Salt Pans

The Salt Pans on the Gozo island is very remote and about 30minutes drive from the main ferry harbour. This is important as we nearly missed our Tour Ferry as they do leave dead on time. Pre-plan your stay to get back to the ferry on time as the Bolt / Uber can take a while to book with many cancelling midway pickup. There salt pans are amazing to see, but you cannot walk across them even to get to the cost line. There is shop midway accessed via a steep staircase. Every so often you will see some salt produced from the Salt Pan for tourists to taste, which I did and did not get sick. There is a touristy rickshaw taxi that takes you up and down the salt pan as the coastline is on a slope. We did see a parade of tourists on a quad bike so I presume there is a shop on top of the slope you can book to hire them for a guided tour of the area. There is a fast food and refreshments shop with toilets available for public use. Apart from the Salt Pans there is no much else to do.

Beautiful spot but you should we aware that Malta is a country where they hunt and catch birds, especially when the bird migration is going on, like now. They kill for fun and the hunts are not very well controled. Around the coastline you see these hunters everywhere. Birds in very small cages, hunters with riffles, speakers with birdsounds... We witnessed a lot of those spots and it is heartbreaking. We wouldn't have visited Malta if we knew this upfront.

Interesting to look at if you are passing- we stopped during a buggy tour if the island. Very exposed, I wouldn't spend more than 30 mins there and it can get extremely hot in summer! There is very little written info, just the view to enjoy

Such a cool place! And you can drive right up beside them and get out to take a look! Theres some information boards telling you about the history and purpose of the place, and there is a shop where they sell the salt (sadly it was closed when we went on Saturday)

So brilliant to see the salt being harvested. Great walking along by the sea. Great for swimming, relaxing and leisurely refreshments.

Very nice area to visit and walk around. Beautiful salt pans, easily accessible.

For a kilometer or two along the shore you'll find pools of salt water, irregularly shaped or perfectly squared. It is what it is.
