On the Grid : Saltchuck Pies

"Give me all the pies... seriously. Don't let anyone tell you a savoury steak and cheese pie shouldn't be followed by a delicious rhubarb-berry pie. The perfect spot to warm up and catch up, or grab some snacks for the road. Saltchuck knows that they don't need to diversify their product offering to please everyone - they're already doing it." - The Number

The beef and mushroom pie had a good crust, but the filling didn’t have much complexity—just salty. The butter walnut tart had a bad crust, but the filling tasted good.

I liked the butter tarts, curry sausage roll, and the peach turnover. It tasted sweet but just the right amount. The place is really clean and it has nice music.

Stopped in for the first time and got two pies for lunch. The brisket pie was awesome - real brisket and very filling. The chicken pot pie was also great with an herb filling. Some of the savory pies are fully wrapped in dough while others are in tins with just a dough crust. We had one of each and it was flaky and tasty on both. Inside is simple with vintage 50s tables. We'll be back to try some of the dessert pies and more of the savory.

I placed a large order to be picked up just before they closed on Saturday for a party. The ordering process was seamless, pick up was quick and easy and the pies and sausage rolls were amazing. The guests loved them. I highly recommend Saltchuck pies for any occasion.

This place is so great on so many levels. The staff are super friendly, the cafe is cheerful and bright, the pies and rolls are stellar, and the desserts are first class. It's great if you've got a hungry crew in need of snacks, it's a fun place to take mother for a light lunch; and a gift certificate for one (or more) pies is always received with delight. As a working person always on the move, I have to say this as well: easy parking, clean accessible washrooms, and fast service is a definite bonus and so appreciated.

An absolute gem and a true Victoria institution. The pies are out of this world — the crust is incredibly flaky, buttery, and rich. The fillings are wild and unique, from bison and roasted corn to kangaroo, plus a wide range of vegetarian options. The only reason it’s missing a star is the somewhat dismissive customer service. I’ve been a few times and was always greeted a bit coldly, often waiting a minute or two while staff finished a conversation in the open kitchen before serving me. Also, paying nearly $50 for a savoury pie like the Turkey Diner feels steep.

Amazing pies. Incredible pasty and equally delicious fillings both savoury and sweet. The kangaroo, red wine and mushroom was extremely tasty and the butter chicken equally so.

Recently purchased a Beef and Truffle pie - oh my... Every bite was a delicacy. My strong recommendation 😊 Last time I had a Cornish Pastie this good, I was in Cornwall. Saltchuck pasties are baked on the premises, and it shows. The people who baked these, really know how to make an excellent Pastie - and their Beef with Truffle pies are now added to my list of excellent pies. The beef and truffle was rich in flavour with an excellent flaky pastry. I could not recommend it too highly. If you want a high quality pastie, I recommend driving past every pie shop in town, until you reach the Saltchuck Pie Company. Here, you can buy a pastie that is plump with high quality, tasty ingredients. The pastry was just perfect for taste, texture and thickness. The meat content was much higher than the veggie content, and all in all, it was an excellent small meal. These bakers have paid it forward, to earn a well deserved Five Stars. I'll be back. ... and now I am back, having just celebrated my birthday again. I purchased frozen pasties for my guests, and baked them at home (instructions were supplied) I provided nice ketchup and other condiments to enjoy with the pasties. It all went down a treat 😊. My continuing full endorsement.
