An 8-day Sailing Trip to This Part of the Caribbean Became My Family's Most Adventurous Trip Yet

"Salt Whistle Bay, a glorious cove on the island of Mayreau. Dotted with rum shacks and windblown coconut palms, it instantly became our new favorite spot." - David LaHuta David LaHuta David LaHuta is a Bermuda-based travel journalist, TV host, and the author of “Frommer’s Bermuda.” He’s visited more than 60 countries, appears on networks including the Travel Channel and CNN, and regularl

"While most of the Grenadines’ most luxurious hotels cater to the one percent, Salt Whistle Bay, on Mayreau, offers a blissfully pared back—though no less exclusive—experience. You’ll feel like a modern-day Robinson Crusoe when holed up in one of the 22-acre property’s eco-friendly bell tents or stone bungalows, each outfitted with colorful rugs, fans, and plush linens, and positioned to capture ocean breezes. By day, swim with sea turtles, sting rays, and tropical fish in the surrounding reef-filled waters—snorkeling masks are free to guests, as are stand-up paddleboards—or try kiteboarding on the resort’s designated beach. By night, share those adventures over a dinner of grilled lobster at the on-site restaurant and bar."

"If you were to picture the perfect Caribbean beach, it would probably look something like Salt Whistle Bay on Mayreau. Here, clear, turquoise waters lap at 2.5 miles of sparkling white sand, while palm trees, seagrape plants, and flowering bushes provide shady spots for lounging. At one end, you can walk the few yards of land that separate the Caribbean and Atlantic sides of the island. The only catch is that you’ll need a boat to reach the beach, so rent your own or book a day sail to Mayreau."

The Island was tragically hit by the hurican 4 months ago. The buildings are partly rebuild. The hotel itself looks like an aboned ruin. Close a new areal with bungalows will be build. The island convinces with a nice view, beautiful beach and clear water. Also tasty food like ribs, chicken, lobster till to the catch of the day is available.

Like most people visiting here, we were on a sailboat. We work while we are long-term cruising and require constant connectivity. I was ashore sitting under one of their shelters (using my own data plan) and an extremely agitated staff member came up to me and very rudely kicked me out of their property. "you can not use our facilities without patronizing our bar". "I am happy to patronize your bar". "that doesn't mean buying a beer". Well - at the time there wasn't much else to buy there (they were not serving food for the days we were there). I didn't argue. I apologized and went back to my boat and finished my work day never to spend a penny at this bar. We find many places get it for cruising sailors like us and do everything they can to accommodate us. Again, if we can't connect, we can't work and if we can't work, we can't come to your little island. It's as simple as that. Hopefully, this place will come to understand that but I won't be back to find out.

Recently spent a week at Saltwhistle. Having holidayed in the West Indies many times over the past 25 years Saltwhistle has always been on my radar, so I was very pleased when it reopened. It did not disappoint. The situation is superb and the resort is unruffled relaxation. There are just 8 rooms in a semi circle beneath the palm trees a few yards from the beach with the restaurant/bar and some stone cabanas about 100 yards further on. The beach is gorgeous, a semi circle of sand and clear, calm water on the Caribbean side and rougher, with entertainment provided by the kite surfers, on the Atlantic. The food was consistently good, the fish (mahi mahi) and chips was excellent! There are also 4 or 5 local bar/restaurants at the southern end of the bay when you want to ring the changes. There are generally quite a few charter boats in the bay, but I guess the resort would struggle without the trade they provide to the bar and restaurant during the day. Last, but not least, a word of thanks for Nikita. I arrived in Mayreau on Gem Star, the twice weekly ferry, and intended to leave on it when I moved on to Bequia via St Vincent. The afternoon before I was meant to leave Nikita found me to let me know that the ferry had broken down and that she was trying to arrange a water taxi to Union and then a flight from there. This she managed to do, only to find out later that Union airport had closed because the fire truck had broken down! She then managed to change the flight so that I would fly out of Canouan, which duly happened early the next morning. Thank you Nikita!

Nice bay, awesome beach. Go to Freddy's restaurant or just for drinks. Beware of the bats flying all night. They might fly into the boat and make a mess, so keep everything closed or protected with a towel or something.

A lovely hotel. You arrive by boat, it drifts onto the sandy beach and you step onto the shore. Your cases get lifted and taken to you bungalow, located amongst palm trees. The bungalow is semidetached with a huge shared open seating area above with table and chairs. The windows all have netting in place (and it looked well sealed), the bed had a mosquito net (so you felt really safe). during our 4 night stay Jan 2019, we only saw 2 mosquitos, but we found it comforting to be protected.||The rooms were well appointed (no TV thank goodness), with fridge, storage for clothes and a water dispenser for drinking water. there is no A/C but there was a room fan and the design of these bungalows provide excellent ventilation (we were never too hot, even at night).||The bar staff were very good and friendly, especially Alysha - thank you. The reception was manned by friendly staff and we found Nikata especially helpful, arranging water-taxis and towels/loungers for the beach. it was also great to see those staff sweeping leaves and sand were smiling and friendly.||A trip from this hotel to the Cays to see the sights was short and inexpensive for a personal boat trip.||Very pretty beach, excellent location, no beach sellers on beach. ||Kite surfing on the windward beach, yachts, swimming and some snorkeling on the leaward side of the sand bar (see website).

We were sailing with the catamaran and we decided to have a dinner at this place. We had an amazing experience. The service with Daniel was incredible. She was nice, helpful and really sweet. Justin the chef accomodate my dinner with a very nice and delicious vegetarian dishes. The mahi-mahi was perfectly cooked and the lobster was good too. |We will come back for sure for breakfast.

Having recently stayed at both Salt Whistle and a fancy foo foo resort on another island I can tell you what Salt Whistle has that is not available elsewhere. Basically, authenticity. If you prefer a sterile cookie cutter environment that could be cloned and put anywhere, this place is not for you. If you would like a true immersion in to island life, interactions with the locals, comfortable yet rustic accommodations that let you know in every moment that you have been transported to a tropical oasis of yesteryear then make your reservations now. There are only 7 stone bungalows currently available as they finish renovations on this unique resort that is recovering from a 5-year shutdown and neglect. Lovingly restored and eager to please adventurous guests the staff is open to suggestions and proud to display their progress. Friendly and watchful eyes will have beach towels on your favorite chair before you know it. Busy bar tenders will have your drink ready before you brush the sand off your feet. Food is expensive but you have to remember that everything is shipped to the tiny island. You are paying for the ambiance and atmosphere of a well-cooked meal in an open beachside pavilion. For a change of menu try taking a short walk to the variety of nearby beach bars where families will happily prepare more food than you can eat, I promise. For 3 days I walked right by the small but well stocked and totally local flavor mini mart before discovering where you can stock your in room refrigerator with juice and snacks. Stop by the fruit stand for bananas, the best coconut ever, fresh pineapple and other exotic fruits. Get your hair braided my the masterful Iceland and not have to worry about it the rest of your vacation. All located steps from the edge of the resort property. Before arriving I googled every single video and web site trying to figure out the location of the bungalows on the property. I have since suggested adding a map on their web site. I can tell you now that they are all relatively equal distance to the water and all the same. I short walk will have you on the beach or at the restaurant and bar. No worries. The rooms have the oh so satisfying bug zapper rackets to clear any mosquitoes out of the cocoon of your bed netting at night. To complain about the bugs seems so silly to me, you are in the tropics by choice. Rather put the energy in to combat and bring some good bug spray and after bite cream. The beds are very comfortable. This to me is an important aspect as aching hips are very distracting to a vacation. And best of all about Salt Whistle is the location. The water in the bay is perfectly clear and gorgeous shades of Caribbean blue. It does not seem effected by the dozen or more Charter boats anchored offshore. A short walk across the peninsula and you will find the Atlantic waves crashing ashore under the Kite Surfers. Fantastic snorkeling can be found along the stone wall at the edge of the beach. It’s all perfectly situated before you. This is a special place for people looking for something authentic and different. Enjoy, but leave room for us when we return.

Place has potential, but the management and staff are inexperienced. When we arrived our room was doubled booked. There was no apology by the staff. They said there was a tent, but it had to be cleaned. That took nearly two hours. The tents use a group bathroom with no mirror and a horrible group/shared shower which is just pipe and a hose on the wall. No hot water. The tent is not glamping as it is just a bed and a lamp in a tent. When they cleaned the tent they left the flap open and it was filled with mosquitoes when my husband and I got into it. We asked the staff for mosquito or fogging spray and they said they don't do that and to deal with it. The food was medicore at best and extremely expensive. Worst cooked Tuna steak I have ever had. The bloodline was left in the fish and therefore it was inedible. The cat had the best meal ever that night. They were out of breakfast food the next morning. The hotel is impossible to get ahold of even after months of calling and emailing to confirm the booking in advance. I would recommend a pass.
