3 Best Day Trips From Vancouver | Condé Nast Traveler

"One of the most popular outdoor markets in Canada, held in Ganges every Saturday from April through October, Salt Spring Saturday Market features all things homespun. All vendors must “make it, bake it, or grow it” themselves, so you won't find any mass-produced tchotchkes here. Instead, you’ll find goods from more than 140 artisans, including pottery, jewelry, woodwork, fine art, and skincare products. The market started out as a showcase for organic produce, and you’ll still see fruits and veggies, as well as local cheese, chocolate, kombucha—but of course—and prepared foods like tarts, falafel, and potstickers." - Liz Humphreys

The Salt Spring Island Saturday Market is a vibrant, must-see experience! I picked up a jar of incredible Asian chili oil that added serious flavor to everything I cooked that week. Kutatás Wines had a booth with delicious small-batch selections—definitely worth a try. Beyond the shopping, the atmosphere is lively and welcoming. After browsing, I joined a fun group playing Chi Ball in the adjacent Centennial Park. It was such a joyful, energizing way to end the morning. Whether you’re into food, wine, home goods, or community vibes, this market delivers it all.

Nice small town market with many local artisans selling their wares. A wonderful way to experience the island and its people. Highly recommend visiting.

We timed our two-day trip to Salt Spring to include a Saturday so we could visit the weekly market. It was well worth the trip. Tons of vendors selling everything from popsicles to fine jewelry, and a happy, relaxed vibe. Can't wait to return!

We’ve been visiting Salt Spring Island for years and always looked forward to the Saturday market—until this time. What used to feel like a welcoming, community-driven event now feels marked by bureaucracy, heavy-handed enforcement, and an unsettling “not in my backyard” attitude. The no-dogs bylaw feels out of step with the spirit of the island and the kind of place Salt Spring used to be—open, inclusive, and laid-back. We weren’t even in the market but sitting quietly in the public park, minding our own business with our leashed dog, when we were confronted by an incredibly rude bylaw officer. The tone and attitude were completely unnecessary and frankly, unprofessional. To make matters worse, when we tried to find someone to speak to—no volunteers were around, no BCSPCA volunteers available , and no one seemed available to offer clarity. While that’s not the volunteers’ fault, it speaks volumes about how poorly this market is being managed by the council and policymakers. The entire experience left a sour taste. It feels like those in charge have forgotten what makes this place special. A little travel and perspective would go a long way—many communities around the world manage dogs and markets with grace, common sense, and hospitality. Salt Spring could take a page from their book. This is no longer the Salt Spring we used to know. A real shame.

Great market. The entire market is pretty large and has a good variety of local artists, farmers, artisans, food vendors, and more. There is also some spots for buskers within the market. It gets pretty busy in the summer at least. Which makes parking nearly impossible so be prepared to have patience.

Definitely the salt spring Island experience distilled into one place. A bustling hub of all kinds of different goods most of which are what you would expect in a farmers market and a great way to support local artisans. Be on the ready for some difficult times to find parking and if you have a pet, there is a dog daycare which I must say was most welcome. In some ways, this is a good place to visit on off days, there is a wonderful playground, beautiful shade trees, and other amenities such as a clean bathroom. Our favourite part was the music entertainment that was frankly, outstanding.

Yelp
The Salt Spring Island Saturday Market is a classic that everyone should visit at least once. There were many stands, selling everything from pottery and jewelry, to fresh vegetables and artisanal goods. There were also many snack stands selling street food and baked goodies! It does get quite busy, so I would recommend showing up before noon. Do note that the items are on the pricier side, but you can tell that each item is made with lots of love. If you are interested in handmade goods and unique finds, this is a must visit!

Yelp
This is on the top ten list of every travel site. It was very nice but crowded and a bit expensive. I appreciate that you get to see all the artisanal food together, but for me part of the charm of these things is seeking them out. A lot of arts and crafts such as carving, leather, and clothing. A really lovely felt flower maker. I've been to many many markets and this was good but didn't blow me away. Beautiful setting obviously and the vendors were chatty and informative.

Yelp
If there's one thing that everyone tells you to do when you visit Salt Spring Island, it's to go to the Saturday market. And, indeed, this is a well warranted suggestion. On a gorgeous July morning, we hoped to beat the crowds by going right at opening (9am) and easily found nearby parking. We walked along the disjointed boardwalk and storefronts to get to the market. Browsed at real estate listings along the way--just in case we decide to leave the city life behind. We enjoyed browsing through the local wares and crafts, especially intrigued by the Monsoon Coast spices--she was offering tastings of Chai tea and butter chicken sauce--both were out of this world. There were local mades soaps galore, gorgeous flowers, fresh vegetables, and delicious quiches and baked goods. Our new favorite--Wild Cider--had a stand, and there was kombucha, and bullet coffee available as well. After walking through the long market lanes, we sat in a sunny spot on the grassy knoll off to the side to enjoy some of our finds, and watch the relaxed hustle and bustle of the market around us. Kids were playing on the jungle gym, adults were hula hooping, and many others were just hanging out enjoying the sunny day.

Yelp
From Easter Weekend to the last Saturday in October, Salt Spring smushes everything that is charming about the island into one handy, dandy spot - the Saturday Market - and it is de-freaking-lightful! Don't believe me? Let's tally the charm points: 1. It's next to the ocean in a park. 2. Every vendor has to have made what they are selling, so you don't get junky booths. 3. They let kids set up booths for free. Yup, at the Salt Spring Market you can buy groceries AND a drawing of a dinosaur. 4. The range is surprising - you get a lot of the hippie dippie stuff you'd expect on Salt Spring (don't misread me, I love that stuff too) but there are also some very modern places doing cool hipster clothing or very classic art. 5. It's across the street from the ice cream parlour. 6. They have all sorts of food and you can eat it while sitting on the grass, in the park that is next to the ocean (see #1). 7. Pear tarts. And that's the shortlist. If you don't want to visit here, you obviously need a hug.

Yelp
No dogs aloud here or in the city park. Not very friendly atmosphere. Traffic was non stop and made it hard to even cross the street. By far the busiest island in the Gulf Islands. Would not come back.

Yelp
A great market with all kinds of talented artisan creations....jewelry, clothing, décor, soaps, baking, fresh produce, etc! We couldn't believe how big it was and how much there was to see. A nice way to spend the morning!

Yelp
Really really like this market!! Came twice and a couple years ago and today have several similar ones so if you didn't get it once you can always have another chance, but sometimes they have new booths or artists/food and more. There are bakeries, fresh veggies or fruits sometimes even meat, clothings, jewellery or other sorts of accessories, ceramics, artwork, origami, food, drinks, cheese, jams, vinegar, baby items, soaps, sheep or alpaca fur items, and much more. Do always have quite some people even on a bit of a rainy day. A few parking spaces around and walking distance to many inns or resorts, it's an easy access. Lovely artists and people there! Even if you don't plan on buying things I really highly recommend to go check it out even if you just walk around, maybe talk to some people, just looking at artwork and handmade things are amazing, or just go and take a look to have the local experience.
