Let me first start by stating that by the end of the week, I wasn't expecting to rate this 5 stars but after the customer service we received on the last day, it totally turned me around and made me a big fan! A few things to note, I was traveling with 2 other families so it was 14 of us in total! Okay, let's get into it!
Check-In: Upon arrival, we were greeted by very friendly staff, all with smiles! The check in person that helped check us in was names Nirvana and she was great! However, we did have an issue where our request to get connecting rooms was somehow missed, even though we confirmed that morning. We were traveling with several families and one of our families ended up not getting a room until 7pm on the first day (we got there at 1pm). Unfortunately they couldn't get us our connecting rooms until the next day so we got a temporary room for the night. There was some miscommunication the next day but eventually, it all worked out and they gave us $100 room credit for the inconvenience.
Rooms: The first room we stayed in felt muggy and damp and the shower tub didn't drain well. Luckily it was only one night as the next room we got for the remainder of the trip was great! Smelled and looked clean, with plenty of space for our stuff to be organized. We had a king bed and the refrigerator was enough to hold enough drinks for when we got thirsty at night. Overall, the room gets an 8 out of 10!
Restaurant: The restaurant at the resort was always busy so it was tough getting a table for our large group. Before our last day at the resort, we were never able to actually get into the restaurant as the lines were too long for impatient kids to wait more than half an hour. However, we were able to dine there on our last day (more on that later), and the food and service was amazing. The restaurant specializes in authentic Puerto Rican cuisine with Executive Chef Pablo bringing his family passed down recipes to life, where each dish was better than the next!
Service: I've found that in hospitality, you'll find both excellent wait staff and hosts as well as those that probably should find a new profession. This was true for this Marriott. Laying by the pool, enjoying some sun, we ordered some drinks from a waitress who never came back to deliver our order. Didn't catch their name but didn't really pay attention as we fully expected to get our drinks. However, there were also staff that went above and beyond in their customer service, working extremely hard to ensure we not only got our orders, but continually asked how they could make our stay better! These staff members were very memorable as they were attentive, friendly and kind with obvious customer service experience! Myra Segura, I'm talking about you!!
Now before our last day, I'd say I would give this place a 3.5 out of 5 but great customer service always makes me re-evaluate things and that's exactly what happened on our last day there. Our last day there, we decided to make it an all beach day and actually got down there at 7:30am. Enjoying the early morning breeze and the beautiful scenery was a great way to end our vacation and somewhat mediocre experience up until then. Around 10am, my wife wanted a mimosa, so off to the bar I went. Unfortunately, the bar was not opened yet so I happily sat at the bar hanging with other patrons. Then 2 guys came in and started inventorying the bar so I assumed these were the bartenders or bar managers. One of them greeted me and asked if I was waiting for a drink because the bar doesn't open for another 20 mins. I said yes but no rush as I'm on "Beach" time. He smiled and asked, "Do you mind if I ask how your stay has been?" I thought how wonderful that one of the bartenders or bar managers would take the time to ask that. I said playfully, "Do you want the honest truth?" He smiled back and said, "But of course. :)" He introduced himself as Luis and I then proceeded to give him feedback on all of my experiences at the hotel, good, bad and ugly. He actually took notes and wrote everything down! I shared some books on leadership (Like Good to Great) and we talked about great customer service! I was really impressed. He then sent one of the waiters in to make me a few mimosas which he treated me to, and I thought that was such a nice gesture and totally unexpected! He asked what I was doing the rest of the day and I did show him where we were all hanging out at the beach. I thought that was the end of it but boy was I wrong.
The bar manager ended up being the Director of Purchasing for The Ritz and he basically was pulling an undercover boss but from the customer side. Luis Gonzales Zaragoza is the name you want to remember as he went above and beyond in customer service! From complimentary beer, wine, champagne, and macaroons, to an epic private dinner with complimentary wine, he made us feel like VIPs! He treated me and my family as if we were his own family and made this trip really special! Truly epic!
