Best Places to Eat Jamaican-inspired Cuisine on Costa Rica's Caribbean Coast

"A longtime local institution celebrated for its ‘ground provision’ dishes—cassava fritters, fried sweet plantains, and other root-vegetable-based plates—plus reggae nights and Caribbean cocktails; operated by Wanda Patterson and family, the kitchen emphasizes survival, identity, and recipes passed down through generations, with house specialties like a journeycake sandwich served with vegetables, refried beans, curry sauce, and pico de gallo." - Kayla Stewart Kayla Stewart Kayla Stewart is an award-winning food and travel journalist. Lara in the bar was AMAZING! She was tending the bar and waiting tables and made it seem so simple and took such great care of us. I had the chicken sour cream enchiladas and they were delicious! The salsa is really yummy. Definitely will go back! Thank you Lara! Such wonderful service!!!

Stopped in on a Thursday for lunch so it wasn't too busy. Honestly we were not expecting much, but it turned out better than we expected. I got the Chimi styled veggie burrito and my boyfriend got a couple enchiladas both meals included rice and beans. It all tasted better than expected. The chips and salsa we got freely were decent but needed some kind of kick. I feel it was a tiny bit over priced. My burrito was huge, but for the same price my boyfriend got two very tiny enchiladas. I really appreciated the amount of vegetarian options here though and we would probably come back. Due to sharing the space with urban egg plus the music to compensate that it was a little loud. All in all it was a good experience as our server was nice as well.

In case you did not know this is one of the most consistently phenomenal Mexican restaurants in the city. Although I frequent and seek out every hole in the wall and taco truck I can find (in COS and in the global ghetto beyond), Salsa Brava continues to amaze me with the layers of contextual flavors that are authentic to everything Mexico. I grew up in Baja Mexico (Anaheim, CA) so I think I have earned the right to have a professional perspective on at least Baja-style Mexican cuisine. On top of that the presentation is always absolutely beautiful. And then on double-top of that there is have an amazing crew (Josh, Sean, Bradley, Steven chef bro, RICO!, Brandi, Lindsay, Laura+++) that always makes the experience so special. So stoked to live close by to be here ALL THE TIME.

First time going here was a Monday night around 7pm. The manager was hosting I believe and she was sweet. Our server was pleasant the two times we saw her. She charged us $2.50 for ground beef when the menu says $1.50 Had to ask the manager for more chips. Server only got my husband a soda refill when we asked for the check. However, the food was definitely worth the not great service. The free salsa was so good! The queso was so good and never ending even though it appears to be a small serving. My husband had a burrito which he loved and I had the taco salad. The server took the time to ask what dressing I wanted but I didn’t ever receive any dressing. Would recommend due to the food being excellent but would not recommend based on service.

Absolutely beautiful view and lovely patio looking directly at Pikes Peak. The food was timely and tasted almost as good as the view.

We love coming to Salsa for our Mexican lagers, fiesta chicken salad and happy hour menu. The make it or break it for us is seeing Lara behind the bar. She is by far the best and is always friendly/attentive to us! Thank you, Lara for always making our experience a great one!

Arrived at 1:30. For a late brunch. Lindsay was our wonderful server again today! Enjoyed the Barbacoa enchiladas, And the chili Reno plate! Chili Renos would be voted best in town wonderful crispy flavor on their batter, stuffing of the cheese! Only reason I don’t give it. Five stars is not real big on the Spanish rice. It’s good. It’s just not fantastic. Alfonzo was cooking today, and made artwork of all the plates that we had. Food tasted great and looked wonderful. Lindsey coerced into getting caramel churros and ice cream. So yummy!!
