My favourite way of seeing contemporary art! If you know you'll be in Berlin on a Saturday, book ahead (you need to) and go. A true art lover opens her home to share her passion and guide you through it. The setting is intimate and encourages reflection. Ever wondered what great art would feel like outside of a museum or gallery? Here's your chance to find out,

The private collection of the Hoffman family is shown in their apartment on the 3rd and 4th floor in the Sophie Gipshofe. their collection encourages thinking about the German and Berlin history, the current Western society and international issues. Every year in September, the exhibition will change and on Saturday, madam Hoffman is often there to meet the guests who are admiring her collections.

Yelp
We found this place in the Lonely planet book for Berlin, but that should be no reason to hold you back from going here. If you like contemporary art, are curious about it, or just want your sensibilities about art challenged, I suggest you go here. Not everyone is a fan of contemporary art, but challenge yourself sometime and go. Plus, the idea that it is a private collection, housed in the owners home and you get a peak inside? What is not to love about that? Plus the building itself is amazing and has an interesting story, much like many buildings in Berlin. You need to make an appointment to view the collection. It is only open on Saturday afternoons, so be sure to go to their web page and set up an appointment. It is also closed in August when they change the items on display. You can learn more about the collection and the owners on their web page so I won't bore you here. But I found it very useful that I had gone to the Hamburger Bahnhof museum of contemporary art before coming here. An excellent museum in it own right, there are some arts in common so it was kind of fun to see some pieces by names I recognized. The hof where you find the collection also has a great cafe and there is a book store, not affiliated with the collection which are great places to spend some time while you wait for your appointment to see the collection.
