While reflecting on a week’s worth of meals in Reykjavik, one of my favorites was from Salka Valka!
The four of us went around 1:00P on a Saturday and were seated right away at an indoor table by the back door. While it was nice to catch some of the breeze, our table was also right next to the restroom, and most of the time, at least one or two people were waiting in line and therefore standing right next to us. They have several covered tables out front along the street, but those were all occupied by the time we arrived.
The menu is on the smaller side, focused on Icelandic small plates, main courses and pizzas. The main courses are traditional Icelandic fare such as lamb shank, arctic char and the famous Plokkfiskur.
I ordered the PLOKKFISKUR (fish stew, 4300 ISK) and loved it! Haddock and cod were mashed with potatoes and topped with a creamy Bearnaise sauce. To me, it tasted like clam chowder, which was such a pleasant surprise! It had a smooth texture with some lumps and I only found one fish bone. The plate also included a scoop of Basmati rice, sweet potatoes, small side salad, rye bread with butter and a dollop of paprika ginger sauce. The sauce added a bold bright flavor and the sweet potatoes were natural and delicious. I enjoyed the sweet rye bread which went perfectly with the salty butter. For 4300 ISK, this was a hearty and well-rounded meal.
My dad ordered the FISH 101 REYKJAVIK PIZZA (3800 ISK) which had tomato sauce, mozzarella, fish of the day, olives, onions, mushrooms and garlic oil. I personally found this to be too fishy tasting for my liking, but he polished it off. My mom enjoyed the FISH & CHIPS (4100 ISK), so you can’t go wrong with that.
The staff was friendly and checked back with us a couple times to make sure everything was okay. I highly recommend this restaurant for a true Icelandic meal that is filling and pretty reasonably priced.
