"Accessible only by foot, or boat The tiny Abbey of San Fruttuoso is nestled in a cove between Camogli and Portofino, and accessible solely by foot or boat. If you want to hike it, find the trail at the far end of Camogli, and be ready for a steep, but gorgeous, two hour hike up and over the mountain. If you would prefer a quick 15 minute boat ride, catch the boat for a few euro in the harbor of Camogli and ride to San Fruttuoso in style. The abbey itself is beautiful, but it is also nice to simply sit and have a cocktail at the beachside restaurant (look closely - their kitchen is upstairs, so they send the food down in a small wicker basket when it's ready!)."

Yelp
This beautiful abbey is well worth your time, but access is not simple. Research it. At any rate, it was a nice stop along a 17 mile trek from Portofino to Camogli. That too is a recommended countryside adventure as you wind your way through various parks, small farms, olive orchards and citrus groves. In the summer months, you'll want to enjoy the water and pleasing vibes cast by the architecture. Should you continue and not make this your midway point back to Portofino, your next major point of population will be the waterside community of Camogli. The bold jaunt is well worth it, but ensure part of your itinerary includes definitive train plans back to Santa Margherita Ligure. From there to complete your uneven loop to Portofino, you can always follow the road along the coast and add another 3 miles to your well-worked feet.
