The Best Hotels in the World: 2023 Readers’ Choice Awards

"You arrive to San Clemente the way you wish to—but don't always—arrive everywhere in Venice: by boat. The hotel is on its own island, and the site of the old buildings (a former hospital-turned-hotel) as you approach feels glamorous. Bonus: The private island feels immediately calm compared to the crush of central Venice where you catch the boat. This is a true resort: You could spend five days here and never leave. There are six restaurants and bars altogether, from poolside lunch spots to terraces serving afternoon spritzes (an absolute must, regardless of price tag). Food is decent Italian—you won't eat badly at all. For families it's perfect because the kids can actually run around." - CNT Editors

San Clemente Palace Kempinski Venice

"How did it strike you on arrival? You arrive to San Clemente the way you wish to—but don't always—arrive everywhere in Venice: by boat. The hotel is on its own island, and the site of the old buildings (a former hospital-turned-hotel) as you approach feels glamorous. Bonus: The private island feels immediately calm compared to the crush of central Venice where you catch the boat. Nice. What’s the crowd like?Sophisticated Americans, British and French. Well-dressed, generally well-traveled. Picture ladies in loose Missoni and gentlemen in jackets mingling with moms and dads in jeans and a crisp button-down. How was check in, getting to your room, and all that? In a word, seamless: As soon as the boat arrives, a member of the concierge team greets you and leads you to reception. It's easy, but if there was no one there to meet you, it may be a little confusing to find the check-in desk; the island is pretty large. No physics degree required to operate the lights in the room. Thankfully. The good stuff: Tell us about your room. The starting category is the Superior. It's small—you won't have much room beyond the bed and desk. But it's clean, has a classic look, and a decent bathroom with tub. I'd say spring for one with lagoon views, which is so lovely to wake up to. Room service and food: Worth it?There are six restaurants and bars altogether, from poolside lunch spots to terraces serving afternoon spritzes (an absolute must, regardless of price tag). Food is decent Italian—you won't eat badly at all. But the prices are highish, even for Venice. The breakfast buffet, however, is excellent. Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you.The grounds are impressive. There is a spa, gardens for strolling, a gorgeous bar that opens onto a terrace. This is a true resort: You could spend five days here and never leave. Bottom line: Worth it, and why?Worth it. The grounds themselves make this place appealing. Venice is so beautiful but so so crowded, it's nice to start and end your day somewhere you can breathe. For families it's perfect because the kids can actually run around. And views of Venice from the island never get old. A downside? Being dependent on the hotel boat to bring you back and forth to the city gets a little old after the first day, despite how reliable it is." - Erin Florio

Dear San Clemente Palace Team,||thank you for the amazing time we had at your hotel. It was absolutely perfect. A stunning property, excellent quality and the most friendly team.||We enjoyed every second here and everyone contributed to make this vacation even more special. Starting from the planning of my engagement proposal, to the organisation of it or the arrangements of transfer and much more - everything was perfect. It will be a vacation which we will always remember and we will gladly come back to this outstanding hotel.||The breakfast was delicious and we liked the variety and especially the relaxed atmosphere with classical music. Just one thing, I would have preferred: a proper Italian espresso from a portafilter machine instead of an automatic machine. The whole hotel displays a vibe of traditional elegance (smell, music, art and decoration) and we loved everything about it. A heartfelt thank you to all team members for being exceptionally friendly.||Special thanks and compliments to Lisa from Guest Relations, Marika from Reception, Michael as Head Concierge and Roberto from Greeting Team all of you you made our stay one of the best we had so far!||Best regards and see you soon|Maximilian & Olga

San Clemente was absolutely beautiful! The hotel is a 10 - 15 minute boat ride from the Piazza San Marco by hotel shuttle that runs frequently. It has beautiful grounds, a big swimming pool, and an excellent restaurant on the water. The service was impeccable from the moment we arrived and the room was spacious and comfortable. We had the best of both worlds - the hustle and bustle of Venice and the relaxing calm of San Clemente. Would stay there again upon a return trip!

We had a fantastic peaceful stay at San Clemente during a busy season in Venice. The property is elegant with every detail exceptional. The hotel staff were excellent, Manuela and the reception team were superb. Very welcoming and attentive and dealt with special requests with pace and precision. Giuseppe on the concierge team was a real pleasure to chat with and gave fantastic recommendations and support with bookings.

San Clemente Palace is a sanctuary of art and history, floating just minutes from the heart of Venice. ||From the moment our boat taxi pulled up to the island, we knew we were somewhere extraordinary. The grounds are absolutely breathtaking - lush gardens, a 1,000 year old church, contemporary art, Venetian style....yep, all present and accounted for. So while the ferry to Venice is frequent and easy, but the beauty of the island makes you want to stay and savor the moment.||Our room was beautifully appointed and offered a view of the lagoon. The staff was gracious, warm and attentive - without being intrusive. The included breakfast service is outstanding! The pool is a dream. ||If you’re looking for an unforgettable stay in Venice, this is the place.

A true paradise away from the crowds in Venice. The complimentary shuttle makes it convenient to head into San Marco square for easy access to most destinations. The team at San Clemente palace was attentive and personable. Excellent service as we were greeted with smiles all around with every interaction. The concierge team was excellent in arranging our transportations. The room was comfortable and has a historical feel. The island itself is beautiful and the gardens are well maintained. My wife and I are looking forward to staying here again for our next Venice visit.

Everyone is so friendly and we felt very welcome. Also amazing was to be surprised on my birthday. ||We wish you all the best and please keep this magical place.

From the moment we were greeted at the door by the hotel manager to our warm reception and orientation by Manuela, our stay could not have been more perfect.|The Palace experience is like being in a Slim Aaron’s photo. Warm blues, whites, rich greens of the gardens, every color of happiness.|The grounds abound with magic, shaded lunch areas,a pool of Murano glass tiles that sparkle blue and look like diamonds underwater, imaginative hole golf ,jogging trail, Italian bikes to traverse the grounds.|The Longevity Spa treatments will recharge you, the magnificent food will fuel you, and the magnificent staff will cater to your every need. Love them and they will not disappoint, we have never been treated more royally in our whole lifetime. |We travelled as grandparents with young adult grandchildren of 18 and 21, all agree with the above. My only regret is that our combined age of 165 will limit our return, but there’s always a chance and a dream.

Just checked out. Peaceful. Accommodating. Tasteful. After a long week across Europe, we decided to stay for 8-days at the San Clemente Palace. And it exceeded my expectations. Their social media, and online presence does NOT give this place justice. The property is breathtaking. It’s on its own private island, and is only accessible to patrons; and it really is the perfect escape from the chaos of Venice proper. You’re close to everything, but removed just enough to breathe, and enjoy peace and quiet. The boat transfers into Venice are super seamless too, and in our whole trip they were never crowded (we took them at least twice a day). The hotel design deserves a mention on its own. It’s tasteful and elegant. Everything from the landscaping to the lighting to the little design details just hits right. You can tell the place was put together with care. Now, service, and I don’t say this lightly, was flawless. Every single staff member we dealt with was warm, professional, and genuinely helpful. Some standouts were: Ilaria, who worked at the restaurants, Caterina at check-in was great, then Marika and Yasmin were the two that were at the front desk more consistently during our stay; all great and a pleasure to deal with. The concierge team, especially Roberto and Dan, made every outing and reservation feel effortless. And Leonora at the spa gave me one of the best massages I’ve ever had. Also, the on-site restaurant is also worth mentioning. I’ve eaten my way through Italy, and somehow, the best pasta I had during the trip was right here at the hotel… It’s also a great date-night spot; quiet, romantic, great atmosphere. Overall, if you’re the kind of person who values space, privacy, and service that actually enhances your stay (not just boxes checked), this place delivers. I’ve stayed at my fair share of top-tier properties, and San Clemente Palace stacks up very well against the others.

Yelp
First time in Venice and I'm so happy we chose to stay here. We were having a hard time choosing, we wanted some nice but also near San Marco square, and let me tell you that was hard to find. After searching the web for about 40 mins my husband decided this would be our choice. The reviews were good and pictures were even better. Let's just say it did not disappoint! Just upon arrival we were impressed, the grounds are beautiful and well kept. The employees were awesome and very helpful. And the room was just simply beautiful.

Yelp
I just got married here!!!! It was truly breath taking and a dream come true. The staff was amazing, incredibly helpful and attentive. I especially want to thank the site coordinator, Lucia Giugliano and event director, Sergio Bruno. They made our destination wedding everything we envisioned. Communicating our vision all the way from California was not easy, so again thank you so very much to San Clemente Palace Kempinski for your patience, professionalism, accommodations, and everything!!! I highly recommend this hotel for your stay. It is truly a story book location and stay. Andrew and I will forever hold this place in our hearts, and will continue to visit.

Yelp
I had the pleasure of staying at San Clemente Palace Kempinski in Venice with my girlfriend. I highly recommend this wonderful establishment. The staff is forthcoming, and the island offers the perfect getaway from an otherwise very busy Venice, with boat rides every 20 minutes to and from the island. We were generously upgraded to the "Venice suite", which is a gorgeous and spacious room. If you are lucky, you might even see the hotel's mascot "Clemente" - a beautiful white rabbit that roams the island. :-) We would like to thank the kind team at the hotel for the lovely stay and hope to come again one day!

Yelp
Got engaged here almost ten years ago. This place is remarkable in every aspect. Staff was very nice, service was 5 stars all the way. If the opportunity came along, we'd definitely be staying again! It's not cheap, but you'll get your money's worth!

Yelp
Amazing, beautiful, secluded hotel in Venice. We went to Italy for our honeymoon and this is the hotel you want to end it on. The St. Regis Venice is on its own island about 10 minutes away from San Marcos (St. Mark's Square) but don't worry because this is the St. Regis, they offer a complimentary boat to and from San Marcos every half an hour. The boat ride is ten minutes away and it's a boat ride I enjoyed every time. I thought I've experienced service but this hotel takes it to another level. From the moment you get off the boat, they have someone welcoming you, walking you to the hotel where they put you at the front desk's hand. From there, the front desk checks you in, walks you to your room to ensure everything is perfect in the room. We were greeted with delicious truffles in our room. I'm picky about my chocolate but the St. Regis ones definitely passed my palate. After the front desk lady leaves, they inform you the butler, yes butler (his name is not Alfred or Benson) will be coming over soon to help you unpack if you need it and their staff are at our disposal 24 hours. We didn't use the butler to help us unpack or iron our clothes but he did bring coffee up to us one morning which was great. When we returned at night we were greeted with chocolate and a bottle of wine (I think it's because it was our honeymoon). The staff are the most polite staff you will ever meet and definitely people that want to make you enjoy every single second of your vacation. When it was raining, they made sure we had an umbrella to use. When we asked what they recommend us doing, they got us a private boat to see the Murano glass. I will be up front and say nothing everything was perfect as there were a couple of issues such as the water did drain fast enough in the shower but they did fix it the next day and the safe wasn't working properly. I'm giving them a pass because the hotel is very new and sometimes it takes time to get the kinks out. Anyway the hotel has a small but nice gym, tennis courts, pool and a few very expensive restaurants (breakfast is 43 euros). The hotel room was absolutely one of the most beautiful hotel rooms we've been in plus it was also bigger than all the hotel rooms we've stayed at in Italy. The problem we have now is, now that we've experienced this, how can we stay at any other hotel that isn't as good as this St. Regis? We loved Venice and without a doubt will come back and when we do this is where we'll stay.

Yelp
The rooms were extremely comfortable and the service was outstanding. The food was only ok though. We ordered the stuffed chioggia onion to start and that was absolutely breathtaking. Next, we both ordered the "30 egg yolk" taglionini in lobster sauce, bisque. There wasn't much lobster in the dish and I would say it was good but not outstanding. They bring bread to the table and the best of the bread is the one that has a tomato in the middle of it. That one is soft and delicious. It left us wishing the other bread styles were similar to that one. My husband ordered the Chianti and I ordered a cocktail called 7th heaven. Both were delicious. My absolute favorite drink was the "lady in White". Restaurant service was wonderful and the bar service was good. Drinks got a little slow but there was a huge party in the bar that was being served so that wasn't a huge deal. I personally felt as though the cooks use too much salt. The red sauce on the turkey sausage in the morning was way too salty and we ordered room service one night and the penne with meat sauce was almost ruined because of the amount of salt in it. Everyone seemed to really try their best to make our experience enjoyable, which they did!

Yelp
We've been staying at this place for 3 nights. Before going here, maybe it is helpful to read about the history of this palace. The last purpose - before getting a hotel island - it was an psychiatric institution, so quite interesting to read about the island and its past. There is also an old basilica on the island what has its origin in the 13th century. Building: 5/5 stars You can clearly see it is a huge palace, now housing about 190 hotel rooms. You'll be brought to your room either by a receptionist or - if you are at least a gold member of Kempinski (minimum status with 1 - 9 nights per year), then you will be brought to your room by a gentle "lady in red", that's how they are called. The corridors and floors are very huge and give a nice ambience. They way to our deluxe room with lagoon view was quite far, what was not a negative aspect. High ceilings, old canvas and cahndeliers in the floors. Accomodation: 5/5 stars The room was quite comfortable, the bathroom with marble and enough space in the bedroom. Service: 3/5 stars Due to we had a queen size bed with one duvet, we asked for another one, so that everyone has its own. The night porter who brought it to our room came twice and didn't get the right one at least. So the understanding in english should be a matter of course in a hotel of Kempinski, but it wasn't. Breakfast Service: 4/5 stars The place for breakfast was not very crowded, what was nice. But for paying a lot for the night and expecting perfect service, we were asked to get out fresh orange juice at the entrance of the restaurant by our own. The second day the squeezer for fresh carrot juice was out of order, they said. They didn't have caramel sirup for the coffee I usually drink with it. They have a bar nearby, so it could've been expected to get it from there, where it definetily exists, as well as another squeezer. The guys of the water shuttle by the hotel were always kind and friendly, also helpful by getting in and out of the ship. quality and quantity of the breakfast: 2/5 This was quite dissatisfying. Expecting the good quality of the breakfast as at the Adlon Kempinski in Berlin for example, the quantity of the breakfast choices were quite poor. Small buffet but nice style, but the choices definetily could have been better. restaurants: (not visited) Two restaurants are located on the island + one bar. We wanted to go to the italian restaurant the first evening, but it was fully booked and we had to make a reservation for the next day. We didn't know when we would come back and the choice in Venice for good restaurants was too big, so we only ate outside, what was also a very good choice. When we passed this "fully booked" restaurant while going to the water shuttle to Piazza San Marco, we saw that there were only 4 tables occupied and we couldn't understand why they said it is fully booked, maybe they want to do perfect service for the few, but the waiters weren't busy. Waterbus/shuttle: 4/5 Pitily the first water shuttle starts at 9 o'clock from the island to Piazza San Marco, we were forced to cancel our trip with a Kayak group on another island, we would have missed them. A private shuttle, what is of course also a choice is 70 - 80 € from San Clemente island to Piazza San Marco. It wasn't worth it for us. But the water shuttle goes every 30 minutes, what is good and a nice ambience. For hotel guests it is for free. Also people who just want to visit the island can go with this shuttle for free because nobody asks for room numbers. The last shuttle goes at around 00:15 am. Free Wifi: 1/5 The Wifi didn't work very well. Disconnected, then connected for a short time again... They should make it more stable.

Yelp
Phenomenal. As soon as we got on the island, I was amazed. The property is spotless, the staff couldn't be any friendlier or more accommodating. The rooms were spotless, we have a view of the church on property, the ferry is super convenient to the city (15 minute boat ride) and it take you right to San Marco Piazza. Free Wi-Fi on the entire island. Breakfast was great, room and laundry was great, I just can't say enough good things. Wouldn't think twice about staying there. 5 stars all around.

Yelp
My husband and I really enjoyed our stay in this hotel. We came to the hotel via Costco Travel. They gave us 2-level upgraded suite (I think because it was our honeymoon). They also sent us champagne and chocolate with a card to our suite. What I really enjoyed about this hotel is, this hotel runs their private shuttle boats every half an hour between San Marco and the hotel. I really enjoyed the cool breeze in the boat.

Erik L.

Yelp
Was looking forward to staying at another Kempinski hotel but left disappointed and doubtful I will ever stay at another. First off, the exclusivity of the private island seemed like a draw but turned out to be isolating and an inconvenience. During the first or second shuttle ride, you think "wow this is great." After that, it's an annoyance. Further, the shuttle didn't consistently run on schedule almost causing me to miss dinner reservations and trains on the main island. There really wasn't an excuse for the shuttle to run late except that the captain had no sense of urgency nor was he mindful of keeping the time. The shuttle also stops for an hour at 1:00 which was inconvenient. Worse off, you're at the merci of the shuttle schedule -- the first one isn't until 9:00 AM so forget early excursions. I had to pay $100 for a water taxi to make a 9:30 train for a day trip. Aside from the shuttle service, the service of the wait staff was, by far, the worst I have ever experienced. Each time I went to the hotel bar, I had to ask if they were open because the bartenders hide in the kitchen. Once you place an order, they go back into the kitchen to hide until you flag them down again. There is no attention to service. The only time the bartender became visible was when he wanted to present the check so that he could close up and leave. After spending $200 at the hotel bar basically begging to be served, the following night, I bought a bottle of wine instead so I didn't have to deal with the bartenders and was given an attitude when I asked for him to cork it. The outdoor deck waitstaff was just as bad, if not worse. The waitstaff never acknowledged us or came around asking if we needed anything. I pressed the "call" button at least 15 times and no one ever came around. I moved my seat to be more visible and flagged down a waiter who couldn't get my "overly complicated" order correct - one pizza, one side of fries and an Aperol Spritz. At $10 per coffee, $20 per drink, and $30 per individual pizza, I expected better service. As far as housekeeping goes, things did not get any better - soaps, waters, and towels didn't get replenished even when asked and turn down service was only half way completed. Lastly, in an effort to put the miserable experience behind me, I went for a massage at the spa on my last day. 15 minutes into my treatment, the television from the fitness center below began blasting making the whole experience far from relaxing. On a positive note, the front desk staff and concierges were pleasant.

Yelp
Absolutely stunning property on it's own secluded island. Everything is renovated and up to St. Regis standards. It was extremely nice being away from the crazy hustle and bustle and touristiness of Venice. The one drawback is going back and forth to Venice. There is a complimentary shuttle every half hour that takes you to San Marco square. (The pick up is on a pier across from hotel Danieli Excelsior.) The staff was very friendly, courteous, attentive, and welcoming. The restaurant served us incredible food. Absolutely would LOVE to stay here again. The one thing I HIGHLY recommend is to take a private water taxi from the airport. It costs €130 one way and takes 25-30 minutes, but the alternative is a public water bus which is €15 per person and took us almost 3 hours to get to San Clemente island. Strongly recommend staying at this property!! Looking forward to coming back again someday soon!
