very nice. ||I really liked that there were drapes on each bunk you could pull closed, which kind of made each bunk a little private. There was also a power outlet and light at the head of the bed. The air conditioner in the room worked very well and helped mask any sound, however I'd still recommend earplugs since if your roommates get up in the middle of the night, etc then their comings and goings are still a noise factor despite their best efforts to be respectful.||The free breakfast had some bagels, shelled eggs, cereal, and some other things, it worked for me to get me going.||The free jail tour for guests was at 11am, but I couldn't make it as I was heading to watch House of Commons @ Parliament instead -- however, great history info signage throughout the building, so was able to a little self-guided tour anyways.||CF Rideau Centre (shopping) is directly across the street, which has the OC Transpo O-Train Rideau stop that can take you to/from VIA Rail @ Tremblay, and also a OC Transpo Service Centre on the top floor where you could buy a PRESTO transit card if you want one (if you are going to be riding transit alot; also works in Toronto and Hamilton areas of Ontario).||All in all a great experience, I'd return, and have already recommended it to others!
