San Juan Island feels like a hidden gem tucked away in the Pacific Northwest, where the rugged beauty of the landscape meets a laid‑back island vibe that instantly puts you at ease. The moment you step off the ferry onto the quaint town of Friday Harbor, you’re greeted by charming waterfront boutiques, fresh‑catch seafood shacks, and a bustling harbor filled with sailboats and kayaks. The island’s most famous attraction, the San Juan Island National Historical Park, offers a fascinating glimpse into the region’s past with well‑preserved 19th‑century buildings and informative interpretive trails that wind through forests and coastal cliffs. If you’re a wildlife enthusiast, you’ll be thrilled by the abundant opportunities to spot orcas, bald eagles, and seals, especially during the summer months when the waters teem with life and the skies are alive with birdcalls. The island’s pristine beaches, such as South Beach and Lime Kiln Park, provide perfect spots for picnics, tide‑pool exploring, and sunset watching, with the soft sand and crystal‑clear water creating a picture‑perfect backdrop. Outdoor lovers can spend days hiking the network of trails that crisscross the island, from the challenging ridge lines of Mount Finley to the gentle loops of the Pelican Trail that offer sweeping views of the surrounding islands. Cycling is a popular way to get around, and the well‑maintained bike paths let you pedal at your own pace while soaking in the fragrant pine forests and sweeping ocean vistas. The local culinary scene is a delight, with farm‑to‑table restaurants serving up fresh Dungeness crab, locally sourced lamb, and artisanal cheeses that showcase the best of the region’s bounty. For a taste of island culture, be sure to check out the weekly farmers’ market in Friday Harbor, where you can sample homemade jams, handcrafted jewelry, and hear live acoustic music that adds a relaxed, festive atmosphere. Accommodation options range from cozy bed‑and‑breakfasts with ocean views to luxurious resorts that offer spa treatments and guided whale‑watching tours, ensuring there’s something for every type of traveler. Even in the off‑season, the island retains its charm, with quieter streets, crisp autumn air, and the occasional storm that adds a dramatic, misty backdrop to the scenery. The community on San Juan Island is warm and welcoming, often gathering for events like the annual San Juan Island Film Festival and the Fourth of July fireworks that light up the night sky over the harbor. Overall, San Juan Island delivers a perfect blend of natural wonder, outdoor adventure, and small‑town hospitality, making it a must‑visit destination for anyone looking to escape the hustle and reconnect with nature. Whether you’re seeking a romantic getaway, a family vacation, or a solo retreat, the island’s diverse attractions and relaxed pace ensure an unforgettable experience that lingers long after you’ve left the ferry dock.

I would probably have had a better experience if I had slept within the last 32 hours. Quite a bit of uphill walking. Getting off/waiting for the ferry wasn’t too enjoyable, but the food made it worth it.

Worst experience of my life! Got stuck in the island for hours, ferries got delayed , the authorities had no answers when we can leave. They said rescue ferry would come at midnight. Still waiting, it’s past 12 AM. Just frustrated, disappointed and tired!!! Please don’t visit this place if you are not staying overnight.

San Juan has its hidden gems outside of the popular sites that it is known for at Friday Harbour. It's landscape is breathtaking and the ocean views all around the island is beautiful. The open land, the homes, the culture here is amazing. The ferry ride itself was a treat. Definitely a must see if you're visiting Washington state.

Take a full day to enjoy this place. Ferry over on foot or by vehicle. Enjoy all the food and events on the island. Don't miss the last ferry out unless you planned to stay the night on one of their very nice hotels.

A must visit if you are in Washington. These islands have everything for your weekend getaway . Starting from lighthouses, farmers market, trails and great seafood restaurants. To top it , they have a cute alpaca farm which is a must visit for all . Highly recommend this and make use of the amazing ferry options you have from Anacortes.

So much to explore here! The round trip ferry from Anacortes to Friday harbor takes about 3 hours today ! So i suggest if you plan to visit this Island and see the scenic wonders here . Make sure you have two days or you leave Seattle city super duper early in the morning . Also the ferry to Friday here is kinda pricey if driving a car . For a suv it is like 55 dollars or so. For per grown up passenger, it is 16 dollars . Make sure you get the most of your trip !

I would visit San Juan island once a week for 4.5 years. See the seasons changing, the early morning ferry ride , the small local businesses, all are such a" fresh breathe of air " compared to the traffic infested, Seattle and it's terrible decisions by the city council members to ruin our streets, by taken out lanes , everywhere ! Turning a perfectly well Designed 4 lane road into a 2 lane road, is by far, the dumbest , most wasteful use of taxpayer resources , I've ever seen. I lived in Seattle my entire life ! To expand a sidewalk wider , so it absorbs a lane and or losing street parking or adding a bike lane , where it's not needed. Is taking away everything my tax dollars have been paying into for decades. Bicyclist can ride in lane, on any road except the interste freeways . Bike lanes are not needed. Sidewalks that are as wide or wider than vehicle lanes are not helping the steady flow of traffic, especially in a city that has a continues population growth year after year. I am expecting a huge refund for all my years of tax paying funds, that went to WDOT. Seattle citizens , now have ½ the amount of streets they used to have. That's is the best thing about the San yaun islands.....no Seattle city counsel board ruining people's commuting life. Thank you San yaun islands...please don't change for the worst
