"Sam: Johnson’s Book Shop, Mar Vista. Sam: Johnson's is a quaint shop filled with curated classic books. The founders say they wanted to create "a place of culture and wondrous surprise" for all. The shop smells like it should (old paper), and offers visual delights hidden throughout the shelves. Come in and browse all the while pretending that you might run into Slimer in the basement (there's no basement)."

If you love books you should come here. Owners are super nice and will talk with you about anything and everything. True gem! Love this place !!!

My experience here was just ok. They had an ok selection of books, used and new. Staff was friendly and available if needed. However, a lot of the books for purchase outside were dirty or slightly water damaged, which for the price was not really worth it. Also, the bookstore itself didn't feel very welcoming (small, tight aisles, not much seating, felt a bit disorganized). As far as bookstores go, this place isn't really my style, though it's worth noting how beloved it is by readers.

Carefully curated selection and knowledgeable staff, but VERY pricey for used books. For example, an "okay condition" 20 year-old paperback that released new at say $15, you'll find here for $13. It's a nice place to browse at least.

I'm surprised there aren't more 5 star reviews! This shop has never disappointed, whether I'm looking for a gift or browsing for myself. I love that it's quaint and has a diverse selection. Give yourself some time to look around.

Nice nostalgic bookstore. I had fun browsing but they carry mostly hardcovers and I literally paid $12 for a book that was originally $10...many moons ago. So more like a “support your local bookstore” kind of thing.

Man, finding this bookstore was like coming home. The caretakers were great at giving me recommendations based on what I had read, both popular mainstays and deep cuts. I'll always want to go to Mysterious and drop a couple hours and dollars on their selection.

My favorite book shop. Just ask David what you're looking for and he'll gladly point you in the perfect direction. Do not hesitate to ask questions. Everyone who works here is a wealth of knowledge.

This is one of mar vistas hidden jewels and I urge all in area to visit this book store. Sam is" part of the furniture" here and we hope to have him another 30 or 40 years....
