13 Best Hikes in California

"If you're up for a challenge, this Los Angeles day hike is one of the best hikes in California. Rated as difficult, with a total ascent of nearly 4,000 feet (to a total elevation of 10,064 feet), the 14-mile trek takes around 8.5 hours but is dog-friendly and requires no permits or fees. If you're not already huffing and puffing due to the strain and altitude, the views stretching from the Mojave to the Pacific will surely take your breath away." - Travel + Leisure Editors

I hiked up Mount Baldy with two friends yesterday, this time I picked up Old Baldy Trail instead of two others options to climb up the summit. This trail is very hard which is 14.6 miles round trip with around 5800 ft elevation gain, especially the terrain is rocky and loose, some of the sections are so steep. But the reward was we were be able to see cloud sea like what we could see from a airplane, it was so beautiful and spectacular.

If you are in LA and you are hiker and you love mountains this place is just a 25 minutes drive from Azusa, CA. You can be a dare devil or just go for those insta pics. Loved the hike and number of steps + miles done. LA is blessed with city, town, mountains and beaches what you need that state had it as a offer

What great place. This whole area is a dream come true for anyone who wants to get out and adventure. Any outdoor activity can be had. Please be kind: pack it in, pack it out. Smokey and Woodsie appreciate.

The San Gabriel Mountains a breathtaking. There is a minor road that goes through these mountains and some of the views there are spectacular. However, taking pictures with my camera phone do no justice what so ever. The views, the smell of the fresh mountain air, the feeling of being up there makes you think of the history of these mountains and the natives that lived and hunted here.

I went up to try and see some of the scenery the LA area has to offer. Wow was I disappointed. There was garbage EVERYWHERE. I came up from Azusa using the San Gabriel Canyon Rd. Basically from Mile marker 1, prepare to see trash strewn across all sides of the roads. I am not talking about a small amount of trash. I am talking about PILES of trash. All the recreation areas on the way up the canyon to Crystal Lake were closed. Additionally, there was graffiti on most of the pull outs. So disappointing. It is no wonder people are fleeing California, apparently the people here have forgotten what it means to be in communion with nature. So sad. I would hope to see USFS step up there efforts in maintaining this area. Great way to do that is charging an entry fee like other national forest areas.

Yelp
Ahhh the San Gabriel Mountains...this range will forever hold a special place in my heart! It's been an absolute privilege and completely transformative experience to call this place home. One of the most joyous surprises of my life has been discovering the hundreds of incredible hiking trails the SG mountains have to offer! I never expected somewhere so close to a crazy city like LA to have so much nature. I've seen more species of all kinds of creatures just in my SGM backyard alone in my short 5+ years here than I ever did growing up in the south. My words and photos could never do this range justice! I was ecstatic to discover that the SG mountains are now a protected national wilderness area!! 342,177 acres of the Angeles National Forest and 4,002 acres of neighboring San Bernardino National Forest have now been marked as a protected National Monument! And the people - I've met the most wonderful people in the SGV - many of you fellow Yelp elites as well! I've traveled the world and I can honestly say you don't find better folks! I've only scratched the surface too - I hope to spend the rest of my days exploring all the trails and capturing the natural magnificence of this fantastic range to the best of my ability! If anyone ever wants to hit the trails with me, I can make some great recommendations and would be thrilled to join you! Highly recommend exploring this place!
