On the Grid : Salt Cellar

"Walking into the Salt Cellar is a zen experience. Treat yourself to the wonders of Himalayan Salt starting with the salt door inlaid with 100 Himalayan Salt tiles, to viewing the 500 pound Himalayan Salt lamp and ending with the near impossible search of selecting your own, perfectly sized, Himalayan Salt lamp (mine is shaped like a Lion and is amazing)." - Mainelyseo

On a busy street with paid parking. May need to park further away by a block or 2. Not really any options for free parking in this area but easy to walk to with lots of cross walks. The area has lots of cute little shops around that are in walking distance. Easy to spot sign for the Salt Cellar, it is a round sigh on a brick building. It is located in a basement but is so cozy and welcoming. They got salts you can buy to cook with, along with cook books to buy too. They have shampoo, moisturizers, mud masks, carved salt candle holders, salt lamps, salt cutting boards and a few more things. The salt room is very relaxing as it clears your air ways subtly and has a beautiful warm glow to help you meditate and relax. They have enough space in the room for a maximum of 5 people. The room is great to help people with respiratory issues, Asthma, if you're a recovering smoker or someone with allergies. Sessions are only 45 minutes long and they don't mind if you browse on your phone or chat while in the room. Cute experience I went once alone and the second time with a friend. At the moment since they're slow you can just walk in, but in the spring and fall they are busier so I would recommend booking ahead of time.

Great place! We held a private healing session in their Salt Vault which was amazing! Cali Rossen from Sacred Frequencies set the whole thing up for us and provided a fantastic, meditative experience focusing on overcoming limiting beliefs, reducing stress and an amazing sound bath that left us feeling energized and invigorated. Highly recommend!

Google
My mother and I tried the salt vault. It is supposed to help with respiratory problems. It is hard to tell if that is true. It was very relaxing and the mint eucalyptus smell was wonderful but I’m not sure it had any effect.

Megan Norman

Google
The idea is there but execution is not. The salt vault is in the store and not sound proof so it’s disruptive to the experience; a mom was yelling at her child not to lick the items. It was also disappointing they have cheap poolside lounge chairs. An improvement would be to either invest in actual lounge chairs or set mats up for the floor. Lastly, no water at all and no robes or slippers.

Google
Excellent shop with a large variety of salt products. Some are for seasoning food some are for cooking on. There are lamps and other home items made from salt. Also has a special room lined in salt to sit in to take advantage of the healing properties of salt as well. Definitely worth a stop to browse and pick up some unique gifts. Knowledgeable and friendly staff.

Who knew salt could be so interesting? Found this place while visiting Portland. Felt a bit upscale once you enter, but the saleslady/cashier was kind and informative. She encouraged us to try all the different types of salt they offered (truffle salt, sriacha salt, hickory salt, etc). They also have a water dispenser near the shelves if all the salt tasting makes you thirsty. Ended up buying some flavoured salt (bit pricy) and a pink Himalayan salt block (they have a bucket of large pieces for $10 and a chest full of smaller pieces for $5. Total bargain) Would recommend checking this place out to anyone in the area. Reasonable prices, good service, and pretty salt.

Google
Love this place! The energy is amazing in here. The staff was super knowledgeable and friendly. Can't wait to go back in the future. Would rather spend my money locally for a salt lamp then online anyday!

Google
If you want a great, relaxing experience, try this. If you have a cold, sinus or respiratory issue, get in there! It helps! Two times, I've cleared a chest cold immediately by a Salt Vault visit! Amazing.

Yelp
This is a unique store in Portland, ME a welcome change from the same old routine coastal shops. Everything in the store is made of salt blocks. It's fun to browse around and see what they can make out of the salt blocks even if you don't buy anything. The walls lined with pink Himalayan salt blocks made the place look serene and beautiful. There are salts for culinary use, chopping blocks, sea salt, bath salts, bath creams , lotions, lamps, and some even for everyday use though it didn't look like it was for sale, like a pen holder at the register! There is a room called "Salt Vault" that was roped off but you could peer inside. The walls, built of Himalayan salt blocks when illuminated with the Himalayan salt lamps, reminds me of the Korean saunas. The chopping block is really interesting. You can put your raw meat or fish on the salt block for 10 minutes per side before cooking. The salt is supposed to somehow infuse into the protein, making it flavorful. You can even put the whole salt block with the protein into the oven if you want. It's a fun experience to check this place out when strolling around the town.

Yelp
Wandered into this place just walking down the street. So glad I did. Haven't known much about salt but they had a cool variety of things from salt to eat, to lights, to even lotions and salt scrubs. The different flavors are unique in their own way. And a little goes a long way. Also I might add that the staff her was phenominal. The guy running the front answer all 400 of our questions politely. Definitely a place to check out in the area and get some local zen to take home. Be careful, if you take the black salt soak home, TSA may want to take it away from you like they did my friend! Triggered something in her bag sadly. Be sure to utilize the water or else you'll be thirsty if trying anything!

Yelp
A very niche store, but if you are looking for fun salts, of both the culinary and bath variety, you absolutely need to check this place out. The bath side was not in my wheelhouse, but the food salts were both plentiful and tasty. What really set this place apart though was the service - they were incredibly informative and offered tastings of the various salts they had for sale. Absolutely bought more because of how excellent the service was. Really great spot if you're looking for fun new ways to season your food!

Yelp
Love this place. The hand lotion is the best I have found, not greasy. You can schedule a visit to their salt room to relax and detox. Or you can purchase a salt lamp for your home. They have flavored salts for baking and cooking and salt slabs for grilling.

Yelp
Want to feel like a horse? I mean chef. I meant chef, not horse. Okay, actually if you want to feel like a horse OR a chef, definitely check out Salt Cellar. I've passed this place hundreds of times and never stopped because... why would I need a pink Himalayan sea salt lamp (which is what you see in their windows)? But they're way more than that - they're the most fantastic salt shop in the world (please note: I've never been to another salt shop, so take this statement with a grain of... well, you get it). After receiving some lemon flavored salt as a gift, and after trying a smoked sea salt in a cocktail, I suddenly had a need for flavored salts in my life. Enter Salt Cellar. Did you know you can try all their salts? Yep. As much as you want. One would think they wouldn't have the need to eat salt out of their palm, but when you've got so many amazing options to choose from, you end up doing it a lot (thankfully they have a water machine to help). Here's what I suggest: 1. White Truffle (if you like truffles, you'll like this very rich, complex flavored option) 2. Wild Porcini (aromatic and subtle, would taste amazing in a risotto) 3. Lemon Peel (they have a lemon salt, and a lemon peel salt - get the peel if you like citrus!) 4. Espresso (it tastes like espresso and salt, which might not delight you until you think about how good this would taste on chocolate or caramel) 5. Alderwood Smoked (campfire salt - perfect for cocktails!) Also, everything you ever wanted to know about salt - like how one of the world's largest salt mines being discovered by Alexander The Great's horses; the arduous process of smoking sea salt... for that matter, the arduous process of just "making" sea salt; or recommendations on what salt to put with what (tomato salt with BLT's, for example) - can be discovered here by the incredibly patient and friendly staff. P.S. They also sell spa salt stuff: scrubs, lotions, and soaps, too!

Yelp
Came to Maine for the first time and wanted to see new places and stores. Happily found Salt Cellar while walking down the street in Old Port and double backed when I saw what was inside. This unique store is beautiful and clean and stocked with goodies. I left with an amazing well priced gift for my friend who loves to cook. I was able to customize a trio set of salts for my friend, but they do have trio sets with themes like sweet tooth or girls night out. There are salt shot glasses, salt cooking boards, lamps, skincare for both men and women, etc etc. You will definitely find something for someone. You can also sample all the salts and see which one you like - from pepper infused to volcanic salt to lemon to rosemary etc etc. The Black Truffle is the most popular and for good reason - it is delicious. I actually returned the next day and got another goodie and tried the Salt Vault - Recommend. It's not a spa but it's a beautiful relaxing room where they pump saline air. Josh helped me with everything and was extremely kind, warm and welcoming. If he is there, he will make sure your time at Salt Cellar is amazing.

Yelp
The idiots go on vacation and don't even put it on their website. I would not shop at such a poorly run business! I will order online from smarter and more trustworthy retailers!!!

Yelp
Nice environment to taste test and shop. Great customer service. We bought 12 bottles of salt...3 for $20. Found a new salt-curry salt-that tastes yummy. My daughter enjoyed this store as much as I did. They even offer online shopping. Wish they also sold olive oils. Reminds me of my experience in The Filling Station at Chelsea Market, but a smaller scale.

Yelp
I got my husband a GC and I went also. We went through the store and really enjoyed it. The manager was great he told us all about the salt vault and what to expect. We had a choice the eucalyptus and mint or no scent for the ground salt that mists in the vault during the 50 minutes visit. We chose the eucalyptus and it was very nice. It was very relaxing but it was also quite chilly. The salt blocks absorb the cold so there was a space heater to help with heat. I had to leave my coat on and use a blanket under and over me to stay warm enough in the zero gravity chair. Next time I will dress warmer. It was a nice experience, salt is great for any respiratory or sinus issues which we both have. We did have a thin layer of salt on us and our shoes but it wiped off easily. I will definitely go again!

Yelp
Opened up to a whole new world of salt! Salt blocks, salt lamps, and a sea of different salt flavors. We sampled a flight of salts, from black and white truffle to icelandic flake and espresso. The owner also showed us the salt vault (which isn't open for customers yet) but looks like a relaxing way to kick back and unwind in a salt chamber. The products here make great gifts - we bought a few salts, some for ourselves and another for a friend. This is a must-see shop!!

Yelp
Fun spot. Loved all the different salt options but I am not a salt person so I did not make a purchase. My friends that I was with did and they said they love to cook with them.

Yelp
Salt is essential to life, but most of us probably don't spend a lot of time thinking about it. How many kinds of salt to you keep around? Maybe just the iodized stuff, maybe you have sea salt or kosher salt. Maybe you like getting fancy in the kitchen and have a flavored salt or two, habanero salt, smoked salt, something like that. How many more kinds of salt do you need? Come here and find out that the answer is more than a dozen. Sweet, savory, hot, more kinds of smoked salt than I'd considered as I previously and apparently foolishly thought salt was "smoked" or "not smoked" and hadn't contemplated that there might be multiple kinds of smoke. Garlic, rosemary, cherry wood, lemon... so much salt. There are also salt blocks for people excited about cooking on a huge pink block of salt, cookbooks focusing on good uses of (you guessed it) salt, and some lights made out of salt. In conclusion, salt salt salt.

Yelp
Lapin dragged me to this store because I have been in love with salt longer than I can remember. Upon entry, we were treated to a friendly and upbeat greeting. The store was packed with salt inspired goodies. Pink Himalayan lamps, coasters, infused salt, salt enriched bath products, cook books along with tons of other goodies. The prices are on the higher end but definitely a once in awhile treat.

Yelp
This is the perfect zen place to just to go explore! They have so many amazing slats you can buy. Whether you buy salts for food, baths, health reasons, or for any reason this place is a salt lovers heaven. I got a coconut body scrub and truffle salt which is amazing on anything even popcorn. The energy in the store is so relaxing and if you can you should try to go in the salt cellar. It's so cool.

Yelp
Not only does this establishment sell exotic flavor infused salt, but it also offers a salt therapy room, where you can relax and breathe in soothing salt air. I have a friend living in Minneapolis who highly recommends going for a salt air treatment if one have respiratory issues (and I have a mild case of asthma). When I visited her, she talked me into trying out a session. I felt amazingly refreshed after a 50-minute session! Imagine my delight when I stumbled across the Salt Cellar and found they offered a similar service in Portland! Even though I had an idea of what to expect, I was mildly surprised at the lovely area provided behind double doors at the back of the retail area. The atmosphere is soothing, with back-lit blocks of pink Himalayan salt comprising the walls. There are anti-gravity chairs facing the salt block wall. The host offered a light blanket if I wanted one, demonstrated how to position the chair, and pointed out how the salt air is regulated. I sat in the chair and tilted back. Gentle music was playing. I took deep breaths through my nostrils and just relaxed. After a while, I heard a gentle tap at the door. The session was over! When I left the Salt Cellar it was late afternoon. As I crossed the street, I realized my sinuses were amazing clear. I felt rejuvenated. I will definitely be back again!

Yelp
Oh man, what is the best thing about this place? Is it the perfect location right around the corner from Exchange St? Is it the helpful staff who are eager to talk salt? Is it the abundance of awesome items that make you exclaim "I need that!" at every turn? No, none of those. It's the fact that you can SAMPLE ALL THE SALTS, Y'ALL. Every time I go in to buy something I find a new favorite, but nothing can top the black truffle sea salt. Heaven in a jar!

Yelp
Date and I were eating at a restaurant nearby and we just had to check out the Salt Cellar before we left Portland, so we closed out our tab in the middle of our meal to head here and then return to our meal afterwards because we were that intrigued by this weird little store. They have salt bath and lotion products, salt shot glasses, culinary salts for every kind of food, salt Himalayan lamps, salt cook books, salt sweets and chocolate bars, salt holders, and more (phew!). Fun to explore, especially if you are a chef.

Yelp
It was my first time going to a salt cellar. My daughter and I went yesterday and loved it. The employees are friendly and make you feel very comfortable. The only negative thing I can say it I was a bit disturbed to see there is a camera in the room. It did make me feel a bit uncomfortable to think we could be watched.

Yelp
Visiting from out of state and shopped here. Really cool purchases included soup salters, twizzle sticks, salt stones for deodorant and healing and salt scrubs. Returned later for a Salt Vault treatment which was very relaxing and refreshing. Also helped me feel less sinus pressure and cleared my respiratory system. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Solid location of the excellent Salt Cellar, this one much better-run than the Portsmouth one.

Yelp
I walk by the Salt Cellar everyday but have never stepped foot into it until my friend came visit from out of town. Tucked away in the corner of Exchange Street, this unique store sells a ton of SALT. They have a variety of salts to sample, mostly for cooking. The store also sells cutting boards made of salt. What a cool idea- I've never seen anything like it before. Apparently you can place raw meat on the board and marinate it for hours. According to the storekeeper, an one inch cutting board lasts a year. They also sell amazing hand creams and body scrubs. Prices are a little steep but you are supporting a cute, specialty store so it's all good!

Yelp
What a place! I'm writing from my girlfriends yelp account. She loves salt and I've never seen her happier! She was in heaven trying all the different flavors. The guy who runs it seems pretty cool. Overall, great place to check out, especially if you love salt.

Gila M.

Yelp
Very pretty, modern and well organized store. Many wonderful gift ideas. The salesperson was especially kind and generous to my young son. Definitely worth a stop. The assortment of flavored salts and different salt products was intriguing and interesting.
google avatar

Keri B.

Yelp
I bought just the basic salt in the grinder, having been overwhelmed with the variety of flavors available, and I have to say it's the best salt I've ever had. I had no idea there'd be a difference in flavor for salt this way! I never had salt on my margaritas and now I use this- it's perfect! Definitely worth the visit to the shop- lovely ambiance there!
google avatar

Christine P.

Yelp
Cool store, we bought a bunch of unique salts, like lemon infused salt. Even if you don't buy anything it's fun to just walk around and browse.
google avatar

Yelp
Um, a store dedicated to salt is pretty much the middle of my wheelhouse. I couldn't pass it up. Lots of interesting iterations of salt, including fantastic blocks of Himalayan salt upon which you can cook. It's pretty yuppie and overpriced, but I forgive that given their wide selection and devotion to that delicious rock.

Lillie W.

Yelp
Amazing staff and really fun products. We especially liked the variety of seasoned salts for adding that special touch to a recipe.

Bonnie J.

Yelp
This was one of the most intriguing stores I've visited. Wish one was closer to my home-I would shop there for gifts and for my home on a weekly basis.

Yelp
This is my favorite store I found while visiting Portland!!! (Where are all the reviews on this place?) It's a small adorable store with more salt than you can imagine. I walked in and asked if they carried truffle salt. The man replied "boy do we ever" and walked me over to an amazing wall of finishing salts, all the flavors you can imagine. This is where I had my very first and only "salt tasting"....they even give you some water to wash it down between tastings. So many good flavors it was hard to choose, of course I got black truffle salt and a few gifts for others. I also ordered some online in June for wedding gifts! Great gift idea! There is also a large section of bath/beauty salts that I didn't get to because I was so obsessed with the finishing salts. I probably won't be back in Portland, but I will always reorder this online, forever!

Stephen G.

Yelp
This place has amazing artisan & Himalayan salts! Even if you don't intend to buy anything it's worth a visit.

Yelp
solid, carved himalayan pink salt shot glasses for tequila! awesome. they also have salt bath products and many different culinary salts, both for cooking and for finishing. i love salt, so i had a good time tasting them. in the end, i bought the red hawaiian as i already have several other salts at home. this is a great place to experience how different salts taste and what they can do for your meals.
