16 Excellent Old-School Italian Spots In London

"Sale E Pepe has been serving anyone walking down Pavilion Road after leaving Harrods with one too many shopping bags since 1974. It’s a white tablecloth spot that has the potential to be a stuffy snoozefest, until it fills up with boisterous friends who settle in for a three-hour catch-up, and grandparents with their grandkids so they can finally get them to eat anything other than a chicken nugget (even if that is pollo alla milanese). The mixed bag of diners—couples holding hands under the table outside and families ordering calamari to share—make it a lively, vibrant spot. Expect Knightsbridge prices but we’d happily put down £50 for things like the buttery whole Dover sole and tasty spinach and ricotta-filled ravioli." - jake missing, heidi lauth beasley, rianne shlebak

Sale E Pepe - Review - Knightsbridge - London - The Infatuation

"Sale E Pepe has been serving anyone walking down Pavilion Road after leaving Harrods with one too many shopping bags since 1974. It’s an old-school, white tablecloth Italian spot, with a dining room that feels serious until it fills up (which it does quickly at peak times). This is a place where friends come for a three-hour catch-up, and grandparents bring their grandkids to get them to eat anything other than a chicken nugget (even if that is pollo alla Milanese). While it has all the potential to be a stuffy snoozefest, the mixed bag of diners—couples holding hands under the table outside and families ordering calamari to share—make it a lively, vibrant spot. Don’t think that the rustic terrace out front means it’s anything but Knightsbridge prices though. But for things like the buttery whole Dover sole and tasty spinach and ricotta-filled ravioli, we’d happily put down £50—and venture into SW1 on a weekend. photo credit: Sale e Pepe photo credit: Sale e Pepe photo credit: Sale e Pepe photo credit: Sale e Pepe" - Rianne Shlebak

I recently dined at Sale E Pepe and I must say, it was an incredible experience. The food was authentic and bursting with beautiful flavors. Each dish tasted like it was made with love and care, just like a true Italian meal should be. The service from Elisa was outstanding. She was attentive, knowledgeable, and made sure our dining experience was top-notch. Her warm and friendly demeanor added to the overall ambiance of the restaurant. I will definitely be adding Sale & Pepe to my list of favorite restaurants to return to. If you're looking for a taste of Italy right here in town, look no further than Sale E Pepe. Grazie mille for a wonderful dining experience!

Decent food and vibe, tiramisu was fantastic. The server was amazing with birthday surprise for my son. A bit pricey for the food served.

We recently dined at Sale e Pepe in London to celebrate my wife’s birthday, and it was an unforgettable experience that deserves nothing less than a glowing review. From the moment we walked into this charming Knightsbridge gem, the warm ambiance and attentive staff set the tone for a truly special evening. Our server, Shampa, was an absolute standout. Her warmth, professionalism, and genuine enthusiasm made the night feel extra special. She went above and beyond to ensure my wife’s birthday was celebrated in style, surprising us with thoughtful touches that added a personal flair to the evening. Shampa’s recommendations were spot-on, and her attentiveness never felt intrusive—just the perfect balance of care and charm. The food was exceptional, with a menu that beautifully showcases classic Italian cuisine with a refined touch. A particular highlight was their gluten-free pasta and options, which were a godsend for my wife, who has dietary restrictions. The gluten-free dishes were just as delicious and well-executed as the rest of the menu, proving that Sale e Pepe caters to all diners without compromising on quality or flavor. Every bite, from the perfectly al dente pasta to the rich, flavorful sauces, was a testament to the kitchen’s skill and dedication. The atmosphere was lively yet intimate, making it the ideal setting for a special occasion. The attention to detail, from the elegant decor to the impeccable service, elevated the entire experience. Sale e Pepe is a must-visit for anyone seeking authentic Italian cuisine with heart and soul. Thank you, Shampa, and the entire team, for making my wife’s birthday so memorable—we can’t wait to return!

Google
Super nice Italian restaurant in Knightsbridge close to Harrods. Food was excellent. Service by Elisa was special. Very attentive and anticipated all our needs. We would definitely go back!!!

Google
The best Italian restaurant in London! Elisa is a super host, makes you feel at home and suggests only the best. The gamberoni and pasta with clams were great! I was teleported to an Italian beach with just a taste. They were super friendly with our baby and made a small surprise for my partner too. We will go back soon! Well done guys!

Google
From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was absolutely amazing — warm and welcoming. But what truly made our visit special was Elisa. Her energy lit up the room! She was attentive, friendly, and genuinely passionate about making sure everyone was having a great time. You could tell she loves what she does, and it made all the difference. The food was absolutely delicious. But it was Elisa’s vibrant personality and the lively atmosphere that really brought everything together. Highly recommend this place — and if you’re lucky enough to have Elisa taking care of you, you’re in for a memorable night!

Google
I had a wonderful anniversary dinner here with my partner. Sensational food and incredibly attentive and kind staff. Felt looked after at every stage. Really, really good - don’t sleep on it, just go! ( PS - don’t miss the tiramisu)

Google
Great vibes and service. The lobster pasta for 2 was very filling and a good choice. Zucchini fritters recommended by the staff were also the highlight, and I’m not a fan of zucchinis in general. Squid ink risotto was a miss for me though, it felt a little too watery/soft than what I’m used to. The new decor is beautiful but may get a little cramped for some.

Yelp
Have been a huge fan of sale e pepe since the first time I ate there 20+ years ago. While there are many new and more creative Italian restaurants in London, sale e pepe stands out for its consistent quality and welcoming ambiance.

Yelp
Best Italian restaurant in Knightsbridge! My family and I always come here when we visit and enjoy such a long, delicious dinner. I highly recommend the beef carpaccio appetizer and most of the pasta dishes are above average. Service is always excellent and ambiance is small, upscale and cozy.

Yelp
I had been coming to this restaurant for the better part of 20 years my last time in 2017 and then a hiatus due to COVID-19. The food was good though not as good as I remember it, could be nostalgia "the good old days". Though some of the menu changes throughout the years were better this last iteration not so much. I imagine you have to fit with the bougie restaurants around, what a pity. The food was good just seems to have lost a bit of what I think made it a very good restaurant with honest Italian food with a flair. Nothing lasts forever. The service was outstanding very attentive staff the floor manager was on top of the restaurant and very engaged with all of her guests. Just wow on service. This was way way better than my last visit. The value was subpar in fact quite expensive. I've had meals as good or better for far less, during this visit to London. This was perhaps the worst part of the experience. It's like rooting for your team when they did themselves in. My thoughts is go back to your roots forget about the bougie surroundings. Come back to earth and serve good honest Italian food.

Yelp
We're staying a couple of days at the Millennium Hotel on Sloane and they recommended this place just out their back door and 100 yds to the right. This place is so fabulous! It's a bit upscale but very authentic Italian. The staff is super friendly and engaging but very professional. But the food: it was so flipping good the 1st night that our group agreed "why try to find someplace else when we have such great food right in our backyard?!" and we went back a 2nd time last night. Repeat performance: outrageously good food. My wife has dietary restrictions so we have to find places where the staff is able and willing to listen to her and communicate to the kitchen who are then willing to accommodate. Both nights she had a simple filet of salmon with plain roasted potatoes and raved about it. I had the linguini with baby clams which was on- point and hit the spot. I tasted our friend's mushroom risotto which was so good I ordered it the following night: those fresh truffle slices put it over the top! I also tasted a friend's tagliatelle bolognese with veal and it, too, was outstanding. If you happen to be in the area look this place up: I don't think you will be disappointed.

Yelp
When In London and want authentic Itialian without going to Italy go here , Great food and wine choices . Friendly staff and great service . Decent decor and vibe too .

Nina S.

Yelp
Bolognese, excellent Beef carpaccio, awful, chewy & expensive. Linguine & clams, good. Tagliatelle with black truffles, good, yet missing something. Fogasse, excellent. Nice location & atmosphere.

Yelp
The food is extremely delicious, i don't think any other place can offer the quality of food offered in this beautiful restaurant. The service is fantastic despite being a very busy restaurant you feel very special and they keep looking after you. It's always a must stop whenever i'm in London.

Yelp
Conveniently close to Harrod's! I was in the mood for pasta and Sale E Pepe did not disappoint! We walked in around 7pm and were able to be seated right away. We ordered the calamari, scallops, spaghetti bolognese and carbonara. Everything was delicious!!
google avatar

Ron R.

Yelp
Nice little restaurant with an elegant casual vibe. The service is great at times and can get a bit slow when they are busy. Excellent wine list. Full bar. The food is the star. We ordered £18 Calamari Fritti 5/5, Vitello Tonnato 5/5, Spaghetti alla Carbonara 5/5, Bucatini Cacio e Pepe 5/5, and Tagliatelle alla Bolognese 5/5. Dessert Brownie al Cioccolato 5/5 (OMG), Tiramisu della Casa 4/5, and a special crème brûlée 3/5.

Yelp
The food was amazing and the service was top notch. the waiters were personable and funny. the bolognese was some of the best i've ever had and the carbonara was very creamy. chocolate brownie with ice cream for dessert hit the spot. calamari was average but the tartare sauce was excellent. great drink selection as well, i loved the pornstar martini (although it could have been a little stronger). overall fantastic service, the pace of the meal was perfect, delicious food that didn't make me leave feeling heavy, and it made for a great evening out with my family! would definitely recommend

Yelp
2nd time there in 4 days. My newlywed husband raved about this place, not doubting his taste in restaurants I agreed to go. Not only once but twice I was disappointed in their service. The staff and management seem to suck up to the patrons that seemly threw money their direction. While being in the service industry in the past, I understand this level of attention I was sorely disappointed by the lack of theirs. I had to ask for my $30 a glass wine not once but twice after sitting for more than 15 minutes without a drop. Now... I never told the servers I was celebrating my marriage/honeymoon but I shouldn't have to... neither that my husband was a celebrity in the US! What a tired place. Won't make the same mistake again, nor should you!
google avatar

Kristi L.

Yelp
Eliza and the entire staff at Sale e Pepe is absolutely wonderful! The carbonara is the best I've ever eaten, the focaccia is perfect and profiteroles were divine. I'll forever return when I'm in London. Soooooo amazing in every way. I can't say enough!

Love I.

Yelp
I've been coming here for decades. I would travel from overseas just to eat the tender house-made fettuccine that literally melted in your mouth. On my last visit I learned they are under new management and my favorite dish is no longer on the menu. Apparently it is too much trouble to make the delicate pasta from scratch. The rest of the meal was stellar as usual. The ambiance is wonderful. But I'm not sure I will actively seek out my once-favorite restaurant any more. Small things do matter at a restaurant of this caliber.

Elle K.

Yelp
Loved that this gem is so close to Harrod's! Great atmosphere, very attentive service and lovely food. Delicious. I can't wait to come back!

Yelp
I can't visit London without having a lunch at this wonderful restaurant. The food is very good and the staff are very nice. I strongly recommend it to anyone who loves Italian food.

John T.

Yelp
Charming Italian restaurant in Knightsbridge. Extensive food and wine menu. Welcoming hosts and staff. Went twice for lunch on recent visit to London and had beautiful Italian lunches with excellent cuisine

Lauren R.

Yelp
So good!! The manager and our waiter were super kind and the meal was amazing. Very light yet tasteful pasta, delicious appetizers.
google avatar

Falk L.

Yelp
A very good Italian restaurant close to Harrods in a small side street. The reception is very warm and although Saturday evening was, we got a table immediately. The choice of meals is wide. The same applies to wine and beverages. Those who succeed in making a decision will receive excellent Italian cuisine. Everything from starter to espresso is perfect. Worth mentioning are the attentive waiters. We'll be back for sure.
google avatar

Esii W.

Yelp
Had a refreshing meal here with lovely wine. Highly recommended!! Great place to have a well made meal and will definitely put a smile on your face. Make sure you save room for dessert and have it with one of the recommended dessert wines. Definitely have to visit again!

Leonardo B.

Yelp
This a nice restaurant in a nice place the food was amazing the service was slow but it was a Saturday night they were definitely understaffed.
google avatar

Adrian B.

Yelp
Went for Valentine's Day lunch. They kindly organised a table large enough so that a friend could join for coffee. Another great meal and great service as ever. Still a favourite place
google avatar

Luis L.

Yelp
Had a wonderful dinner here. The octopus carpaccio was surprisingly delightful, so was the tiramisu. The main course was a pasta with prawns, nothing special but at least it's al dente. Price is a bit steep, but not out of the ordinary in this part of London.

Helena J.

Yelp
New owner, the food is dreadful. Minestrone soup is water with boiled vegetables. The veal was tough and lemon sauce was sour. The focaccia bread was old. Well after 40 years of coming here and enjoying the wonderful food and always a full restaurant of people this place was mostly empty. Sad to say we will not be back. I guess time to move on!

Bill O.

Yelp
Stumbled upon Sale E Pepe while on vacation in London. So happy we stopped by, they got us in quickly and the food and service was fantastic.
google avatar

Kailey D.

Yelp
Phenomenal meal. Went with a large group and they were wonderful in accommodating us. I had the special with shaved truffle and my husband had the lasagna. Both were fabulous.

Ed V.

Yelp
I have been to Sale e Pepe several times over the years when visiting London. My last visit was disappointing. The service was clumsy at best and the good was below average. How can you screw up pasta? They did not know how to make a martini and got flustered when we tried to explain to them that it should not have lemon juice in it. I am not sure if was an off night however the management seems to be missing and the food needs a major improvement.
google avatar

Vivian H.

Yelp
We were in the area searching for good Italian food, and this place definitely hit the spot. This place is tucked in a street near Harrods. It's not easy to find but worth the search. When we got in, we got seated right away, as it wasn't a busy hour. The service were polite and smiling. The atmosphere was comfy and warm. The food was delicious, and each of us loved our plate of food. Overall, it was a great experience.
google avatar

Bob W.

Yelp
Average at best. The staff was very friendly but that's where the positive stops. First and foremost the restaurant is LOUD. It was so difficult to have a conversation. The food was not great. I ordered asparagus as a starter and they were the size of tree trunks and flavorless. I sent them back. It was replaced with a bowl of minestrone soup which was very bland. My main course was lasagna which was not the best. They offer you bread and then add 4 pounds to the bill for bread service. For price and quality of experience I believe you can do better elsewhere.
google avatar

Elsi P.

Yelp
I am such a foodie and this place has some of the best Italian food I've had. The service is amazing, it's what I imagine Italy to be.
google avatar

Amanda B.

Yelp
Amazing food and excellent service. The pasta e fagioli was delicious, the Quattro formagii rigatoni was stellar. After a long day of getting lost and searching for a great meal, this hit the spot and exceeded our expectations.
google avatar

Kristie C.

Yelp
Hm good food, pretty good service, small cozy little place. Loved the atmosphere too -- really good grilled fish, mozzarella and tomato salad was really yummy. Tucked away from traffic too, yay
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing food. Great location. This restaurant gives you great food with a very friendly Italian atmosphere.
google avatar

Joshua C.

Yelp
AmaZing service. Small but quaint. Menu is so good. People were so nice and accommodating. Went pretty late so we didn't need to make a reservation, but all tables were taken except for one.
google avatar

Yelp
Really great home-style, legit Italian. We brought the kids here for an early dinner on our way back from shopping. They don't have high chairs but the staff was very accommodating and allowed us to keep the baby's stroller parked at the table. It was a bit tight but everyone worked around it. We ate mista and tricolore salads then scampi with mushrooms and a pasta bolognese dish. They served some simple past dishes for the kids. We were all very pleased with our meals and the overall experience. The tiramisu was also molto bene. This is our new go-to when in the area with the kiddos.

Barb S.

Yelp
One of our absolute favorite places to eat in the world. We have eaten here twice, nine years apart, recognizing the manager immediately. A fun atmosphere with incredible food & amazing service. The waiters are happy to recommend dishes & they don't disappoint. If you love Italy, you'll love this place!
google avatar

Jennifer F.

Yelp
A friend recommended this place and I went to check it out with my husband last week. Really enjoyed this place. We got there for an early dinner, so service was amazing 'cause it was not very busy. I noticed service slowed down as more people showed up. Atmosphere is cozy, meaning tables tightly packed together but the staff navigated the tight spaces with great efficiency. Overall, the wait staff was friendly and attentive. The main reason this place was great was of course the food. Since it was my first time, I had some of my basic favorites so I could compare with other places. To start, I had the tri-color salad (avocado, tomato, mozzarella) and for entree I had the fresh pappardelle pasta special with porcini mushrooms. Very simple ingredients, but all high quality and cooked perfectly. Had another classic for desert - tiramisu since it was available as a special for the evening and it too was fresh and was gone in about 2 seconds :) Sent my friend a note thanking him for the recommendation. Will be back and will also recommend to others!
google avatar

Kris W.

Yelp
Great hosts, great food, lively atmosphere...fun place for an evening out with friends. Gracious, genial service from start to finish; delicious, comprehensive menu with tasty desserts and delicious pastas. What more could you want? Eat here.
google avatar

Hailey H.

Yelp
This place is amazing from start to finish! I found this spot through a friend and now bring everyone I can to experience this restaurant. A warm welcome from the owner and staff as you walk in the door. This place is lively with great food and amazing wine. I love the side potatoes and the scallops! Finish with a fantastic house made dessert and a warm good bye! Located right behind Harrods, so it's perfect for lunch as well!
google avatar

William M.

Yelp
Sale E Pepe provided a lovely evening, good buzzy atmosphere, good wait staff and nice fresh fish. Calamari Fritti was excellent, as was the Dover sole which was gorgeous. Nice wine list, good fun The company makes the evening special ;)

Lupe L.

Yelp
I eat here every time I go to London, at least once. To me, it's an icon. Very small, crowded tables, in a side street next to Harrods. Wonderful cozy ambiance. The fettuccine is the best I've ever had - homemade pasta, smooth and mild - melts in your mouth and so authentic. You do need a reservation.
google avatar

Amy W.

Yelp
This is my "go to" restaurant every time I visit London. Seriously good Italian food and it was my hands down reward choice after running the London Marathon this year. Very Italian and very welcoming at each visit. It's ambiance is lovely. Beware that as the night goes on, the restaurant will be packed with diners making it a bit loud. I prefer an early dining reservation. Our whole family, grandparents to teenagers, were incredibly happy with their food selections. The carbonara is out of this world. Needless to say, I'll be looking forward to dining here again.
google avatar

Andrew J.

Yelp
Great traditional Italian food. However the manager and service was arrogant and rude. Rushed us in and out the door. Would not split the check. Overall a very typical Italian experience. 5 stars for food. 1 star for service.
google avatar

Claudio C.

Yelp
Great restaurant Happy and fun service Fairly quick A little small and due that it is good, a little crowed feeling when sited Great lobster pasta, and ravioli
google avatar

Rodrigo R.

Yelp
Great dinning, an Italian restaurant with great Italian mood, great service. Definitely a comeback on my next trip to London.

Sean D.

Yelp
Let me just state, I am not on the payroll. This place was great. I dine in top establishments on business in major cities around the world and Sale e Pepe holds its own with any of them. Food, ambiance and service top notch. I can't give it anything less than five stars.
google avatar

Sonica M.

Yelp
Worse dining experience I have had so far. I heard a lot of good things about this place and went there for friends birthday dinner. Let's just say the evening was ruined by they're rude staff and horrible service. The place was loud and tight. I had pasta that was overloaded with double cream and oil. Felt very rushed through out the night and felt that they wanted us leave asap. You would expect an great service considering the location but unfortunately it was one of the worse.

jeremy l.

Yelp
We had a really great meal here and the place is so typically italian that you cannot help but have a good time. It's loud and warm and fun! We went on a Saturday night and I would say easily half the restaurant was italian folks enjoy time together and it made for a lovely atmosphere. Atmosphere aside, the food was delicious - appetisers that our party of five enjoyed enjoyed included asparagus with Parmesan, mozzarella with garlic and anchovy sauce fried in bread, prosciutto with melon, fried calamari and tuna tar tar (?). We followed it up with Veal Milanese and Penne Arrabiata, which were both wonderful. Only downside was the mixed drinks were a bit uninspired - bit I get the feeling we should have ordered wine as it IS an Italian place. Dessert was also wonderful. Recommend the chocolate brownie with ice cream. And for 5 people, bill came to £300 pounds - so not crazy expensive for Knightsbridge. Definitely recommend!

Mark M.

Yelp
Excellent dining experience. Food was prepared perfectly. Veal bolognese and lamb dishes very good. Friendly staff and nice ambience . Smaller dining area and it could get a bit loud but overall would highly recommend

Qype User (Hungry…)

Yelp
Want to see pictures of this horrid food? http://hungryinlondon.com/2011/12/sale-e-pepe-knightsbridge-my-worst-meal-of-the-year-2011/ Dear Sale e Pepe, Congratulations! You won the prestigious HungryinLondon Award for the worst and most overpriced meal of the year 2011. It was a close one between you and Osteria Basilico in Notthing Hill,(the Italians going strong!) but you managed to pull it off, well done! I understand you have been around for 4 decades and you might have been grand in the past. You are always full whenever I walk past you which might be due to your former glory or the fact that the Knightsbridge crowd thinks whatever is expensive must be good. As the only thing extraordinary about you are your prices. I shall not set a foot into your door again unless you have fired the cook and all the awful, immensely irritating waiters. Waiters should not sing, they should not say 'watch your bum'when walking past me and they should not leer at my cleavage. This is not charming cheeky Italian gigolo behaviour, this is plain creepy. And they should not overfill my wine glass! It's true, when faced with this kind of food all you want to do is drown your sorrows, but I want to do this in my own time, thank you very much! Your chefI hope he is not Italian,he would be a disgrace for his race and I don't think the proud Italian nation would ever let him back into their country. If the food had just been plain, one could have maybe saved it with salt, pepper and olive oil. Your chef however miraculously managed to destroy each single one of the dishes we ordered. Quite remarkable really. The bread dry and substandard. The amuse bouche a joke of fishy salmon paste on the aforementioned yesterday's baguette. Dear Sale e Pepe, you also score highly in the HungryinLondon sub-category Worst Presentation of the Year 2011. Your Tagliolini al Tartufo Nero (19.50) is possibly the most repulsive looking plate of food I have ever seen. Overcooked pasta sticking together into one big starchy lump immersed in an atrocity of brownish sauce was also the worst tasting plate of food I have had in a long time. Somehow it managed to not taste of truffles at all, again quite remarkable. Well then there was the insipid Insalata di Mare. You charge 12.50 for some measly mussels, sad sardines, stringy squid and pale prawns. What a rip off! The Pollastrino Aromatico (15.50) was a misnomer if I have ever seen one! What was lacking in presentation was also lacking in flavour and there was nothing 'aromatic'about this bone-dry bird. That you charge 22.50 for the overcooked Coda di Rospo swimming in a pool of watery sauce is a very risky thing indeed. How long will people be happy to pay so much money for so little quality without lynching your chef or manager? Don't say I haven't warned you. Here my final rating, you will be happy: Food: 1/10 Service: minus 10/10 Ambiance:6/10 Value for Money: 1/10 Chances of Returning: Hahahaha Verdict: I am actually lost for words. Yours sincerely, Ute
