I visit Vientiane at least once a year, and I always try to stay at the Salana. That’s not always easy, because it’s popular! And they deserve to be. Their staff is extraordinarily sweet and accommodating. The rooms are cool and comfortable, with hardwood floors, crisp bedding, good AC, and modern bathrooms with good water pressure where everything works (not to be taken for granted). The beds are firm in the Lao style, though not as hard as in some places. The Salana is in a fabulous central neighborhood, surrounded by shops, restaurants, temples, the night market. Breakfast is always included and is a daily treat, with a mix of western and Lao offerings on the buffet, plus a generous selection of dishes available for order. Choco-Puffs and tiny baskets of sticky rice in the same meal! Seriously, there are fried eggs if that’s what you want, but also opportunities to sample beautifully prepared Lao food. There’s a cocktail bar on the fourth floor, which has been recently refurbished and refocused; it is not part of my beat, but I know it has good views over the neighborhood, and I overhear people speak well of it. On past visits, traveling companions have used the massage services on the second floor, and liked those as well. Generally, this is a delightful, spotless, welcoming refuge. I look forward to every opportunity to visit.
