Salut Maroc, Essaouira, Morocco - Explore & Book

"In my time reviewing hotels I've often come across 'years of painstaking renovation', 'wonderful craftsmanship' and the 'unique design details' deployed in the creation of a 'vibrant work of art' by a 'visionary owner'. And then I stayed at Salut Maroc!. British designer Helen Howat, passionate about Arabian design and Moroccan architecture (she worked in the Middle East for years), acquired an 18th-century riad - formerly a Jewish merchant house then a consulate - and spent 5 years on its ambitious transformation. Her contemporary reinvention of traditional crafts meant incorporating Islamic patterns, stunning vintage pieces, clashing yet sumptuous upholstery and dazzlingly intricate tilework. The ground floor has a bespoke 54-panel wall-hanging beside mid-century modern furniture and a sunken library in shades of flame. Ascend the staircase - each riser painted differently - to 2 blue floors housing a hammam and 10 fabulous rooms inspired by Moroccan cities. At the top is the romantic rooftop dining terrace with magnificent ocean views. Artwork ranges from note-perfect kitsch paintings to Berber wall art. And, this isn't just a design showcase, it all actually works! Rooms are supremely comfortable and calming, there's plentiful hot water for the signature copper bathtubs, the food is delicious, and the ambiance is delightful. Highs Great location in Essaouira's Unesco-listed medina overlooking the Skala du Port (bastion) and the Atlantic Breathtaking and unique restoration, everything fashioned to a very high standard; interior design buffs will be in heaven Lovely helpful staff Extraordinarily beautiful bedrooms and bathrooms, each individually decorated; good value for the high quality Wonderful rooftop restaurant and bar with live music and fabulous ocean views A vibrant and fun hangout for cool couples, but very welcoming to families, too Lows Most rooms are fairly compact; don't expect much by way of wardrobes or floor space for luggage Bathrooms don't have showers, only big copper bathtubs with handheld shower heads Steep winding stairs up to the roof terrace; there's no lift (to be expected in an old riad) Fairly loud music is played throughout the hotel well into the evening, so bring earplugs if you intend to retire early" - Nadine Mellor

Stunning design, location and rooftop but less comfort, quality & value for money than others here Liked · The location is amazing right in the heart of the medina and next to the ramparts adjacent to the ocean. The roof top terrace was stunning, the service was always very good and friendly and the breakfast was very delicious. The hammam at the hotel was a nice, authentic experience and recommended. The riad style building and room design is beautiful and very Instagramable! Our host/guest relations Mina was wonderful. Super friendly and kind, super attentive, helpful and efficient and helped us with everything we needed - there was nothing that was too much trouble! Disliked · We had the family room which was stunning but it isn't 49m2 as described on Booking.com but more like 30m2. It wasn't the most comfortable or convenient/practical family room we had in Essaouira but appreciate that style probably trumps comfort is this type of design-led conversion! We had a disappointing meal in the rooftop restaurant sending all the hot dishes back as it was cold and undercooked (as did the table sitting next to us) to be re-heated/cooked so that rather spoiled the otherwise nice evening of dramatic sunset and great live music! It was very busy and felt like the kitchen was perhaps overwhelmed or struggling to cope to produce everything to standard. Felt that quality was sacrificed for view / style!

From the moment we arrived, our experience at Salut Maroc was nothing short of exceptional. The staff welcomed us warmly, check-in was seamless, and the attention to detail throughout the property instantly set the tone for a luxurious stay. The room was beautifully designed—spotlessly clean, spacious, and well-equipped. The bed was incredibly comfortable, and the view from our window was breathtaking. Every aspect of the hotel felt thoughtfully curated to enhance guest comfort. What truly elevated our stay, however, was the food. Every meal we had was a culinary delight. The breakfast offered a wide selection, and dinner was equally impressive beautifully plated, flavorful, and crafted with fresh, local ingredients. Whether it was the rich aroma of the coffee or the perfectly grilled seafood, every bite felt like it had a story. Service throughout the hotel and restaurant was outstanding—professional, friendly, and genuinely hospitable. The staff remembered our preferences and went above and beyond to ensure we were comfortable and satisfied. We left feeling relaxed, pampered, and already planning our return. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a perfect blend of comfort, service, and unforgettable dining. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5)

We visited this restaurant hoping to enjoy a coffee with a sea view, but were met with disappointing treatment. Staff informed us that the scenic tables were reserved exclusively for those ordering food, while guests wanting only drinks were confined to a cramped area. The inconsistency was glaring—others were seated comfortably with drinks alone. The lack of courtesy and fairness was striking. Not recommended.

A unique boutique riad in the heart of the old town. An absolutely stunning room which was a work of art. Everything about the room was of the highest quality and the attention to detail was amazing. Our room overlooked the ramparts . Wonderful views of the Atlantic. At night we slept to the sound of the waves. We have never stayed anywhere quite like it. The room was immaculately clean and all the staff were very friendly and helpful. Would definitely stay here again.

We came for a sunset dinner and it was lovely. It was chilly evening but the blankets on every chair made it comfortable. Between us we had the paella and tagine - both were delicious and the staff were friendly and attentive. We really enjoyed the live music too, it was just a shame that the other guests didn’t pay much them attention.

On our visit there was a power cut within the town which then limited the food we could have but they didn’t let it affect anyone. Torches out, limited menu arranged and the food and vibes were immaculate. Highly recommend this special find (especially for sunset)! Food was amazing. Team and live band were just amazing people who kept the vibes high. Highly highly recommend.

Although a spectacular location with views West across the Atlantic at sunset, this was the least welcome I have felt in the 2 weeks I have spent in Maroc. We had a dinner reservation. On arrival, we were greeted at the bar, but were told to go up to the top terrace. There was no one there to seat us and we waited for 5 minutes to finally flag someone down to find our table. We wanted to order a drink first before deciding on dinner, but were told that wasn't possible and we had to order all at once. The first choices for our cocktails were given a curt "no" by our very disinterested waiter without explanation. On further questioning it was revealed that they had no fresh mint. (We saw barrow loads in the market). Our meals arrived quickly and it became apparent that this was going to be an express dining experience. We weren't offered water. My wife asked for a blanket and waited while others received blankets until it was finally her turn. Our plates were cleared and no further service was forthcoming. No offer of another drink or dessert menus. We noticed that other tables had received olives and bread but we did not. The prices were as expensive as top notch Marrakech restaurants, but the food was not as good. The maitre'd wasn't particularly interested when we paid the bill and expressed our dissatisfaction. Don't waste your money here.

The whole place is beautiful, the colours, the tiles and every little detail. The view from the terrace was amazing! The sunset, the live music 👌 the cocktails were lovely and worthwhile. Unfortunately, the food fell short, the tagine was disappointingly cold!! It was some steamed veggies on tomato sauce, if you are a vegetarian/vegan do yourself a favour and eat somewhere else and then come just for drinks!
