"Nestled among the Great Smoky Mountains in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, is a true monument to monomaniacal collecting: Andrea and Rolf’s Salt and Pepper Shaker Museum.  Boasting over 20,000 pairs of shakers dating from the 1500’s to the modern day, the Salt and Pepper Shaker Museum is more than a tacky roadside stop or hobby room. Andrea and Rolf, the owners and curators, have been collecting shakers for more than 25 years, and they are thrilled to be able to share their knowledge on the topic with the world. Andrea, formerly an archaeologist, is the shaker expert, while Rolf curates and maintains the museum’s collection of pepper mills, of which they have about 1500. The couple are keen to impart some of the history and functionality of salt and pepper shakers, lest any visitor walk away wondering “why?” Of the many interesting facts the museum sheds some light on, the reasoning behind the number of holes per shaker seems to the most requested bit of info. As the operators of the museum will tell you, it depends on everything from the local culture’s view of salt and pepper in terms of health, the size of the spice grain, and even simple availability. It is surprisingly relevant information such as this that elevates the museum from simple kitsch to respectable collection.  The museum claims itself to be the only shaker museum in the world, although they also, surprisingly enough, have a sister museum in Castell de Guadalest, Spain." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Google
I give this 5 stars because I truly do not know if there is a better salt and pepper shaker museum in the country or maybe even world. We stumbled across this place because it was raining and we seen some shops to go in. We definitely do not regret it. Some interesting shakers in there. Owner said she is working on a scavenger hunt which would be fun add on to the experience. Very friendly and well set up. Worth the $3.65

Google
This is one of those quirky attractions that shouldn’t be missed and is definitely a 5 as far as we’re concerned. For $3 (less than the overpriced ice cream cones in town) you can see literally thousands of salt and pepper shakers. We spent a delightful time there and didn’t even notice they had closed. It was quite the journey through time and pop culture.

Google
Out of the hustle and bustle, off the main strip, you will find this awesome museum. Only a few dollars per person and comes with a discount if you purchase a set. There are so many kinds of shakers from cats and dogs to astronauts. They are organized by different categories, for example bird theme. Quite the collection and nice to get away from the crowded main areas.

Google
If u collect salt and pepper Shakers, this is a dream!! Over 20,000 very unique sets! Everytime you look you see something different! Owner was precious and gave us her complete attention. Only $3 admission and then if you purchase 1 of the 2000 sets available, you get the $3 back per set purchased. Will return and bring friends!

Kimberly

Google
The Salt and Pepper Shaker Museum is exactly what it sounds like. Rooms and walkways with over 40,000 salt and pepper shakers. If you are genuinely interested to learn more about where they are from, or what is collectible/rare, there are notes inside and around the display areas pointing out those specialties. It only cost $3 a person to get in, and that $3 can be used toward the purchase of your own salt and pepper shaker as you exit the building. (Those were kind of pricey, and could find online for less.) This museum is away from the main drag and is also close to some other places to try and eat if you need a break from the hustle and bustle of “down town”.

Google
Such a fun, unique place to visit in Gatlinburg! There are over 20,000 pairs of shakers, of any and every variety you can think of. It's really quite special and interesting! It costs a mere $3 per adult to visit, but I'd you choose to buy a set from the gift shop, you get $3 off the price, so it works out nicely. I am a ✨🧄garlic girlie🧄✨ so I loved the cute garlic bulb pair and purchased those to bring home. They look so cute on my dinner table!

Kiera Shively

Google
AMAZING experience to pay $3 to go see. Over 20,000 sets! I do not recommend buying anything out of the gift shop though. They say take pictures all throughout the museum except the gift shop which we now know why. We bought a set that costed us $27.. and found the same set in Pigeon Forge, TN at 3 Bears General Store for $9! Our parents also bought a set for $30 and saw the same one on eBay for $12! Please save yourself the money. (Last picture is the exact same ones we bought but at a different store for $9)

Kelly Carver

Google
For under $4 you must visit this place! Wonderful place with an unimaginable variety of salt and pepper shakers from around the world. They also have some you can buy including souvenirs.

Meghan R.

Yelp
So much fun! My mom and I thought we would be the only weirdos there when we visited on a recent trip to Gatlinburg - boy were we wrong! Apparently there are a lot of people out there that like salt and pepper shakers. It is only $3 per person to check out this museum with over 20,000 sets of shakers. And even better, there is a gift shop at the end and if you buy something they give you a $3 credit :) We spent almost an hour there and it was fantastic. And it was super fun to see that some of the shakers in their collection I actually had in my own collection. Definitely a fun stop if you are in the area!

Howard L.

Yelp
First time coming here, a family member recommended me this place since it was a great tourist attraction. He was right. For a few bucks a person, you can check out a really amazing and astonishing 20,000 + salt and pepper shakers. We paid in exact change to get in so cash is welcomed here too! Me and my wife spent nearly an hour here checking this wonderful place out. They got some merchandise at the end too. No restrooms by the way either. Wheelchair friendly environment.

Jen B.

Yelp
I absolutely LOVE a quirky museum. Thanks to my friend for directing us this way. At only $3 to enter, it's a fun and fascinating bargain if you are in the Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge area. Years of historic S&P shakers are on display, neatly organized in room after room of kitchy amazement. We spend almost an hour looking at all of the S&P shakers, even saw a few that reminded me of my childhood. Worth the stop and the price of admission!!

Amanda M.

Yelp
I have been looking forward to going to this museum once I looked up things to do in Gatlinburg! Omg! It was amazing! They give you a soft intro into all the salt and pepper shakers in the first room before hitting you with massive walls of shakers in the following rooms. They have over 20,000 shakers all neatly organized by categories and colors! It was so cool seeing so many shakers and being able to read facts about some of them! It's only $3 to go and it was so worth it! Highly recommend!!

Beverly B.

Yelp
Over 20,000 sets of shakers from everywhere to everything! You think they haven't made a shaker out of something think again! They even have blues clues Mrs salt, Mr pepper and paprika and include all 50 states! It's a must see for only $3!

Melissa I.

Yelp
I thought this was a cute attraction. It is small, but a lot to see. It only takes about 20-30 minutes to see the whole thing unless you are really looking in depth. However, it's only $3 per person admission so who cares?! That's super cheap. It was just crazy to see how many salt and pepper shakes are out there! Wow! Many are so unique, adorable and just plain old fun.

Amy A.

Yelp
Great seeing all the cool salt and pepper shakers. Definitely great to see at $3 per person. At the end, your $3 can go towards a set of salt and pepper shaker set to buy. Even if you have a group, only one person's $3 goes towards the purchase. Also, all the ones for sale are from Amazon for half the price. That's how they profit because it's their business, though.

Brittney R.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem in Gatlinburg. But beware, it's in a shopping area that was built in the 60's with NO PUBLIC RESTROOMS. None of the businesses in this area have a public restroom. They are currently in the process of building a new sandwich shop which will have new outdoor restrooms, bit it's not open yet. Note: the museum is extremely strict on covid rules. You MUST wear a mask to enter, even if you're the only visitor's in the building. The museum is family operated and owned. It is the mother's lifetime collection of salt and pepper shakers. You enter and pay the $3 to the son, start the tour to the left and walk through about 6-8 rooms/hallways. Each one is full of S&P shakers floor to ceiling on shelves behind glass. At the end is the families story, with newspaper articles, a map with pins of visitors, and a small gift shop. If you make a purchase, your $3 ticket price goes towards it. It's definitely worth the money and something to check out on your next visit if you have time.

Trudy C.

Yelp
Love love loved this place! I could spend hours in there!! Ended up buying two S&P shakers & I'm so happy to have them apart of my collection.

Kiki C.

Yelp
I was excited when seeing on it on Google maps, I bookmarked it and made time and effort to visit it in person. I figured it would be more like a display store rather than a typical museum. I just wish it has more stuff to interact with. Basically all you can do it walk by the glass display cases to see and take pictures. [Note: merchandises for sale are labeled "no photos"]. The merchandises for sale are also quite expensive (comparing to other sources) even after the $3 discount per set (so if two people visit together, don't think you can use one discount for salt shaker and the other one for pepper shaker). I also wish its website mentions that they have parking spots available. I spent over an hour walking roundtrip and what's offered there only takes 20 minutes max to see.

Kara H.

Yelp
I was looking forward to going here for a while, my first s&p shaker museum was in Iowa ...& when i mentioned it to them they instantly got very crappy about anything that had to do with it. which made my experience go down the toilet , i did like it til i spoke to a girl about another museum-i said "yeah the lady who donated all those are still alive" and she replied "no she died" i said "i was litterally there like a couple weeks ago and they said she was fine , when did she die?" "well it don't matter" was her answer i'm a customer asking a question - so therefore it should matter girl with dark hair was great, the other one with the short lighter hair wasn't great at all to me ...i get it it's a competition museum but it's in IOWA who cares enough to get crappy with a customer over speaking highly of another place? apparently they do lol legit was looking forward to it and after talking to her-doubt i care to go back honestly& i spent $100 in shakers there and just making conversations while being checked out left me speechless how she reacted to anything about another s&p shaker museum SPREAD THE LOVE DUDE JEEZE

Melissa K.

Yelp
Loved this place! The story of how this collection started is classic. Even saw a set i have and currently use in my own home. How some of these would have been used in a practical sense i have no clue. From what i understood, it is family run. They are very nice and helpful

Grace D.

Yelp
Awesomeness in a small, easy to enjoy museum! This is such a nice change from your traditional museum where you walk and read until your eyes and feet can't take it anymore. The museum is a nice place to stroll and enjoy seeing the fantastic salt and pepper shakers that have been created during the years. I totally appreciated seeing something we take for granted every day elevated into art! Then your museum entrance fee is returned to you as a discount when buying something! Win-win! Stop by and treat yourself to something you will always use and remember where it came from!

Traci C.

Yelp
Started our day with a visit to the Salt & Pepper Shakers museum. It's $3 per person to visit and they have over 20k items! Worth a stop if you're in Gatlinburg.

Chloe L.

Yelp
Very good annnd cute Pinocchio covid reminders in and outside of the museum, can it get better than that??? One of my favorite stops I have ever made!!! Photos posted are some of my personal favorites, but hopefully this is not too much spoilers... if you are a big fan of little ceramic or glass objects, please treat yourself to this absolute wonderful little museum with so much to love.

Cliff S.

Yelp
Family owned for decades, incredible collection. Very well organized and displayed. Thought provoking. Well worth time and moderate price.

C M.

Yelp
Amazing! Too many salt and pepper shakers to look at. So many people from all over the US visit. The museum has US maps with pins in them marking where everyone is from in the US.

Daphne B.

Yelp
Ok this was the highlight of downtown Gatlinburg. SUCH a hidden gem. The collection is their mother's 20,000+ pairs of Salt and Pepper Shakers. It was admirable on the way they organized and honored their mother's collection. Additionally, as a collector myself, I loved that our admission price went towards our purchase of shakers at the end. We purchased 3 pairs and I can't wait to add them to our collection! Also, as a side note, we did not have to wear masks and we were met with a ton of hospitality.

Katie S.

Yelp
This was amazing to see, all the different shakers from different time periods. I wish there was more to it though, like some interactive elements or even a timeline. I did find some shakers that looked just like my black and red huskies so that was awesome.

Becky G.

Yelp
It's a 4 star because I LOVE salt and pepper shakers! I was amazed at the amount of them here and so glad I went! The guy working was a little rude, not to me personally, but to others I overheard coming in. Like NO, you can't view the gift store or buy anything without going through the museum first. He was cocooned behind plastic sheeting and masks were MANDATORY! I felt like a leper a little bit. It's worth the $3.00 plus tax, a least for me.

Vivianne C.

Yelp
Such a fun place with extremely nice staff. I was also incredibly appreciative of their dedication to masking. It's the most safe I've felt while visiting the area. Absolutely recommend and personally can't wait to go back.

Jamie K.

Yelp
Adorable and kitschy. Don't skip it! Inexpensive admission that goes towards a purchase in their shop! So many to look at!

Zak M.

Yelp
Great little visit to start our day! Really enjoyable to walk through and see all the salt and pepper shakers. So many different and unique setups. And very organized too!

Jayne G.

Yelp
An odd little museum but interesting. For an admission fee of a couple bucks it is a nice way to spend an hour or so on a rainy day. It is exactly what the name implies...tons of salt and pepper shakers. Nicey arranged and fun to see old ones I remembered from childhood.

Heather C.

Yelp
A wonderful family owned museum filled with beautiful and unique shakers. I really enjoyed my visit here today. Well worth a visit. And, dog friendly: A very nice bonus! I will certainly return to visit again.

Kristin H.

Yelp
This is a fun little museum. It is a huge private collection of salt & pepper shakers from around the world. Admission is $3 and then they take $3 off the price of set if you choose to purchase at the end. It's a cool way to kill some time and see something interesting. Plus, dog friendly which is always appreciated!

Monica N.

Yelp
This place is very neat and a great collection to check out if you're in the area! You wouldn't think viewing 20,000 salt shakers would be that interesting but once you walk in, you're amazed by the vast amount in so many different styles! Food, cars, animals, antiques, and even pop culture, this place has practically any type of shaker you could think of. Admission fee is only $3 and is so worth it!

Joe M.

Yelp
An essential stop when visiting Gatlinburg. Take your time and look at everything, there is a S&P Shaker for everyone! We bought a pair of VW bus shakers that I never knew existed.

Alexis B.

Yelp
What a totally fun, completely kitschy stop in Gatlinburg! Exactly what it sounds like - a museum filled with one woman's enormous, interesting, hilarious S&P shaker collection! The shakers are divided into themes/categories - food, animals, etc. SO MANY. Admission is $3, but it's worth it. I love little random museums like this! Definitely the spirit of Gatlinburg!

Lindsay K.

Yelp
I've never seen anything like this place and I doubt I ever will! My partner and I stopped on our way out of town, and we're glad we did. The volume and variety in this museum is truly impressive! And for only $3.00 per person, I would definitely recommend stopping by if you're in the area. Such a unique place!

Nancy N.

Yelp
We had a great time at the museum this morning. It was fun going thru looking at all the shakers. My grandmother collected them. We had a good time searching out ones that she also had.

Sharon N.

Yelp
Paid the few dollars to get in. This is a look at someone's private collection of salt and pepper shakers. I was amazed how many there were, it was crazy to see so many. Like another review stated a weird place to say you stopped at......keep in mind you are dumped right into a "gift shop" Nothing negative....it was neat to see.

Lizz C.

Yelp
Gatlinburg's best kept secret. Anyone can find a shaker that speaks to them here! I knew I wanted to visit this spot while planning our trip, but I had no idea how cool this place was until we visited. 10/10!

Stacy D.

Yelp
So much to see! A neat trip down memory lane while also admiring unique artwork. Well worth the cost and time.

Elizabeth D.

Yelp
This is a very weird place. The ONLY reason to stop by is to say you did and to check the quirky museum off of your list. The museum is dark and the man that runs it is pretty rude. He wasn't particularly welcoming when we came in and told me to hold my questions until after I'd paid. For the record, I just had ONE question and only wanted to knows whose collection this was. Thanks for the wait to tell me it was your moms, weirdo. We walked through the museum, which is nicely organized by category. At the end I wanted to buy a couple of postcards for my own collection. The man was extremely rude and wouldn't let me use my credit card for the $1.00 charge. I explained that I didn't have cash, explained that I also collect things, and asked if he'd please take my card, he said no. When we came in, he told us that our $3 (each) admission could be applied to a gift store purchase, but he wouldn't allow me to apply that to the $1 worth of postcards. He said I'd have to buy some of his wildly expensive salt and pepper shakers to use my $3 credit. So I found $0.50 in the bottom of my purse and he still gave me a hard time about the one postcard I left with. This was all just unnecessary and left a very sour taste in my mouth. I should've said screw it and put the postcard back, but I want thinking quickly enough I guess. Yeah it's an interesting collection, but don't be a jerk and turn away money from paying customers. I think that the $6.70 I paid for my fiancé and I to tour the place was a stretch given the overall experience.

B B.

Yelp
My wife wanted to visit so I agreed. It was interesting and there are clearly a ton of salt and peppers shakers from the past.

Merritt M.

Yelp
I loved this! I'm really big on museums and the volume of shakers was extremely impressive! It wasn't expensive, the lady who was working was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly! There was something new around every corner. I would absolutely go back and look around again to see what's been added or what I missed last time. What I wonderful attraction!

Paisley T.

Yelp
Could you pass the salt, please? Haha.. But really. This spot is a lot of fun. Don't knock it till you try it. It's a no frills place. You'll walk around hallways lined with shelves full of shakers. Colorful shakers. Celebrity shakers. Wooden shakers. Antique shakers. Animal shakers. President shakers. Light bulb shakers. You'll wonder how people could have possibly thought up these designs. Crazy. Pay $3 and just have fun with it. Why not!?

Jenna J.

Yelp
If you have more than one in your family you pay $3 PER PERSON and can only use ONE of the $3 towards one salt and pepper purchase... plus customer service is mediocre and the prices are outrageous. You can find these on amazon for less than half the price.

Christopher S.

Yelp
What a great surprise. Who knew there was a place like this? We happened upon this wonderful museum and had the chance to visit. It was certainly worth the whole$3 price of admission. So many types of shakers, grinders and the like. Interspersed within the collection were small cards explaining different things about the collection.

Stephen E.

Yelp
The name says it all. Look, for a paltry $3 entry fee, you get to enjoy 20,000 salt and pepper shakers. I have no interest in shakers per se, but am always interested in obsessive collectors. The curator is a lovely woman who genuinely enjoys what she does. The range and size of the collection is impressive and they are displayed well. Just go or places like this may go away. This is the sort of tourist stop that is rapidly being replaced by Ripley's Believe or Nots and Wax Museums.

Jonathan W.

Yelp
This has turned out to be the highlight of our trip it was well presented and the owner very friendly we had a great time

David L.

Yelp
This is, by far, indubitably, and beyond a shadow of a doubt, the very best salt and pepper shaker museum.

David O.

Yelp
Such a neat place well worth the stop, cheap to get in and the kids even enjoyed it. There are so many sets its just amazing. Plus they have neat sets for sale in the gift shop.

Nico B.

Yelp
This place is so cute and quirky. There we're so many interesting salt shakers to see. It was a nice was to spend a half hour. And for $3 a pop, not a bad price.

Leslie B.

Yelp
Really glad we stopped, true trip down memory lane! Staff was friendly and displays were well organized. Bought some cute shakers and found later they retail for half the price online. Decided to accept that with a grain of salt ( pun intended) , just calling that part of the entertainment cost :-)

Gregory P.

Yelp
One of the best quirky museums in the US. It is an absolute must see if you are passing through Gatlinburg. The original collector sadly died three months ago, but her son has continued to keep the museum open. It's an amazing collection - really a unique history museum if you think about it.

April S.

Yelp
After seeing this amazing collection and meeting the woman behind it, I am in awe. In awe of the art-form that is the Salt and Pepper Shaker. You will never season your food with anything ordinary ever again. A MUST SEE!

Carlos B.

Yelp
It is definitely worth seeing. My girlfriend says they shouldn't be so cheap with the air conditioning. There is a whole lot to see, so make sure you have a high energy level.
