Madrid Residents Are Turning to Local Mercados Amid the Coronavirus | Condé Nast Traveler

"Two weeks ago when Madrid first entered its lockdown, Pattem took to Mercado San Fernando, one of Madrid’s oldest mercados, one morning. She was surprised to find herself strolling alone throughout the mercado in search of some fresh vegetables, save for the security guards and the stall vendors. The mercado was well-stocked and enabled her to get in and out swiftly."

9 Best Markets in Madrid | Condé Nast Traveler

"Home to Madrid's premier natural wine bar (Bendito Vinos y Vinilos), sole purchase-by-the-pound bookstore (La Casquería), and a ramen counter that could hold its own in Tokyo (Yan Ken Pon), Mercado de San Fernando is as gritty and multicultural as the surrounding neighborhood of Lavapiés. Interspersed with the traditional stalls—snap up Spanish culinary souvenirs like canned fish, cheeses, sausages at La Sal—there are Mexican taco stands, hippie-dippie crafts purveyors, expert empanada makers, and every type of tapa. Get lost and follow your nose; you won't regret it." - Benjamin Kemper

Breathtaking selection of upmarket tapas. At times very busy. May be to find a corner to perch to eat your selection. Multi vendor food hall in glass old market hall. Well worth a visit.

Our madrilean friends took us there, and it seemed like this was also the activity for all Madrid. Lots of different food stands with mostly Spanish and Latin American cuisines, and most offer some kind of lunch deal. We shared a cachopo platter, a bottle of wine and Venezuelan bites for the 4 of us and paid around 50€ for the whole. Cool atmosphere, but the sitting spots are hard to get ! Like everywhere in Madrid, you learn to make what looks like a 2-persons space, enough to fit 4 plus some space for the food.

Google
Potentially nice market but despite opening at 7am, only a handful of vendors are open as of this posting at 1:40pm. Many vendors have 12pm listed as an opening time but there is no sign of life. An employee told us most open around 1:30 but it's still dead here. The siesta apparently lasts most of the day here.

good place to eat, drink, or even just to look around to experience local atmosphere. there is a meat shop named el rincon de manolo, super recommend as they serve nice bocadillos, meat products and drinks with very reasonable prices.

We went there around noon on a Wednesday. Only about half the businesses were open. Not many customers. Nothing special. You can check it out if you are in the area but I wouldn't go out of my way to go there

Plenty of eating and drinking shops with a variety of cuisine. We were a little worried when we got there since the market looked dead but we were there too early. By 8pm the place was hopping on a Friday night. Can recommend.

Fantastic, fantastic selection! You'll discover a delightful array of Spanish tapas and an impressive variety of drinks. This vibrant spot is a must-visit when you find yourself in Madrid; it's an experience that truly captures the essence of Spanish culture and cuisine. Be sure to stop by and savor the delicious offerings!

Madrid City Break 12//08/24, following our weekend in Porto. What a lucky find. Looked like a closed.down market down the backstreets of Lavapies, but was a nice little market. Enjoyed 2 small beers for €7. One an amber ale, the other a golden ale. Other stalls sold liquors and vermouth!

Yelp
I was here on a Sunday early afternoon and it was hopping busy! There was a festival going on -Tapapies, celebrating music and Tapas from many different cultures. There were special festival tapas offered in the food stalls and everything I tried was amazing!! Update: I excitedly went back on Monday for a repeat experience for lunch. The market is technically open from 9-3 but it was only the butchers and fish stalls open.

Yelp
Fantastic mercado experience! A stone's throw from where I was staying, this mercado fulfilled my expectations and then some. I was lucky enough to come on a Sunday during the Tapapies cultural festival. There were performers outside, and plenty of activity and great food inside. Each stall had a special "dish" for the festival in addition to their usual offerings. The prices were VERY attractive, almost "happy-hour-ish" where you could get a tapas/beer for 2-3 euro pp. Not bad at all. I think I spent 2 hours here and maybe spent 15 euro total? Came back the next day for a repeat lunch - around 11am - and nothing was open except for a butcher stall and two fishmongers. I think some places started opening up around 2pm, but then they were closing an hour later, so very easy to miss some of these places during the early part of the week - if they're even open at all. You'd have better luck for dinner if you came around 7-8pm. The downside to this is with fewer markets open, those that are open do tend to get crowded, and patrons tend to hang out and take it slow. TL;DR. Great food, great prices, larger and not as crowded as other Mercados, and not as touristy.

Yelp
Madrid is filled to the brim with markets to visit, but this one strikes just the right balance. In the heart of Lavapies, you expect that the market will reflect the diversity of the area without feeling overdone, and it does a great job. There are a good variety of stalls with different types of food and drink, though I'd love to see more of the variety that the neighborhood itself has. Of what there is, though, the prices are generally great and the atmosphere is really fun (at least on Sundays, when I go). My friends and I are sidra-lovers, so the Asturian stall right in the middle is a favorite of ours, and they have great sidra-and-food deals. Bond 40 was our pick for last Sunday after seeing their 2 spritzes for 9€ deal; the patatas bravas were (surprisingly) actually a bit spicy, a big plus for this American.

Yelp
Blink and you might miss the nondescript entrance to this market which has been here since 1944. If you want to cook at home, there are cheesemongers, butchers, and produce vendors. Ethnic and traditional prepared food are among the thirty some odd of storefronts, Mercadillo Lisboa was the perfect place to have brunch offering a gorgeous coffee and savory pincho de tortilla, just 2,50 euro. Tourists are rare and prices are extremely affordable, just don't expect to find menus and service in English.

Yelp
A note to the English-reading Yelpers: So the Spanish people takes naps in the afternoons. Therefore this Mercado actually closes in the middle of the day (around 4-5pm until 6:30pm) even though the hours say they are opened. The shop owners return around 5:30 to 6pm but don't fully open until 7pm. I really enjoyed this Mercado! It's my favourite!! It's so small (one floor, I think) and it takes 1 minute to walk from one side to the other. It's like a large warehouse sale. I like that it's quiet, spacious, lots of natural sunlight. There's everything you need: - a book store! - butchers, fruits/vegetables, cheese - beer shop (yes! an actual shop) with beers other than Mahou - wine store - baked sweet goods - artisan stores (soaps, jewellery) In addition to: - Carmen, the tiny cafe with outdoor seating. A little overpriced but there's wifi and a clean washroom. I waited here until the Mercado re-opened. - Bond 40, a bar and tapas place - a sushi restaurant! In the centre of the Mercado is this open space with some tables. Children, teens, and families usually take up the seats. But each bar has seating of their own.

Yelp
The place is very nice and lively on weekends, there are stands for almost anything from fruits and canned goods to books and handmade clothing. The Portuguese stand is very nice with friendly hosts.

Yelp
We visited on a Sunday after spending an hour or so at the local flea market. It is actually kind of hard to spot this place. We walked around the place before we noticed the entrance which were tinted doors. Some places take cards and some don't so you should bring cash. I want to love this market but a lot of the stands were closed and the ones that were open were so crowded! Basically you find a seat and grab it!! We were only two so we were ok with just hanging out on little bar ledges to eat or drink. Everything we ate while here was delicious. We had blood sausage & pork kebabs from a place all the way in the back and they were so nice to us and the food was delicious. But this also happened to be the most crowded area so we had to walk to another area to eat our food. We did find a spot at a vegetarian spot we found by the entrance, servie wasn't as nice but we were comfortable and the drinks were good. I would def. recommend that people try this place as it's still much less crowded and touristy than San Miguel and the food was very good.

Yelp
Very underrated and perhaps under-appreciated little market at the south end of the Lavapies barrio. Like many places in Madrid, it's hard to get a feel for when it's open. What I like about this market is that it seemed so tucked away from from the touristy riff-raff, and only seemed like the type of place frequented by local. The nice additions to Mercado de San Fernando that distinguish it from other places was the craft beer store. Most Spanish beer is bad, but here was a place to get a nice caña in the afternoon. Bond 40, another tapas bar there, serves free tapas with drinks. As someone who really loved visiting the different mercados in Madrid, this one was my favorite. Quite, small, and an important institution in my favorite neighborhood of Lavapies.
