Cleveland Clambakes Are a Can't-Miss Fall Tradition

"In Westlake on Friday nights throughout September and October, I found a cozy, unpretentious clambake scene run by owner Julie Novak, who says people start calling in August to reserve seats and once even had to alert social media that they’d run out. The clambake follows the Cleveland formula—chowder, clams, corn, potatoes, roasted half-chicken, and bread—and Novak emphasizes atmosphere as much as flavor: casual but still special (there’s even a chandelier made of oyster shells). She wanted a place where you don’t have to dress up to get good seafood, and the ritual feels comforting and communal, like fish fries or Browns games; my brother Dale even recommended trying a Bloody Mary with Clamato to taste “like the ocean.”" - Wendy Pramik

It's beautiful day to sit outside and enjoy the atmosphere, good vibes and delicious food. My server Heather was wonderful and helpful and so was the door greeter. My first time experiencing raw oysters and let me tell you they did not disappoint. I will definitely be back. Keep up the wonderful service and awesome food. Chef's kiss!

Google
Took my husband and Daddy out for Father's Day. It was all of our first time there and the food was delicious, atmosphere was comfortable and the SERVICE?!? ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! Our server was attentive knowledgeable and for having to take care the whole room, she made it look easy! We will definitely be back!!

My friend and I had an Early bird dinner last night and everything was Outstanding! I had been craving oysters for weeks and was pleasantly surprised to discover that they had six different varieties on offer!! Of course we got them all and they were delicious, and we also got dirty martinis and Alaskan snow crabs.., so we were pretty much in heaven. Everything was cooked perfectly. Our server was a sweetheart as well, but she did not tell us her name. Great place and we will be back super soon and often! definitely need to check out that happy hour as well. Thanks for a great time!

Adrian B.

Google
The oysters were amazing. And I also had the lobster pasta. Both were delicious. Will definitely come back again soon.

Google
Really great spot with a cozy vibe and solid service! Prices are reasonable for the quality, and the happy hour oysters are definitely worth stopping in for. The grilled and broiled oysters had great flavor—super fresh! The shrimp and grits were rich, creamy, and absolutely delicious. I also tried the French 75, and would classify as bright, crisp, and perfectly balanced. Overall, a really enjoyable place for good food and drinks. Will be back, and looking forward to making this part of my regular routine!

The owners personally contacted us and made it right. Its nice to see a business that can make an honest mistake, own it and make it right. If only all business were like this. A+ A group of us went during happy hour. Right on the wall it stated that during happy hour oysters were 3 for $5 and drafts were $5 I believe cant remember exactly. Food was great and our party had a great time until we got the bill. Everything was charged at full price dispite it clearly being during happy hour. When we questioned the bill we were informed that only 1 variety of oyster was 3 for $5 and that happy hour was at the bar only. We explained to the manager that no one explained either of those restrictions to us. Their reply was "Thats how its always been" I couldn't help but feel ripped off. My bill was 2x what I expected and the staff assume you know what oysters are 3 for $5 even tho its not written anywhere. Its a shame really because all 6 of us were talking before the bill came about how good Salty Mary's was and were already planning our next visit. But after being taken advantage of we all agreed we would never be returning.

Google
Subject: Disappointing Experience Due to Miscommunication and Misleading Information It’s unfortunate that what started as a great evening was completely ruined by a lack of proper communication and misleading information. A group of us visited Salty Mary’s specifically for the advertised happy hour special — 3 half-shelled oysters for $5 and $5 draft beers. We even called ahead to confirm that happy hour was available, and at no point were any restrictions mentioned regarding seating or oyster selection. When we arrived, we ordered oyster shooters and then a variety of oysters to sample. Our waitress described several types — both East and West Coast — and we placed our orders expecting to enjoy the happy hour specials. Everything was great until the bill arrived. We were charged full price for everything. When we questioned it, the waitress explained that happy hour pricing only applied at the bar — something that was never mentioned on the phone, on the sign, or by the waitress. When we asked to speak with a manager, she instead offered to bring the head chef, which was confusing since this was clearly a service-related issue. One member of our group eventually spoke with the bartender, who adjusted the beers to happy hour pricing but left the oysters at full price. When we asked about that, we were told that only the Chesapeake oysters were part of the special — again, something not indicated anywhere. His only explanation was that “it’s always been that way,” but as first-time customers, there’s no way we could have known that. Up until receiving the bill, we had been discussing making this a regular monthly spot and even bringing our families. Unfortunately, due to this poor experience and lack of clear communication, we’ve decided we won’t be returning. Ken C

Google
The bartenders were great! Great service! The calamari was chewy like leather (over cooked). My Caesar Salad came out after my calamari, I asked for it because I thought they had forgotten it. I love Caesar salads especially for the romaine hearts which this salad lacked. It contained lots of the green leaf and was over dressed. I did not finish either dish.

Yelp
solid 4.5 good food and really cool decor. it's a bit noisy but the service is great too. would definitely go back

Yelp
A group of us went here for Sunday brunch and a book club discussion! I have to say that everyone from the girl I spoke with on the phone, to the hostess to our server were sooooo extremely kind and helpful. Some of us did the brunch menu and some did lunch- all did not disappoint! I ordered the New England clam chowder which was delicious and the wedge salad. That was big and very tasty. They have a great seafood menu and it's decorated really cute inside. I did not order but they had a honey bread on the menu that I saw on another diner's table and it looked delicious! I really enjoyed my dining experience here and really want to try for dinner. It's hard finding good seafood items in the Midwest, but this place is a "catch" ;) Oh, one more thing- the shrimp tacos looked amazing and one of my friends ordered them and said she could have eaten 6- they were that yummy! You get 3 in an order, I believe! Check out Salty Mary's! We will be back!

Yelp
Always great food and service. A taste of New Orleans etc. Friendly and efficient staff. Charming ambience. Cozy. Bar seating is fun. Open kitchen.
google avatar

Jeffery G.

Yelp
Really good seafood. Nice staff, nice place. We will be back. By the way, the oysters were good, probably the best thing on the menu.

Kevin S.

Yelp
Server Heather was great... Started with half dozen oysters... Cioppino was outstanding... Disappointed that they had to remove the lobster from the menu and the lobster mac 'n cheese due to inflated prices but the grouper mac 'n cheese filled in nicely...

Yelp
The deviled eggs - as others have said - SO GOOD! Clam Chowder - AMAZING Our server/bartender (bc we had to sit at the bar) was amazing !! (Bree) This is in an old Friendlys restaurant BUT the ambiance is nice. They do have a few tvs and will put on whatever game you want
google avatar

Lori Lynn C.

Yelp
Enjoy apps and cocktails with friends for happy hour and both didn't disappoint! They also had cute little patio.
google avatar

Yelp
Came for an early NYE dinner. The service was friendly & efficient. We started with calamari & split a chop salad which is huge! I was hoping for king crab, but they serve snow, so I decided on a blackened walleye sandwich with cheddar grits in place of fries. It was very tasty. My son ordered the lobster roll and really liked it. We ended our meal with a cherry vanilla bourbon bread pudding and it too was delicious. I love this place! Nice little seafood house close to home! Forgot to snap a pic of dessert :(
google avatar

Sherine N.

Yelp
It's been a while. This is one of my favorite spots for oysters. New oyster variety every time I visit this gem! The Freshest oysters on the west side hands down. Carlos is still killing it in the kitchen. Lydia the bartender was fast and friendly, great service every visit.

Yelp
This was a very nice stop along our journey out of Ohio. Nice quality seafood (oysters and shrimp). Definitely a solid dining experience.

Yelp
Tonight I had little time but a craving for some calamari and a fish sandwich. I've been meaning to stop in for awhile but decided to call in an order since I had plans later. Thank god I called in the order and I'll be eating inside soon Their calamari was great but the blackened walleye sandwich HIT THE SPOT! And did I mention this was take out?! The bun on the sandwich was perfect and I loved every peppery bite! The walleye was perfect and their thin cut fries complimented the entire meal ... nothing was left. And now when I have a little extra time, I'll be planning when I can head inside for a meal. Thanks Salty Mary's and see ya soon
google avatar

Franki H.

Yelp
A nice place for Sunday brunch... great seafood and non seafood options! Service was very good, but the restaurant was pretty empty while we were there. The blackened walleye was a decent portion and well seasoned. The wedge salad was dressed well with lots of toppings. The fried chicken sandwich had like a fried fish breading/corn meal breading-- it was a unique take and I enjoyed it.

Yelp
Great V-Day meal with spouse at Salty Mary's in Westlake. 25 valentine's in the books. Holy cats. We had tropical shrimp ceviche, lobster roll, Blistered Shishito peppers, bloody-mary deviled-eggs, bourbon vanilla bean cherry bread pudding and a black cherry old-fashioned for her. Yum. Will return for the 8 other things on the menu we want to try. BTW : the building is an old Friendly's Ice Cream place. Great remodel and re-purposed space.

Yelp
My first time here, not terribly busy at 8pm on Saturday. Food was amazing and fresh. Service from our waitress was good but kitchen and bar was slow for being slow. Lobster roll and oysters were awesome. We had the trout dip and crostini appetizer. A bit pricey but delicious and tasty.

Yelp
Have wanted to come to this establishment for some time, finally did it. I did not take pics of all the food, but our group also got the cod sandwich, blackened walleye sandwich, some grilled oysters and Nawlins shrimo. All the food was very delicious, was very impressed. Our server was very friendly and overall great. Great vibe inside, I bet it's a great place to hang out in the summer. Can't wait to go back and try different items.
google avatar

Yelp
Our party was 11. Service was great and food was excellent! Thanks Joyce for the great service.
google avatar

Marjorie C.

Yelp
Our server was very personable and the food was excellent. It's a sports bar so it was noisy, and very dark, but that's ok. People were laughing and having a good time. I was disappointed when I asked about the all you can eat oyster special and was told they were "running out" of them, but we were happy with our second choices.
google avatar

Ken B.

Yelp
Stumbled upon Mary's and was delighted with the food and service (joyce). We at at the bar and had oysters and chowder and drinks. It was great. The menu looks really good and cant wait to get back to have a full meal. Thanks KenB

Yelp
I was no where near being salty after leaving here! We came here after a recommendation and were really impressed! The menu has a lot of delicious items that don't break the bank and good quality! We started with the edamame, which was soooo yum. Also got the cornbread which was sweet and delicious it could've been a dessert. The honey butter on it is to die for. The oysters also were great. For entrees I go the Po Boy and love how it was just ever so slightly fried. Great casual atmosphere and great food!! Definitely sending the recommendation along!
google avatar

Kathleen J.

Yelp
Don't be fooled by this lovely Lobster roll. What we got yesterday looked like calamari tentacles on a bun. Nothing else. It was rubbery and tasteless. It was a 6" long and the aioli sauce and lemon wedge was the only flavor. The bar tender was nice and attentive. Great service but the prices are too high for what you get! Disappointed for first and last time customer!

Yelp
This was our 3rd visit to Salty Mary's. It is turning out to be one of our favorites. Last night most of the servers all looked to be in their very young 20's. They could not have been more courteous! We started with 6 oysters on the half shell. Extremely fresh and bright. Only suggestion is to add horseradish to the condiments on plate. My husband stuck with his favorite BBQ Shrimp on Grits. He absolutely loved it! I chose the New England Cod Sandwich with Flat Fries. Both were excellent. Fish was nicely breaded without being heavy. I love the flat fries. I highly recommend Salty Mary's! Their food and service never miss!
google avatar

Jeffrey R.

Yelp
The food was cooked to perfection and our waitress was very good and knew the menu well! The fireplace was burning with a delightful atmosphere of wood burning in the background. People laughing and talking. What a great place to have a meal.

Yelp
This place has been on my list of places to try and it was beyond what I expected. We went on a Wednesday night and was pleasantly surprised there was no wait and it was not too busy. We started with the smoked trout dip, it was creamy and had the perfect hint of smoke. We had to take some home and ran out of the crostini and our server was so sweet and without us asking got us some more to take home. I had the lobster roll which was full of lobster and the bun was toasty and buttery. My husband had the shrimp po boy. Both were delicious, but the star were the fries. Most places under season their fries and these were seasoned so well, they were crispy and we couldn't eat them fast enough. With such great meals we went for the seasonal cobbler dessert which again was so good. Overall we will absolutely be back.

Yelp
Sometimes you just need oysters in November in Ohio. The space and ambiance leaves a bit to be desired. But anything they are lacking in interior design, they definitely make up for in flavor! I had the happy hour oysters ($5 for 3) and they were great. Large, plump and tasty! The oysters for the day were all from Virginia, and while I generally prefer the smaller West coast ones, it's hard to be that picky in Ohio. I also had the clam chowder and classic shrimp scampi - both excellent and I would order again!
google avatar

Bella B.

Yelp
Love seafood? Looking for a charming neighborhood joint that is not pretentious or too upscale? This establishment is absolutely fabulous. Delightful food, service & big smiles!! Excellent happy hour! Oysters are fantastic. Clam chowder damn near had me cryin'!! Delicious!
google avatar

Heather F.

Yelp
Excellent menu and quality food. Loved the deviled eggs and trout dip. The oysters were great too.

Natasha C.

Yelp
We had our dog so we sat on the patio. As soon as we sat down, the staff grabbed all the lanterns off the tables. The light in the parking lot kept going on and off so we would try to eat really fast when we could see our food. We ordered drinks and when they were brought out, the server said "whoops we forgot to put salt on the rim of your margarita. And then left. That's a pretty easy fix, but it wasn't offered. The staff offered to bring our dog water but never did. I had to bring the plates inside bc we hadn't seen our server in a while and wanted to leave. The Ciopino was served without bread or spoon and it was just seafood in unseasoned tomato puree. The staff was pleasant, but the management is clearly lacking in staff training.

Yelp
OH SHUCK YEAH! Woooohoooo open for business is the fancy, shiny & new salty Mary's! Beautiful interior and nice porch to sit & sip. I've been a few times already bc they are my BFF's & here is what I've tried. First night the big wedge which is an entree in itself. Loaded with bacon which is never a bad thing, and bleu crumbles. Nice plates too! I had the old bay shrimp entree it's the best I've had around here or anywhere. Big firm beautiful shrimp & the zippy horseradish cocktail sauce. Man I love a good shrimp cocktail & this is the tops. Blue point oysters next day for lunch. Beautiful & fresh off the half shell. Again the wonderful cocktail sauce that I like to add, and a vinegar based sauce too that was very good. Clam chowder also that day & it's great. Next trip we had the Phil collins drinkees at the bar. A Tom collins with purple stuff I could look up the ingredients but what fun is that. Nice list of specialty cocktails & a fine wine selection too. Fancy! That night the piping hot chicken reggiano, when max asked me how it was I couldn't contain myself THIS IS F GREAT!! I love a good pan fried chicken breast & this one is times 2! Man it was great & the creamed spinach comes with I smashed it. Shrimp scampi app next day for lunch, great big shrimp wonderful garlic base. I kept dunking the bread in there. Very filling. Such a good baguette I wonder where they get it. What else. Oh yes the deviled eggs, so good. Best I've had around here & I've been so routinely disappointed by other establishments eggs. These have a celery salt on them that is so good I cried. Nice & firm. Large. Little pickle & celery accoutrement. Great! So I still want to try more oysters, then the fried & broiled to see the differences. Such a large menu I've got a ways to go. The hanger steak. Fish & chips. Arctic char. Etc etc. see u there 5 stars easy.

Yelp
YUM! It really is that simple. Friday Night Dinner just went up a notch thanks to Salty Mary's. We have seen the reviews and knew we had to get there before it became to hard to get a table. Party of 3, Friday night dinner and dessert, it was perfect. The buildout at Salty Mary's is clean, modern and spacious, with a great long bar and open kitchen. The warmer weather lends to a side patio with plenty of room. The dining area is a mix of low tops and family tables, so being the party and order from the menu, it's so fresh. We started out with quite a mix of appetizers and soup, with a few entrees ordered for sharing and well a little too much dessert, but we ate it all! The starter menu is hearty enough to order a mix for the table, especially when you get a mix of oysters. Everything was full of flavor and FRESH. I just wish I would have remembered to take a picture of everything along the way. The clam chowder was hearty and full of flavor...so said my mother and husband...it was chocked full of bacon so I had to pass, that only meant my mother got a bowl to take home. The tuna was fresh dnd light, the guacamole was delicious. We ordered 3 sets of oysters and they were perfect...the brine s c hot sauce mix was truly fire. Next up, we had the clams and fish tacos, both full of fresh flavor, toasty bread and perfectly steamed. We were getting full but there was still plenty to eat, the oyster po boy had the perfect bun, spicy Mayo and not yo heavy a dredge, the oysters were huge...only thing kidding were pickles. Did I mention the fries, think cut steak fries, I could not stop eating them. We managed to save room for dessert and we were not disappointed. The cinnamon Bundt cakes were moist and delicious, the cherry bourbon bread pudding was epic...so fresh and perfectly baked, last the seasonal berry cobbler with vanilla ice cream was hit, fresh, perfect crumble and well, I literally licked the dish. The space is inviting, but a little loud if you are looking for more of a quiet space. The staff is full of knowledge and if you are feeling feisty you can order a round for the shucking staff...you know you want them to ring the bell. I look forward to them getting a Sunday liquor license, brunch is just what they need.

Joe J.

Yelp
I've been here several times, both personally and professionally. One thing I really enjoy here is the service, the staff is very attentive and willing to go the extra mile on the menu items to customize with your preferences. For an intimate setting, it can be a little loud, but really enjoy with a group.

Yelp
I'm picky about food prep, and this restaurant's food just tastes dead to me. The service & our waiter were awesome. I hope to not return.
google avatar

Jeff G.

Yelp
The service was on point. Friendly and polite. The food was awesome. Had a Shrimp PoBoy and it was like New Orleans. Ambiance was very comfy and well decorated, very nice. We will be back! Thank you guys.

J L.

Yelp
Fantastic bloody Mary's and seafood! Service very friendly. Need some shades on the windows, though. Will be back!!!
google avatar

Yelp
My wife, 1 year old and myself went to Salty Mary's for dinner. They seated us at the high tops which worked out fine since they have high top high chairs. The service was very friendly and quick. We also loved the food. We got the hush puppy bread, shrimp tacos and fish and chips. Everything was delicious and the portions were great. They also had fish and chips as a kids meal which our son loved. Would definitely recommend this place in the area.
google avatar

Ann S.

Yelp
I popped in because I was craving oysters. Boy, they didn't disappoint. It happened to be happy hour too. 2 glasses of wine and 1 dozen oysters with 20% tip 37.98. Excellent value but I would've paid double. Oysters were shucked perfectly fresh and succulent. Crisp refreshing pinot grigo. I sat at the bar service was excellent decor has a coastal vibe. There is outdoor sitting. All in all if u love oysters visit here.
google avatar

Eileen N.

Yelp
The parking lot was full on Fri so I was excited that We would have some good seafood. We had the walleye sandwich and fries. and clam chowder. The clam chowder was very flavorful. I think it had bacon in it! That was the best thing I ate. Very disappointed in the walleye. It was very small sandwich. I never had it when it was not breaded. The fries tasted like potato chips. They were sliced very thin and salty. I would not get again. The order was to go so zi don't know anything about the restaurant.
google avatar

Lila P.

Yelp
They opened up their sewer system during dinner! It smelled foul so who even cares what the food tasted like! I will never return. Terrible management. Unless you want to eat shit for dinner do not eat there!
google avatar

Christina P.

Yelp
I love seafood so of course this place was on my list. I got it to go and it wasn't bad. I ordered the Steamed P.E.I. Mussels and the Oyster Po Boy. The mussels were tasty and I like it more than the Po Boy. The Po Boy tasted mostly bready an didn't taste of much else. I will say I was quite confused where to pick up my food. If you're eating in you supposed to seat yourself but I saw no instructions of where to pick up. I ended up going to the bar after standing around a bit trying to figure it out. Overall not bad but not my favorite.
google avatar

Nina N.

Yelp
The food is very subpar for the prices. They might not be selling enough food fast enough because the shrimp was fishy and not good. Service was amazing ! Food not so good. Ambiance is nice also.

Lisa M.

Yelp
Fish and chips was good, but crabs legs were so bendy and flaky that they were difficult to eat without a LOT of effort. Service was delightful, but the place is EXTREMELY loud. It is almost impossible to hear someone directly across from you unless they are shouting. The few "egg crate" sound buffers on the ceiling are worthless. The owners should spend the money to have a sound engineer fix this issue.

Kay M.

Yelp
We had high expectations because of the good reviews, but we were disappointed. We went midday, it was very quiet, only one other table occupied. We ordered two appetizers, a salad, and fish and chips. We waited quite a while but we weren't in a hurry. The server brought all the food at once, not just the appetizers, strange, and food got cold before we could get to everything. The clam strips were so over fried and hard you couldn't tell if there were actually clams in them. I regret not sending them back. The salad was arugula with dried cherries, cheese, and nuts- there were zero cherries. At least the fish was well done, it was very good, but the "chips" were strips of potato also so over fried and hard, we didn't eat them. I had to get up and look for the server twice to get more water and the bill. Definitely not worth the price. If this is what the quality and service is like while almost empty, we won't be going back.
google avatar

Nina C.

Yelp
5/5 for Service 4/5 for food - I wish it would let me give 4.5 stars For appetizers we got the Calamari with shishito pepper which was a very generous serving and very good! The cajun sauce that came with it was very good but I think squeezing the lemon over the calamari was enough since it tasted very good on it's own. For the entree I got the linguine and clams which is a good portion size and the clams were well cooked. The sauce itself had a little too much white wine for my taste and I wish there was a bit more parmesan or creaminess. It seems that the kitchen has been experimenting with the recipes so I'm interested to see how this restaurant evolves. Sara T was our server and she was great! She was very attentive and the food came out very quickly. Other items I would like to try: Bay seasoning edamame, mussels, the deep dish cookie dessert, the clam bake and the crab legs that they will be serving every Monday in October!
google avatar

Maricar G.

Yelp
Yassss it's like the Blue point grill of the west side! Just opened August 2022 and off to a great start. Fresh oysters and excellent service. Clam chowder was hearty and perfect for those cool fall days. Walleye sandwich was a winner for me
google avatar

Travis G.

Yelp
What a terrible experience. Tried to get the all you can eat oysters and only ended up with a dozen because it took 1/2 hour to get the first dozen and waited another 30 minutes and never got the 2nd dozen. Sadly they didn't even try to make it right. Also 30 for the smallest crabcakes I've ever seen. So disappointed
google avatar

Jill R.

Yelp
What a great place to open up in Westlake! The staff was so nice & accommodating when we sat at the bar. I've been telling people it's the best happy hour in town. They have $7 bites that will fill you up & great drink specials. Can't say enough great words about Salty Mary's!

Chuck Z.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere waitress was nice Menu is unique They didn't have mixing for Negronis

Yelp
30 people attended a holiday party at Salty Mary's. They provided our group with adequate space within the main dining area where we could comfortably sit, eat and visit. Wait staff did an excellent job of serving us as checks were separate and orders were handled correctly with easy running tabs and close out. Food was wonderful. Fresh oyster bar was just that- fresh and tasty. Entree and sandwich items offered included seafood choices along with beef and chicken options. We all had a wonderful time and liked the venue.

Yelp
I was in Cleveland for work a while back and wanted something nice to take to the beach for a picnic, and I ended up placing an online pickup order for the clams and linguini dish from Salty Mary's. When I got there, I had to wait 5-10 min longer than expected, which I didn't mind, but they still made it up to me, and went above and beyond with their customer service. The food was good, and it was a nice experience.

Yelp
Nice restaurant with great ambiance. Menu is rich with seafood. Husband loved the clam chowder. Abby was friendly.
