What a great experience to make this tour in the salt mine. There are timeslot entries and once you are inside you get an overall to put on. Then you board a small train that brings you inside the mine. When you get off you take two wooden slides down to the level where the guided tour starts. That slide was big fun for most of the visitors. With the tour you make a long walk with regular stops at interesting locations where you get information from the guide or via the audio guide in your own language. There is even a small boat ride over a salt lake with a light show when you are crossing. At the end you go up again with a lift, hop on the train and back to the entrance. The salt in the mine was formed over 200 million years ago, during the Triassic period, when a shallow sea as part of the Thetys ocean evaporated and left behind thick layers of concentrated salt. Over millions of years this salt was covered with rocks and with the forming of the Alps moulded and squeezed between rock layers With the tour you can see those layers in the walls and you can taste the salt. The salt is now extracted using wet mining where large quantities of water are pumped in the layers via drill holes. The concentrated salt solution (brine) is then pumped to a processing plant to be turned into salt for all purposes. In the shop you can buy this Alpine salt and more.

Interesting history of Salt mining combined with family fun (cart, slides, boating) in 1 hr. You can park the car for 4 euro on the parking on the other side of the river and road. Beware when weather is bad you need an umbrella to get to the entrance

The tour of the salt mine was very well organized. Unfortunately, taking photos and videos is not allowed. We went down some sections using slides, and there was also a boat ride on an underground salt lake, accompanied by beautiful light shows and music. It was a very touching experience for me. I highly recommend this program to anyone visiting the area.😊

The tour starts with a traditional railway into the mountain. Inside the mountain you can see and learn some interesting about the salt mining. The guided tour includes two times very cool slides from one to another level and a short crossing of an underground lake by boat. Recommend to buy you tickets online. Parking means extra costs unfortunately.

Really good enjoyed it, audio guides for us English people, was good fun really enjoyed it, the slides were nuts lol 😆 really hoped to have picked up a visitor guide book showing the caves and things as photos weren't allowed and I don't recommend even trying it. But they certainly like their salt.

A salt mine located in the middle of a beautiful mountain landscape. The water in the river is crystal blue. The tour in the Salt mine is impressive/fun for old and young. You're driving 600 meters with a little Train inside the mountain.

Good activity to do with kids and you can also explore the salt mine also. Perfect vacation here. However, taking a photo inside is not allowed but it not a problem😊 Tips: No need to wait if you buy a ticket in advance in order to choose the entry time before enter.

We didnt go in. It is a tourist trap. Tickets are expensive 25€ and ~32€ with some combined tickets, 50minutes guided trip. Its beyond me why there has to be amusement parks in saltmines. Torda salt mine was enough, also for a fragment of this price, and you could stay there as long as you wanted. Which is great for lungtherapy. Western countries are so kapitalistic they would even make air as a privilege... Basic human necessities like peeing is already an expensive privilege in most part of germany. No I dont have coins, No I dont want to buy the cupon down in the overpriced shop, tankstation or whatever. It is rare to find free toilet in germany. Their store: (Their tablesalt is slightly cheaper in the nearby stores.) +They have iodized salt with selene in the merch store. - They have iodized salt with extra fluoride. I remember fluoride was the main experimental material in the soviet era, they poisoned the water source of an entire village, it turned out it is causing people to become paranoid and an intense drop in their IQ. For pregnant women it is highly recommended to avoid it. It also causes tyroid problems and the dissolvement of calcium from the bones into the bloodstream. Im strongly against this. It is just a scam that is good for your teeth. It is against your brain. Its not something advised to put in your food, but it is already in the tapwater... Which may explain the behaviour of society nowadays. The fact they still successfully mistyped my name in their answer also just convinces me we did the right decision not going in... Just because the government, the authority, the american FDA approved something as food and somebody got bribed to bend over the lobbying, it wont make things healthy or beneficial for the people or their health. Tobacco, sugar lobby, hidrogenized ultraprocessed plant oils, fluoride..etc.

Yelp
What a fun tour! I was looking for something kind of silly to do on our vacation, and after a day up at the Eagle's Nest, this seemed like a fun way to unwind. You are given a miner's jumpsuit and a locker to put your valuables in....no personal recording devices on this tour! Next, you get picked up by a miner's train and the tour begins...you are taken directly into a mountain through some very narrow passages. At the end of the railway, you get off and begin walking through various rooms showing you the history of the mine, including various pieces of equipment used over the years. You learn a little bit about the topography of the mountain range and how extensive the mine and others like it are. At two separate points, you slide down a wooden slide, and go deeper into the earth. Smile, because there is one of those attraction cameras that catch your reaction to the descent. A little more walking and you are corralled onto a floating platform that floats (it's pulled by a pulley system) across an underground lake. The water is crystal clear and there is a very nice light show as you cross. At the end of the tour, you hop back on the train and ascend to where you originally got on. Someone is there to take yet another picture of you! Once you are off the train, you turn in your jumpsuit, retrieve your belongings, and exit through the gift shop. The gift shop consists of bottles of salt from the mine, as well as the usual touristy stuff: clothing, bags, postcards, etc. Parking for tourists is across the street in a paid lot with a tunnel to get you safely across the road. We were lucky, in that our tour had about 15-20 people in it, so we could see and hear everything quite easily. The day was sunny and clear, so maybe people just didn't want to be inside on such a nice day, but that is exactly when I would advise to see something like this, as it apparently gets very crowded on rainy days. 19/2021

Yelp
This place was informational and fun. The tour provides a history of salt mining in the area. You're provided a jumpsuit and go on a train ride, two times down a slide, and a boat ride. As somebody in my group said, it's like a Disney attraction.

Yelp
I went on the 3:30 tour today. I was shocked when I got out of the tour to realize it was 90 minutes later! A fun jumpsuit, train ride, 2 slides, and a barge ride later I had a great time. I also feel like I didn't get quite the level of information that the live German tour guide provided. I was given an audio guide that was helpful but was succinct. There is a small gift shop that has plenty of salts, postcards, and lotions. Overall, I'm definitely glad I went to the salt mines. Restrooms appeared clean, have a hook for belongings, but no toilet paper today (in either men or women's restroom) Have a €1 coin for the lockers (where you have to put all your belongings) The cave area is about 12 degrees Celsius so you might want to wear a jacket underneath the overalls You'll have to pay for parking at the parking lot No cell phones or cameras are allowed on the tour

Yelp
Coming here when I was about 8 years old, I left thinking that being a salt miner was one of the most fun jobs in the world because of a couple reasons: -You get to ride a giant slide to work in the morning -You get to wear silly overalls the whole time Nowadays I realize that manual labor is a tad overrated -- even if there are giant wooden slides involved. The Salzbergwerk mines are worth visiting, especially if you have children, but it's not really worth going out of your way for it. Basically, you're under a bunch of rock for an hour or so. If you try really hard you can probably imagine what that's like.

Yelp
This tour had its pros and cons I would suggest going on it if you have the chance. Starting from the beginning... we drove here and could not figure out how to get into the parking lot, there was an exit but no entrance nearby. And no signs pointing towards parking. We ended up parking about a half kilometer away and walking. The place was packed because it was raining out (as warned by Rick Steves). We weren't going to be deterred though even though we had over an hour wait til our tour started! The problem is there isn't very many places out of the rain to wait, so we went to their over priced restaurant. I had the Weiswurst with potato salad which was all very bland, and my husband had tomato soup which was also not very good. The waitress messed up our order and brought him Goulash, but made it seem like we had screwed up not her. Finally it was tour time! Pros: You get to wear a jump suit! Fun ride into the mine on a fast train Leaning a lot about how salt is mined You get a little thing of salt to take home that was mined there. English audio tour included The slides were fun! Cons: A lot of hurry up a wait.. wait for your time slot to be called, wait for your jumpsuit, wait to ride the train into the mine. Overdone light shows would have enjoyed the mine without that Expensive for what it was No photos allowed Too crowed I couldn't see some of the exhibits. The audio tour doesn't work until you are close enough to the transmitter (within 3 meters)

Yelp
From the excitement of dressing in mine clothes to riding a Disneyland-style train to enter deep into the salt mine, this was an incredible and unforgettable experience. It's fun for children and adults alike. You get to ride the multiple giant slides that the mine workers use, and they take your picture a la Disneyland. There's also a boat ride across a lake with a pretty light show. Throughout your journey through the salt mines, your group stops at informative centers detailing the science behind salt mines. Everything is in German so I got an English audio guide to help me. The lines and waits can get very long as it's a popular attraction, but it's well worth the wait!!

Yelp
This is a great informative and entertaining experience. It's easy to buy tickets and basically wait until your group is called to tour the mine. If you come during the busy season it can definitely get crazy with tour buses, large groups and stacked full tour groups. I think they do about 50 per tour and it takes about 45 minutes. It's fun dressing in the cover alls, taking the slides and the best part is the underground lake. There are lockers and bathrooms available on site and a decent little beer garden restaurant if you have to wait. We walked to the town of Berchtesgaden after, so it's close enough to plan a few things to do. Good for kids, fun for adults and worth the time to tour the mine, Gluck Auf!

Yelp
It was about 1 hour tour and time flew so fast that my 5 year old kid said "wow it's been 1 hour already?" You'll get to ride a train (it goes pretty fast in a tight road), big slide twice, boat with fun light show and elevator during a tour. The guide explains about a history of salt mining in Germany but you'll get English translation. It was fun and cool. Highly recommended!! By the way they have a family deal (2 adults + 1 kid).

Yelp
I was totally impressed! The last time I visited was in the early 90's and before that in the 70's so a lot has changed since then . While waiting for our time we had some food at the small restaurant on the premises nothing fancy but can't go wrong with some sausages :) the salt mines are well worth the trip! I suggest making reservations online for the saltmines to avoid long wait times

Yelp
Super fun tour of the salt mines. Train ride, hundred foot long wood slides (yes plural) and the boat ride across an underground lake were the highlights. The detail on the salt mining operation both modern and historical was well paced with the other activities. Do yourself a favor and walk down the road away from the onsite cafe and have lunch at the local Gasthof at the end of the road. Nice sunny biergarten and friendly staff. The Schnitzel had that extra something (Paprika) that made it stand out from the rest I had this trip.

Yelp
Tries too hard to make a tourist attraction. Hokey memorial to king Ludwig who had nothing to do with the mine out of salt was the first stop. Slides were fun but short. Laser show was corny. I would only do this if it was raining and the kids needed to get out.
