8 Amazing Canoe Trips in the United States | Travel + Leisure

"Also known as The River of No Return, the Salmon River takes boaters through 46 miles of recreational river trail, before reaching the 79-mile section of designated 'wild' river. Canoers looking to take on the full 46-mile recreational route can put in at North Fork and take out at Corn Creek — a journey with tall canyon walls and some of the oldest known rocks in the state — or apply for a permit to venture into the 'wild' section of the Salmon River." - Evie Carrick Evie Carrick Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. The Salmon River, often called the "River of No Return," was an unforgettable adventure! Its rushing waters were surrounded by rugged canyons, lush forests, and pristine wilderness that took our breath away. We went rafting, which was both thrilling and serene as we navigated rapids and floated through calm stretches. Wildlife was abundant—we saw bald eagles, deer, and even a family of otters playing near the shore. The campsites along the river were perfect for relaxing and enjoying the stars at night. Fun fact: the Salmon River is one of the longest free-flowing rivers in the U.S., making it a unique and unspoiled destination. The only downside? Some sections are remote and require planning to access, but it’s well worth the effort for the incredible experience!

Peaceful pleasant place to visit. We hiked up and down the river in Salmon, ID. We spent 1-2 hours walking over bridges and up and down the river banks. Great place to spend the day and possibly go for a picnic. The only negative is that we did not have more time to walk around. We were there right at dusk which you will see in the pictures. In Salmon there was plenty of paths and trails to walk on and good access directly to the water.

Beautiful sandy beaches, fun river for fishing and water adventures. The whitewater rafting is the best in the state.

Stayed overnight at a dispersed camping site off the highway around Ellis. Backed up to the river and relaxed after driving the Custer Motorway. The mosquitoes here in Idaho are relentless. Lol Had to double spray the deet. But, how can you ever complain about free camping? Never!
