The gushing positive reviews are puzzling.
I stopped in at Sal y Limon the first or second day they opened on the Drive -- I don't remember whether it was a partial/"soft" opening or a full-on open-for-biz deal, but I do remember the food being...meh. Edible, not terrible, not great, just passable.
The first few days aren't always a fair test of a restaurant. So now they've been open awhile, I thought I'd give them another try.
Service was fine; they took my order efficiently and brought it out in a reasonable amount of time. And the place was clean. The music was being played too loudly to have a conversation without shouting, but they turned it down right away when I asked politely.
The food: still meh. Edible, not terrible, not great, just passable. My husband and I both had burritos; he had the Grand Sal y Limon (chicken and pork), and I had the Barbacoa de Cordero (lamb). They were OK, not better or worse than that.
I also ordered a piña colada, which they offer as a non-alcoholic drink described as "pineapple and coconut" (which, yes, that's what should be in there). It was UNBELIEVABLY sugary. Well beyond the range of some-like-it-sweeter; this tasted as though someone dumped in at least one whole bag of sugar. A small amount of coconut flavour was almost detectable behind that massive sugar overdose; no pineapple flavour was apparent. This was not drinkable beyond two sips.
There is _much_ better Mexican food within easy walking distance. Compared to Sal y Limon, Red Burrito a couple blocks north is head-and-shoulders above. Further north down the hill, Don Oso's is vastly better. And the other direction from Sal y Limon, south to between 4th and 5th, Chancho is outta-this-world good (though it costs more).
