Saku feels closer to fine dining than a typical Japanese restaurant. The interior is beautifully designed with stone and wood that feels modern yet homey. Even though I noticed some IKEA pieces, the overall space is one of the better looking Japanese restaurants I have been to in Vancouver.
The restaurant was full, but the booth seating gave us a sense of privacy and made it easy to have our own conversation. One small downside was the lighting in the booth, as several spotlights were pointed directly at us and felt distracting while eating.
Everything was very clean, including the bathrooms. We ordered the Zenbu Katsu to share between my wife, our three year old, and myself, and it was more than enough food. The platter was massive, easily one of the largest I have ever been served. The katsu was moist and well executed, and portions were very generous. I did order a side of house curry, which was fine but nothing special and probably not something I would order again. The frying oil could have been a bit fresher.
Service was excellent, with refills on rice, soup, and cabbage salad, which is a nice touch. Saku is also incredibly family friendly. They have a family restroom, a stool for toddlers to wash their hands, and even coloring pages for kids.
If you are craving katsu, dining with a large group, or eating with kids, this is a great spot that leaves you satisfied. I would definitely return.
