Where to Eat in Wellington, New Zealand

"A central-city pie shop with a constantly changing roster of specials; the standout is a bold beef brisket pie layered with cheese, streaky bacon, and jalapeño relish." - Alexandra Carlton

Possibly Wellington’s best pies — and the coffee’s great too. I’ve been twice and both times the pies have been brilliant: big, hearty, and packed with flavour. The Chinese BBQ pulled pork is a standout. Great range of flavours, friendly staff, and seriously good coffee make this a must-visit.

I was reserving 5 stars for the best pies I could find as I travelled around New Zealand tasting pies at highly recommended pie places. These pies are absolutely outstanding, and hands down the best pies I have found. I love the size and shape of the pies, which look both gourmet, but also lovingly homemade. The pastry is cooked to perfection, and there is an amazing range of original flavours. I tried the teriyaki pork belly, the meat was cooked perfect, the gravy/sauce was flavourful and not too salty. My son had a classic mince and cheese pie and it also looked amazing and he said it was “loaded” and the best mince and cheese pie he’s ever had. The cafe itself is lovely and open where you can eat in if you want. What I love about this place is that they’ve kept it simple. They do pies, and they do pies extremely well. It is a true pie shop through and through. I would love to see a place like this become a franchise so long as it stayed true to the amazingly well done pies. We’ll definitely be back.

Our Pie club ventured to Salut after a recommendation. I'd say more about that, but we don't talk about pie club. Salut pies blew us away. I tried the brisket with jalepeno and bacon relish pie, which was fantastic and very good value at $11. Would happily have paid more as ot was packed with brisket. There wasn't a really strong jalepeno flavour, but a very small complaint for what was an excellent feed. Staff were friendly, and it was a nice place to sit and eat. The line was out the door but moved quickly. Definitely recommend. Friends had the teriyaki pork belly and loved it. I'll try that next.

Had a few pies from here. They’ve been decent, no complaints from me. The coffees and matchas here are crap though. They use a lot of syrup for the flavour and it’s far too sweet. Matcha is chunky. Embarrassing to even sell it lol. If you get anything iced, they will put a HUGE chunk of ice in it so you’re left with only 100ml of actual liquid. The staff are rude. Overall nothing spectacular but worth trying the pies if you’re passing by and don’t mind a little stink attitude. You’ll be spoilt for choice if you’re in early enough!

Black diamond (beef brisket) is the best pie I’ve had in Wellington. Costs a few bucks more than their other pies and is well worth it. Several of their other pies also merit five stars. Neither coffee nor hot chocolate is to my taste but that’s not what I’m here for.

I’ve been eating pies religiously for many years around the country. Already been twice since I found it and this would have to be my favourite place in NZ for pies so far. Thanks to the lovely staff and owners for helping us organise our babies formula bottle and serving up a real pie 10/10. I’ll be back with backup to devour some more!

Love the gochujang chicken pie. Creative and good. Lots of filling as well. Worth it. Min $11 for big pie. Mini is $4
