Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine

We were here during gloomy weather (slightly rainy) and it made the atmosphere even more dreamy and beautiful. This was my favorite temple / shrine I have visited in Japan. It is definitely (in my opinion) the most beautiful one in Takayama.

Beautiful spot in November with great autumn colors. Probably the most crowded of the sites we saw in town, but with the exception of one large tour group that took over the stairs for a photo the experience was otherwise not impacted. The higher up you go the quieter and more peaceful it became.

Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine has such a calm and peaceful atmosphere. It’s surrounded by beautiful flowers and offers a lovely scenic spot for photos. Though it’s not a large shrine, it’s the perfect place to relax and feel a sense of tranquility in Takayama. 🌸

Lovely shrine worth stopping at if you are going to the float museum. The Chōzuya is filled with flowers- I've never seen that before, and I think it looks really beautiful, and stands out a lot in winter.

impressive shrine surrounded by nature. Very much recommended for a visit along with the museum of Takayama festival vehicles next to it.

This is an exceptionally-maintained shrine. It has a clean and well-kept outdoor area, a stall with goshuin, and two museums. The whole place has been designed for tourists. Unusually, the museum exhibits not only have English descriptions but also non-Japanese audio guidance. Please visit this place if you are in Takayama.

It's fun to see everything. It's not a full day; after 30 minutes you're done.

This is a BEAUTIFUL shrine up a little hill in the outer part of the city. Loved the calm and relaxing vibe you get there, the architecture was amazing and all the green surroundings of the shrine.

We visited this shrine while exploring Takayama. We had to walk uphill to get to it, but not much; certainly not as much as I was expecting. The shrine was very nice and had an old feel to it. I liked how it was on the edge of town and immediately behind it is a forest. The shrine looked great with the tall trees behind it. There were few people there when we visited. As much as I liked it, you can't go inside or even look inside the main structure, which I found disappointing. Still worth a stop if walking around Takayama though.

Sakurayama Hachiman is the oldest shrine in Takayama. The buildings have an attractive unpainted wood design and is surrounded by large trees. Sakurayama Hachiman sponsors the Takayama Autumn Festival in October, a festival that features large floats covered in lanterns. At festival time, up to 1 million people visit the shrine.

I love the layout of this shrine. The lead up is quite pleasant and this whole area is much quieter than downtown. My guess is everyone just hangs out in the shopping district and doesn't venture further than 10 minutes away from the river. There are several sets of stairs to get to the top. Serene and picturesque, this shrine is surrounded by lots of pine trees. There are several smaller shrines one of which if you leave a writing instrument, you'll get smarter before your exam. There's also a cool, antique looking omikuji machine. Put your coin in and the small mechanical doll enclosed in glass goes into a small shrine and comes out with your fortune which she drops for your retrieval. There are public bathrooms and a lot more shrines further down the street.
