I have been a Texas Master Naturalist for about six years now. As a result of my interest in nature and being stuck in my backyard with a camera during the pandemic, I developed a passion for taking photos of birds, plants, and insects.
My wife and I visited the San Antonio Botanical Gardens earlier this year. I loved the opportunity to take pictures of so many different living things. She decided to get me a membership for my birthday so I could head over there whenever I wanted and take pictures to my heart's content.
I went on Wednesday for my first run. I was there for over two hours. It was long enough for me to take 224 photos, 71 which I considered keepers and posted to my blog site.
The gardens are amazing. They are very well laid out, and every turn leads you to something more beautiful to look at. On this particular day, it was not terribly crowded. I know that can change at different times of the year. However, one of the bonuses of a
membership is getting to go in before the general public.
I was enthralled by the sounds of the place. There was a blend of happy children, trees blowing in the wind, and leaf blowers. It was so soothing.
I was shocked by the amount of butterflies that were everywhere in the gardens. I saw at least 100 monarchs and thousands of others. On top of that, there were bees all over the place. No matter where I looked there was something to take a picture of.
All of the workers I encountered were super friendly. I am glad they were there, as I neglected to pick up a map and had a hard time finding my way out. That won't happen now that my plan is to go once a week, weather permitting.
I will say that I found the Christmas lighting equipment distracting. It may be beautiful when lit up at night. In the daytime just laying around- not so much. But, I understand the value both in sales of tickets and public outreach. I can shoot around them for the short time they are there.
I highly recommend the gardens for any amateur photographer. If you like to photograph bees and butterflies, it is the perfect place to practice your skills. The flowers are also great for practice. There are so many different areas of the gardens both indoor and outdoor that you can really work on whatever you need to.
