Sala Chalermkrung Royal Theatre is one of the few places in Bangkok where you can experience traditional Thai dance and music in a formal setting. Performances take place three times a day, every day, and admission is free with a ticket to the Grand Palace, which makes it an excellent addition to the visit. There is a shuttle service from the Palace, although you can also arrive on your own. If you get there early, the surrounding plaza is a great spot to eat, with many stalls offering typical Thai food, as well as familiar options like Starbucks and KFC. The theater itself is beautiful and well maintained. The show is short, engaging, and ideal for kids—long enough to enjoy without feeling too much, and it often leaves you wishing it were a bit longer.
