My husband and I embarked on a scenic Fall foliage drive during the last weekend of September, with a pit stop in the charming mountain town of Nederland, CO. We decided to grab a quick bite at Salto Cafe. Having already indulged in coffee earlier that morning, we opted for salads and a side of sourdough toast with butter. I ordered the Greek Salad with grilled chicken, and it met my expectations. The portion size was just right for me. On the other hand, my husband chose the Caesar Salad with grilled chicken. While he liked the flavor, it left him wanting more, and he wasn’t too keen on the texture and consistency of the dressing. The cafe exudes a welcoming atmosphere, and its outdoor seating is a perfect choice when the weather is pleasant.

Nederlands own Salto Coffee, where you see the owner running the roaster as you walk in! Excellent Coffee and atmosphere. Beautiful building with outdoor gas fireplace and table seating. Friendly locals dine and work on laptops here. Comprehensive Bike shop next door. Street is one way from downtown.

Portions are small and more on the pricey side. Ordered the biscuit egg sandwich for 6$ and it was very small but good quality. Would rather of paid more for a larger meal. My friends and I all agreed they had good coffee and custom syrups. Atmosphere and building are very atmospheric. Where the building is located though is under construction. Other cafes offer better views. Also no almond milk alternative offered.

Google
Great coffee. I had the Peruvian light roast, highly recommend. Really cool store with lots of cool pastries and products. Be prepared, it’s a bit pricey, $5.70 for a pour over. But if you’re looking for the best coffee in Ned, this is it.

Google
Great little cafe, love the outdoor patio and fireplace. They have beer and wine as well. I didn't try any bakery items or food this go around but they do have some tasty looking items. Lovely staff, very friendly. Street parking.

Google
What a fantastic place! High ceilings and beautiful art, beautiful coffee, good food (falafel pita, in this case.) I love the additional unique flavors - I got orange cardamom in my latte. I'm staying with friends in town and it's their favorite of the three coffee shops in town. The power even went off while we were there (on the first trip) and they just kept on going with whatever they could do! (We came back when the power came back on.) Edit - I've been back on a Sunday morning and really enjoyed another orange cardamom latte, a scone, and an egg sandwich, all of which were wonderful. That scone was huge and pretty amazing, in particular. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Cute coffee shop! The ambience is rustic & cozy feels. I love that they have a fire place inside and outside! My fiance got the hot chocolate and i got the matcha latte. I was thrilled to see it is unsweetened. The cashier / barista is was super friendly and made the drinks quickly. Their baked goods looked amazing. When i was there, they were just taking the cookies (size of your head) out of the oven, and omg i was tempted to buy one because of the smell! I am on a diet, so i had to resist. Another 2 items i saw that was very enticing were salmon & cheese pastry and chicken pot pie. They even have a special apres menu from 4-7. I will def be back! Great place to go to before or after a hike or ski day. Oh, next door is a place you can wax and edge your gear for a very affordable price.

Yelp
NO COUCHES - VERY SAD. I'm handicapped. Big table selling stuff at the entrance - SAD. Coffee is still good. Stars for location & coffee.
google avatar

Yelp
Very good coffee! Only problem is they are pretty slow a lady that worked here but had the day off ordered after me and they made her drink right away! Kinda annoying but not a deal breaker will probably be back again.
google avatar

Daphne F.

Yelp
Extremely cute decor. Greeted and helped with purchase quickly. Delicious coconut milk latte.

Alanna C.

Yelp
Loved the orange cardamom iced latte! Plus, the employees were super kind. When I accidentally spilled some of my coffee they told me not to worry about it and quickly helped clean it up. They even offered to top me off! Plus, they have an adorable patio and looks like some nice bakery, wine, and beer options.

Yelp
Pretty horrible, crappy coffee not hot enough, crappy people behind the counter obviously not happy, good bagel-wich though but after a cold nigh camping, go elsewhere. A place of cold and humorless people that serve very bad and overpriced coffee. Again, after a cold night camping in a gorgeous place, go somewhere else for a hot cup of coffee. Slow and insulting Internet connection, and this is completely across the board, crappy and loud music and this one gets me, it is generational and not one eating establishment, coffee or high priced restaurant, "dinner music" is usually appropriate for skating rinks.
google avatar

Onyx S.

Yelp
My partner and I got breakfast sandwiches with no bread, for a keto friendly brunch. It was delicious and the staff were super helpful! The drinks are also high quality and they have the best non-dairy milk options! We sat and worked for hours here, and I would come again. The music and atmosphere they curate is exactly what I want for a coffee shop to work in.

Yelp
Salto, salto, salto... I'm not sure what your name means, but to me it's music to my ears! Well, I guess my tastebuds. ;D Like many, we drove up for the day to experience the treasured mountain town that Nederland is and stopped in for a caffeine awakening before making the trek down the hill. We'd never been in so we weren't sure what to expect, but quickly dug the vibe. There were tables to dine in, games to play over your drinks and meal & (the best thing always) a super chill and nice staff. Feeling adventurous, I asked the barista how this drink with espresso, tonic, and orange cardamon syrup would be? It's been a few weeks, and I didn't write the name of it down. Sorry -__- I'm sure if you gave that description, they'd know lol :D Anyways, she said it was delicious and her favorite thing on the rotating menu. Totally, sold it to the blind buyer I was haha. So she makes it, calls my name and then I sip. Turns out, I am sipping the most delicious drink on the menu! She did not lie! It was the absolute perfect espresso drink for me -- a lighter, more refreshing option than a latte. Instantly, I became obsessed and made my trusty stead look up a recipe. Saltos version is definitely Queen, but we've figured out a mighty runner up! Highly recommend trying it there before you make it at home, it's a great espresso option for non-milk drinkers, milk drinkers who are just too full from a prior meal, and for all espresso drinkers who are looking for a fresh new spring/summer fling. Can't wait to stop back in next time we're in town! Big thank you to the staff and ownership for the experience. :D

Yelp
A great multi-service coffee shop in this quirky town. I was pleasantly surprised how this hipster vibe exists at the end of an otherwise vacant street. Pleasant inside and out and most importantly, good java. I had the brewed coffee Gypsy (from Peru? ). It is a one stop kind of place with a small menu. Beer and wine available. Small selection of items for purchase. I would have picked up some beans, but it was towards the end of the day and the clerk was busy cleaning up. Free refills on coffee! The adjacent structure rents out bikes and equipment.

Yelp
The drive from Boulder to Nederland is a favorite of mine. So on a beautiful day with not a care in the world, I drove up the mountain to Nederland's quaint "downtown" district. I felt like hunkering down at a coffee shop and Salto appeared to be the only option. Talk about an impressive location! Huge outdoor patio with a fireplace and plenty of seating to boot. The indoor space is just as spacious, with high vaulted ceilings, counter seating by the windows and an indoor fireplace adding to the coziness of the cafe. Throughout my time there, I ordered a few Ethiopian pour overs, a sandwich and a beer courtesy of Odell. You can tell they roast their own coffee. The pour overs were really bold and fruity. They bag and sell their own coffee beans, you'll be tempted to purchase one for the road! Their food menu has definitely decreased in size due to Covid. There were only a few options while I was there. I ordered a sandwich that did the trick in my time of need, but to be honest there was nothing memorable about it. Luckily my beer washed it all down. Nice cozy spot in Nederland that's worth venturing to. Plus it's connected to a bike and ski shop, so you can kill time in there, as well.

Claire R.

Yelp
Lovely interior but espresso machine absolutely needs to be cleaned and calibrated. Espresso is consistently burnt and watery, even when I go months in between visits.
google avatar

Nicole R.

Yelp
Stopped by on a Saturday morning and was blessed with perfect weather so enjoyed a spot outside by the fire pit. Tried a cappuccino with oat milk and it was perfect. Ps- I'm a coffee snob. I believe they roast their beans as well. Lots of baked goodies to try and next time I will try one. Friendly staff, inviting interior and clean.

Yelp
This is the cutest little town - if you find Salto, you've found a hidden gem. The seating area inside and out is a vibe, their coffee is *chefs kiss* and their breakfast was delicious.

Yelp
Rough first visit with Salto. A friend comes here frequently with his biker group and so recommended it for our pit stop back to Denver. We had a decent sized group with us this visit and all ordered on one tab. We tipped well and were polite. However, when we double checked which one of the lattes was decaf, the barista became annoyed and said she didn't hear that so no decaf. And if we want a decaf, we will have to pay again. Despite us quickly agreeing with no interjections (our friend needed decaf for a reason, after all), she continued to be rude while making the drink. She kept saying, "I didn't hear decaf. Unless someone else heard decaf, I'm charging you." (Someone else did hear the decaf order so to her credit, she didn't charge us). Strange experience over a miscommunication... Coffee was pretty good and cute patio otherwise.

Yelp
This is a great spot for coffee and pastries in the morning or in the middle of a ride up from Boulder. Their macaroons are my favorite. I always get one chocolate covered and one plain. Excellent coffee too - roasted on site.
google avatar

Sasha T.

Yelp
First of all, thank you Salto for taking the protocols you have in this strange COVID reality. Everything was delicious. The cold brew is strong and suited well with oat milk. The falafel pita was surprisingly awesome. Too many places have jumped on the falafel bandwagon and aren't doing it justice, but Salto is! The patio is aesthetically pleasing, sustains social distancing, and its tables are cleaned often and seemingly thoroughly.
google avatar

Linda G.

Yelp
very disappointed with the avocado toast - there was no avocado just a light smear on top of bread. They need to look at a redo on that.
google avatar

Vivian C.

Yelp
YUM. Lots of coffee to choose from and the quality is extremely delightful. I haven't had this good quality of a latte in a long long time. Next time we stop by Nederland we are definitely going to come here to get caffeinated. My fiancé also enjoyed his pour over coffee, but wow I enjoyed my latte too much and just finished the entire thing in less than 5 minutes and wished I could experience that again. Very tasty and very cute atmosphere inside.
google avatar

Amber M.

Yelp
Salto has become my go to local coffee shop on those rare occasions when I am able to work from the mountains. It has the right environment, with many available tables and outlets, and tasty food and beverages. If you order coffee, you get a free refill. Service has always been good and the environment is pleasant. I have also enjoyed coming here for events on occasion. There have been fun apres ski, educational, and art showing events here in the past, so I recommend keeping an eye on their calendar.

Yelp
Amazing coffee. Great ambiance. Very friendly staff. Would love to come here again!!.

Yelp
Best coffee in Ned. Fun environment both indoor and outdoor. Adjacent bike/ski shop makes it fun.

Lori S.

Yelp
Great food and ambience. You can sit outside and they are dog friendly. The mimosas are delish!

Yelp
Stopped by here after a hike/camping with friends and it definitely hit the spot. The atmosphere is hip but not inaccesible. I had a delicious cold brew and my friend enjoyed a very good horchata. We sat outside under a hot sun while enjoying our food. I chose the three tacos with rice and beans which came to slightly more than the online listed $13. Considering the tacos are small the food is not cheap. But mostly I enjoyed the taco including the pork (carnitas) which was my favorite. The chicken (pollo asada) was pretty bland.
google avatar

Brianna R.

Yelp
We stopped by Salto after hiking to Lost Lake, and I wish I would have had a book with me to stay and hang out in their space. Maybe it was the drizzly afternoon, but the hot latte and cozy atmosphere stole my heart! The house made syrups are incredible and we really enjoyed our lattes! I saw others munching on breakfast burritos that looked really yummy. What an excellent spot!
google avatar

Amanda S.

Yelp
Great place to stop after a hike or in this case snowshoeing. They have food and really great coffee and lattes. The tacos were perfect after a hike. If you come on a nice day there is outdoor seating.

Chloe S.

Yelp
One year after this review i have decided to revisit my five star recommendation. I said the loaf was moist and we enjoyed it. And that was true, but as you can see in the attached image, we didn't finish the loaf. How good can a loaf be if you don't finish every bite? I wish I had this clarity at the time but I was in a frenzy from the coffee and the good conversation with my friend. I promise to never leave a review under the influence of coffee again and to always wait until the dust settles to leave a five star review

Yelp
Salto is the second coffee and beer business I've visited recently. This location and layout is made for relaxing. The food is good, service is friendly and it has a large lounge area inside and outside. For food, I've had the burrito and tostada. The salsas range from mild to spicy depending on your meal. The guacamole is quite good. It's nice because you can craft the meal with a selection of meats or vegetable fillings. It has a small selection of craft beers (I hope so, Phil - it's a beer place) and I like the Dirt Wolf Double IPA currently offered. Order at the counter and a server will bring your food to your table. The real attraction here is the space. The interior is a large, strong room with a high ceiling. Tables are comfortably spaced and there is a sitting area near a nice size fireplace. Outside there is a semi circular patio framed by wood and plants. Again, very relaxed and comfortable. On a Saturday night, there was live music performed by a talented guy with a guitar and banjo accompanied by his own rhythm tracks. We liked him enough to buy his CD. Overall, I like the coffee / beer / small plate restaurant theme and expect to see more of these soon. The business also rents mountain bikes.

Yelp
Can I say Yum...Yum...Yummmmm! If I didn't live so far away this would be my go to meeting place, coffee place, breakfast place, and just hangout place. It is not just a coffee shop, so from this review I hope you can get that when you come here you aren't just getting a non-Starbucks coffee shop, but you are also getting more than just a traditional small town coffee shop too! The coffee is yummy, I really liked the flavor, for me coffee is coffee in most places, but I actually got two cups, one for then sit down and one for the road! But........ Let me tell you the food was... fantastic! Most coffee shops have your typical sweet bread treats and your typical microwavable breakfast sandwich/burritos, BUT this place, yum! Homemade quality food that tastes amazing. We had missed breakfast, I was bummed, but wow the lunch options were incredible. What a culinary treat. I am going to be heading back to try breakfast because of it was half as good as the lunch the wow-ee! Quality food selection to, not just tasty, but the food heirloom potatos, succulent meats, well prepared and yummy in house sauces. If you come, don't just come because it's a coffee house, come and sit down to get some food!

Yelp
Great oat cortado. Nice spread and mix of tables. I'm a big fan of espresso places that have standing tables. Good homage to Italy.

Mason B.

Yelp
It sucks that this is the only local place I know of in ned. I've been here a handful of times, the first one I was doing work on my computer for about 20 minutes with the 2 drinks and food I ordered for my girlfriend and I still on the table and they asked us to leave when we were done eating... what?! Would've bought more if i worked longer but that felt too rude. Overheard them say the same thing to a lady that was still waiting on her coffee. Couldn't believe it. Decided to try again today and saw that they're no longer offering Wi-Fi to guests. A cafe... no Wi-Fi. Doesn't make much sense to me so instead of working and getting a couple drinks we got to go orders. Messed up my girlfriends and mine tastes like they ran up the street to pour it from the gas station. I'd say skip it but they've kinda cornered the market here so if you've stayed a night in ned you'll probably come here for a bad time
google avatar

Preston H.

Yelp
Super friendly staff and delicious coffee! They offer a variety of food and mountain supplies
google avatar

Matt G.

Yelp
Good vibe, nice outdoor set up and courteous service. I enjoyed the turnover and coffee (with free refill). Clean and neat... will enjoy it again soon.
google avatar

Mattie W.

Yelp
DO NOT COME HERE IF YOU'RE PLANNING TO WORK. I used to absolutely love coming here to work and enjoy the space. I live in Denver but frequently would drive up to work remotely in a welcoming mountain environment. Upon arriving from Denver today I am told they are not offering WiFi... I am told it's due to "lots of people camping out" and "slow mountain WiFi" seriously? Part of what I'm paying for at a coffee shop is the use of space and a network. To not even offer this to paying customers seems a bit ridiculous to me. Needless to say I will be taking my business elsewhere (and I'm sure many other people will too) - which is a bummer because I've loved this place for so long!
google avatar

Matt C.

Yelp
Very nice little coffee house in Ned. The roasts are good and the shop is very nice. Pastries and edibles are great for a coffee shop. Only downside is the cost of the coffee. $$$$
google avatar

Lora L.

Yelp
I've had many great coffees from roasters. I've had good coffee from roasters . I've had bad coffee too. Salto has a nice ambiance. But the worst coffee I've ever had. Bitter blech. My attached pic tells it all $7.00 in the trash
google avatar

Nick T.

Yelp
Wow! I tried an affogato (espresso o er a scoop of vanilla ice cream), it was amaze-balls! Great ambiance and a cozy fireplace. Do it
google avatar

Mannie S.

Yelp
Love the atmosphere and the space! The latte and the pozole I got was petty good. I would be back if I am in town, but not going to go out of the way for it. The tacos my husband got wasn't impressive according to him. The flavor was bland and the price is on the high side.
google avatar

Jud V.

Yelp
Was great when they opened years ago. It's tanked unfortunately. Good food and espresso. Drip coffee is rough. They refuse to cut sandwiches in half: "We can give you a knife" is the response... pushing the messy job onto the customer. That's just bad customer service. Overall poor attitude and energy behind the counter.
google avatar

Jo L.

Yelp
Nice coffee shop and Dog friendly. A little expensive. We had tea and sandwiches, tea was excellent- sandwiches were just okay.
google avatar

Yàtmá W.

Yelp
No fluff coffee shop located in downtown area. Be sure to back in for parking across the street though. While my coffee and sandwich were adequate, customer service left much to be desired. To the owner: Front counter staff, regardless of fatigue level or frustration, is the face, voice and welcome mat to customers who CHOOSE your coffee shop. Perhaps a refresher training is in order on how to provide quality, friendly support and guidance with customer questions. I didn't see the WiFi info posted on anything and with it posted there will be a decrease in this simple FAQ.
google avatar

Jenny T.

Yelp
We were camping in the area and this was our go to spot. Super huge space with cool artwork, delicious baked goods (chocolate zucchini bread... mmm), and unique drinks. Clean bathrooms. And of course, free Wifi. They source some of their goods from nearby shops. We stayed here late multiple days and they were so nice about not kicking us out. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Rosemarie B.

Yelp
The only negative thing about Salto is that their DELICIOUS egg, spinach, and bacon sandwich is only available until 11:30 am! One of the best breakfasts I can find when eating out. They have delicious and fresh juice to follow it. Great space to get work done if you need to, with a fantastic cozy spot near the fire. I love the rotating art on the walls that features local artists, and I can't wait to get in to see the live music every weekend!

Emily V.

Yelp
Great experience, good customer service, and very peaceful outdoor seating area. I had an iced lavender latte. Would say it was a little on the bitter side for a flavored latte, but it was good coffee!! Would definitely recommend!
google avatar

Not S.

Yelp
This place knows how to roast coffee, but that's where they hit their limit. Grinding coffee to go, making coffee, and customer service all left much to be desired. Stick to whole bean coffee or espresso based drinks
google avatar

Souzana V.

Yelp
My date took us up to Nedarland on Sunday. We stopped in this place to get a refreshing drink after a beautiful drive there. We each had a beer and relaxed in their sofa chairs. The place is very cute and has a nice casual ambiance. Am looking forward to coming back up here to try some stuff on their menu.
google avatar

Scott S.

Yelp
Should be called, 'Salty Coffee Works.' They make great coffee and the building has a nice atmosphere. However, they've messed up something on every food order that we've made. Every time they pushed back on making the correction with a snarky comment about us ordering incorrectly. Whether you think you were in the right or not (you simply weren't paying attention), it's just a taco... remake it with a smile and you keep a customer (I was polite to you after all). Fairly simple stuff in the service industry. This shop should only be making coffee. Their customer service and attitude are too poor to serve food, and from what I saw, it comes from the top (owner or manager). We won't be back again.
google avatar

Harriet B.

Yelp
Finally, a coffeeshop in Nederland for people who dont want to be in Nederland and wish they could have just stayed in Boulder... All jokes aside though, a damn good latte, and really appealing folks working there (although, *psst* I think they were the only thing local about the place!)
google avatar

Yelp
Cute cafe in the mountains. Wonderful views, amazing food, and they have a dog friendly outdoor patio! I definitely recommend the grain bowl for vegetarians!

Yelp
I was in here yesterday with my girlfriend and was honestly just really surprised at how salty the attitudes were of everyone who was working in the coffee shop while we were there. The sad part is I used to come here all the time with my family and we loved it. I hadn't been back since I moved out of Denver though so I was excited to bring my girlfriend here and I definitely hyped the place up to her...big mistake. First thing was that they have changed to not have any wifi for their customers anymore. When I go to coffee shops, part of what I'm paying for is the space and wifi. In 2021, when so many people are working more remotely now, I just expect there to be wifi especially with how expensive their coffee and food is here. So that was disappointment #1. More importantly though, everyone was just SUPER rude. The young girl at the counter was probably the nicest of anyone and she was getting yelled at openly in front of customers by the other women working there (one maybe in her 30s and one older). While we were standing at the counter, the woman with the high bun on top of her head kept telling the girl at the counter that she was marking things wrong and rolling her eyes but she never just took the time to correct her and move on. It felt like I was at some awkward family reunion where everyone was in a bad mood. Not professional or welcoming to customers. Naturally, one of our drinks did come out wrong. I liked the bfast egg sandwich I got, but my girlfriend got the bahn mi and it was gross. It had one grey, thin (like deli meat) piece of meat that they tried to pass off as pork belly which is usually juicy and delicious and not...greyish. What I was more surprised by was the comments and attitudes of the staff while we sat at the counter doing work on my hotspot. They'd get openly irritated when they had to call people's names mulitples times (mind you, it was super busy and loud so reasonable that someone might not hear their name the first time). One guy even gave up finding the customer and said "I'm done trying to track people down" and made the young girl who had been at the counter call the person's name again. We also watched them tell two people who were sitting at the outdoor counter that they had been there too long and needed to leave. This was weird because no one even came to sit at that counter after they left and the place started to clear out anyways. The woman with the bun on her head was definitely the most openly irritated. She kept rolling her eyes and saying things in a really sarcastic tone to customers. Just overall, a REALLY unwelcoming vibe. It felt like they were irritated they had customers. I don't know, but if I were them, I would just be happy that the weather is nice and COVID is getting better and people want to support my business. The coffee is also super acidic which I am not a fan of. I definitely won't be back considering I don't like to support places that make their customers feel like they're intruding or overstaying their welcome or just annoying the staff.
