When you first enter the bakery side of the establishment, the aroma of freshly baked goods wafts into your nose. Walk further in and to the right and there is the San Jeronimo restaurant, which is very spacious and full of fun decor - colorful banners hanging from the ceiling, bright lights wrapped around columns - taking you to Tijuana, Mexico. You're not in Staten Island anymore.
I ordered the fiesta sampler platter, which was perfect for me because I was starving but was indecisive as to what to feast on! The taco dorado ("golden taco") was very crispy and the guacamole, hot sauce, and sour cream all complemented it nicely. The fried chicken was not too oily and was flavorful on its own, but of course I had a few bites dipped in the hot sauce.
I had a mango drink which was super refreshing and not artificially sweet. I usually stick to water and hardly finish any other drinks, but that was the opposite here: practically finished my mango drink and my water was pretty much untouched (save for a few sips at the end when mango drink was nearly finished). My husband downed his horchata - it was his first horchata ever and he loved it. For his entree, he ordered the Molcajete 5 Carnes, which he loved and the presentation for which was lovely: a Mexican flag used as decor among the sizzling meats and cheese.
Our waitress seemed to be new but she was attentive and very sweet.
A delightful escape to Mexico on a Friday night! I recommend having your own little escape here for some delicious food and lovely ambiance to match.
