Of all the cathedrals in the world one visits during a lifetime (if one loves this sort of explorative tourism), the memory of the Salzburg cathedral stays for a very long time. The question is why? Is it the impressive structure, the high colourful painted dome, the magnificent organ, the serene alcoves, the amazing views wherever one stands in the building, the light pouring into it, the exquisite art work, the amount of precious metals and stones and marbles on display, or is it something more spiritual, more untouchable, fleeting yet eternally grounded? It’s where the perfect meeting between our Maker and his creation - the humanity, can be sensed. The feeling left in the visitor is a sense of awe, peace, gratitude and marvel. I would recommend to place the Salzburg cathedral at the top of one’s “Must Visit” list. Together with a visit to the whole town, really, the old part of it, the ancient streets, the stylish little boutiques, the charming tunnels under the buildings leading to even more charming inner yards and spaces, the houses where Mozart grew and played, where Karajan lived and conducted, the streets and buildings full of history, music and solemn beauty.
