This was perfect for what I was needing and you get what you pay for, but overall, I would stay here again. I adored the old school style along with the quirky charm. The location is unbeatable close to parks, delicious restaurants and beautiful views. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. The rooms are very small and didn’t have much room, including struggling to find somewhere to put my luggage. The bathrooms are super clean at all hours so I didn’t mind sharing them, but I did find for the price, I would’ve rather upgraded another hundred dollars to have a private bathroom. WiFi is hit or miss, so if working remote like me, I recommend finding a nearby cafe (which there are plenty). This place is great for a quick nights stay, but more than 2 nights is tough. Also, the beds are small and pillows were not very comfortable. Overall vibe is an A+ though. Also, if you arrive on a Sunday, be sure to go downstairs to the oldest Italian restaurant in America, and enjoy some live jazz. Talk about a great welcome party!

As a solo female traveler, I felt safe in this area. This hotel has the most affordable price during the time that I searched. The room was decent enough for short time. There was only one downside that they don’t have elevator. Fortunately, a staff I met was really helpful and even carried my suitcase upstairs for me. Overall, I recommend this hotel if you’re planning to stay in this area.

Google
Room was fine but the window faced the reception area so the blinds had to be kept down the whole time. Walls are paper thin, so any noise travels. Bathrooms were clean and convenient. Good for a 2-3 night stay, wouldn’t consider for something longer

Top notch customer service! My flight into SF arrived early morning, and I was able to check in upon arrival, easy process, and staff is very kind. More impressive though is how wonderful the manager was after I had an unexpected injury, I broke my ankle during trip, and he called ahead to urgent care for me, assisted me with stairs, allowed a late check out to avoid airport issues, he was so kind. Wonderful customer service!!! Thank you! The location is perfect for exploring the city. Close to fisherman's wharf, aquatic cove, nearby restaurants, tour options, boating, everything! I traveled as a solo female, and I always felt safe in the hotel, the area, etc. Great trip (until the injury!) but I definitely want to return, and I definitely recommend this hotel. The rooms are small, but the hotel is quaint, charming, and a neat experience!

Google
This place deserves a solid 4 out of 5. It’s definitely special. This is a truly unique place with a lot of charm. I really appreciate the old vibe, it has such an authentic, vintage atmosphere. I don’t mind the shared bathrooms at all. I think they’re actually part of what makes the experience feel so unique. It honestly feels like you’re traveling back in time, like you’ve ended up in the 1900s. The only thing I’d improve is the size of the rooms. I knew they were going to be small, but I didn’t expect them to be that small. Also, I wish the hotel staff made my bed during the stay. They do change the towels, tho. I had a window with a city view. That definitely added some extra points. So yes, I’d definitely recommend booking a room with a city view. Overall, it’s a really cool place to stay for one or two nights! You def should try it!

- Under 10 mins walk from fisherman’s wharf and north beach. |- Room only small but you only sleep there! |- This was my first stay with shared bathrooms, and although I think 4 nights was too long for me personally, we never had to queue for toilet or showers, and they were always clean. - Bathrooms had cotton buds and pads, mouthwash, shampoo & shower gel. |- Nothing amenity-wise in room (just towels) but decent enough hairdryer on request. |- Water machine and microwave in reception. |- Free hot drinks machine from 7-1, I did think it would be nice to have the option of a hot drink later in the day. |- No laundry but Launderette 2 mins walk away. $5 a wash (20 min wash). There is a change machine for quarters. ||Can’t complain AT ALL for 4 nights in this location for under £300 during main summer holidays!!

Absolutely loved our stay here... As a fan of old Victorian buildings, this place was a dream. So much charm and character around every corner. The rooms were small (as they are in Victorian buildings), but the building's ammenities were great. Excellent location to a lot of major points-of-interest. We were even able to get our room early when we stopped by to check if we could leave our luggage there before check-in. Hard to beat the charm and value of this place, highly recommend!

Google
I had a good experience here overall! my room was very small, I was expecting a twin bed but got a full which I was happy about. I didn't have any kind of view from the window though unfortunately, so it felt a little claustrophobic. the room also didn't have a TV, or a heater. I had to request a space heater. the walls are thin so you can hear people walking around and talking in the hallway and other rooms. I brought ear plugs and used them almost every night. the location is great, it's safe and quiet in this area. lots of stuff to walk to from here! definitely old fashioned, not modern in any way, but the hotel has everything you need. there's even a hair dryer in the shared bathroom, which is great cause I often use one and didn't want to bring my own. the shared bathrooms and showers were fine, no problem. the guys at the front desk were very nice and accommodating. coffee machine was broken the whole time I was here unfortunately. I found the bed quite comfortable :) when maids came in to clean while I was gone, I wish they would have made the bed for me. seems they only changed the trash and the towels. it met all my needs for my 4 night stay in SF, but I probably wouldn't stay here again if I could find another, nicer (more modern) hotel for a similar price :) but it was very charming and lovely decorations!

Yelp
This hotel is a little gem ! This place is set in the neighborhood of north beach /telegraph hill .It's definitely more of like a hostel due to the bathroom and shower are outside of the room .The decor and old feel of this place is definitely worth the experience .There is a sink in the room ,and our room was fairly Tony so I'm Not sure if they offer more rooms at a larger price but what I do know is they offer coffee in the am.

Yelp
It's an older hotel, but fairly well kept, at least on the surface. Shared bathrooms, which is fine for the price. Great location in North Beach with little car traffic, and fairly quiet outside. But I checked in earlier this afternoon, and it's evening and there is some plumbing work going on in one of the shared bathrooms, and the knocking and hammering is shaking the whole floor. And an adjacent room has a group of twentysomethings who sound inebriated and are making a racket. The other reviews I read indicated it was a rather quiet hotel. Definitely closer to a youth hostel. I'm starting to regret pepaying for 3 nights. I don't plan on hanging out in the room much, but it would be nice to get some rest.

Yelp
We've stayed at San Remo about 6 times in the last 15 years. This time we stayed in the Penthouse. What I like about this place is that it's affordable and clean, the staff is always friendly, the location makes Columbus walkable and there's a great Italian restaurant on the first floor. If the weather cooperates the Penthouse's outdoor area is a great place to invite a couple of friends and enjoy the view The place has been this way since we started coming

Yelp
Solid choice for an affordable stay near fisherman's wharf! I really enjoyed my stay here. This place is something between a hotel and a hostel. You have private rooms with sinks inside and the showers and toilets are shared. The room was cozy and I loved the decor. It's felt like I was going back in time. They have space heaters available which I felt like I needed because I haven't adjusted to how cold it can be in SF! With the heater the temp was perfect. The room is small so it heats up easily. The bathrooms and showers were clean and towels are provided. I never had to wait for a shower or toilet. The desk attendant was so friendly. There is free coffee in the morning as well as drinking water available anytime. Location is a amazing. Just a 5 min walk to fisherman's wharf! It felt safe to walk around outside at night.

Yelp
My wife and I stayed the night here on 10/12/24 and unfortunately we were disappointed. We had a room with private bath. The room was at best 7'x9' and the bathroom was 32" wide and maybe 6' long including toilet and shower. There was a ceiling fan which was absolutely needed all night because of the muggy weather and we were on the 3rd floor. However, it was also very annoying because something in the fan was rubbing and made a constant loud clicking sound all night. The ceiling fan had a very low watt light that was equivalent to a very dim night light. However, other than the bathroom, that was the only light in the entire room. So once it got dark outside, the inside of the room was just as dark. We were then woke up by some haunted ghost tour that apparently they do every Friday and Saturday night. They were very loud and woke us both from a dead (no pun intended) sleep. The room and linens were clean. The hallway and staircase carpets were dirty and worn. The hallway decor was cool but it made navigating the hallway with a suitcase a tight fit. Parking is also a nightmare. There is never street parking available and it has a two hour limit or suffer a $97 ticket or even worse getting your car towed. We witnessed both happen. They gave us a map of two parking garages two blocks away with prices that are supposed to be reduced for hotel guests.. The prices were supposed to be $35-$40, however, when I went to park, the parking garage had the price listed at $100. I ended up parking 8 blocks away at $60. The rooms have no amenities at all. There is a coffee machine by the front desk but has a sign that it is only available from 7am to 1pm. Overall, it is way over priced for the lack of amenities, lack of hospitality, room size, parking issues, and distributions. We stayed the next night at The Queen Anne just 2 miles away. We paid about the same price Overall for the nights stay when taking in parking and the Queen Anne came with a night reception with cookies, coffee, sipping whiskey, and breakfast. Not to mention, the room and bathroom was 4 or 5 times larger, parking was 100 feet away, and the overall decor and ambiance was awsome.

Yelp
So unique and fun! It's like stepping back in time -- we loved exploring the halllways and looking at all the decor and framed photos. The penthouse was such a wild surprise! Our own rooftop patio! Treat yourself to a meal at the Italian restaurant Fior d'Italia below the hotel. Romantic and amazing lamb. We will be back for both!

Yelp
Never did I think it was going to be so adorable. It is shared restrooms/showers. Bring sandals. They have the bathroom essentials in case you forget. A lot of rooms in this hotel. Would love to see the penthouse. Would definitely stay here again.

Yelp
It's crazy I needed to post this but buyer beware. We were planning a trip to SF next fall 2023. We wanted to get the Penthouse like we did last trip. But get this. Rooms that normally are $88 are $800. This has to be a way to total rip off tourist. Remember this is for a shared bathroom. I even called to verify.

Yelp
Where do I even begin--it was an absolute DREAM staying here. Easily one of my favorite parts of my trip. I was very skeptical at first--the sharing of bathrooms, small rooms, uncertain amenities--but I now know I had nothing to worry about and would recommend this place to anyone that's not afraid of having a different experience and is ok with redefining what they think of as a comfortable hotel. We arrived early. Our room was not available for early check in, but we were allowed to leave our bags until then, so we went out for lunch. Check in was easy. The room was VERY small with no tv or lounging space (other than the bed). Honestly, though, we didn't come all this way to take naps, so it was a good push to get out and explore. The bed was very comfortable and the room was clean and reminded me of home. There was a ceiling fan and a floor one to keep cool. They also supplied ear plugs, as the walls are thin. It was sort of comforting, though, hearing the staff clean up dishes downstairs in the restaurant and hearing the creaking of floors. Again, it felt like home. The bathrooms were kept pristine during our 3 night stay, and there never was a moment when there was a line. There are plenty of other bathrooms on the floor and even on the floor below. Amenities included soap, shampoo, conditioner, towels (which rested on a warmer), makeup remover cloths, cotton swabs, mouth wash, coffee, tea, water, candy, ear plugs, extra blanket in the room, and chair massage on each floor. The corridors of the hotel are also beautiful, with greenery lining the entire ceiling and skylights illuminating nooks and crannies. I found a nice little area at the end of the hall by the window to read, whenever I was too tired to go out. It was perfect. I absolutely love this place.

Yelp
Overpriced for what you get. Cramped, very tiny rooms, with no TVs or much anything else.

Yelp
This place is antiquated . Old used not preserved. The room has no ventilation . It has colored sheets for bedding. This place smells of old and unclean. Not only when I arrived they had bags of trash in the entrance with a wonderful Display of human Waste. The mere fact the stairs are not narrow and at times seem to give. Let's talk about the bathroom it is shared and sink to wash your hands is in another part of the hotel is absurd. The showers are dirty with half way curtains. Why would Anyone want to stay here for 200 dollars a night . I love to see business have a vintage theme but this is very worn and unkept building .

Barbara S.

Yelp
Been visiting over the years. Always good. This time, the greeting was the best of all. Om Patel, behind the desk, made every effort to accommodate us. We Love this place!

Yelp
Decent Inexpensive and in a good location. Staff is very friendly and willing to help. There is a great Italian restaurant connected.

Yelp
Disappointed. To be honest, if they warned me the room is tiny and the bathroom and shower are shared before I booked, I might still choose to stay here. However, on their advertisement the room is more spacious than I saw. I understand the hotel try to maintain like original and that's the reason why I would pick it. But don't over-polished it on the advertisement photos Still, I would like to pay the same amount of money to spend a night here. The decorations are ancient, the beddings are very European style, the room is warm and comes with a electrical heater. It's tiny but it's historical and comfy. There are 2 shower rooms and 4 toilets on each floor for sharing. Laundry room on site and light refreshments are offered free in the morning. The location is within the walking distance of fisherman's wharf. If you are an adventurous person, I would recommend this place.

riley m.

Yelp
This hotel is so cute, full of history, and very authentic! It's the perfect walking distance to fisherman's wharf, pier 39, & Ghirardelli Square! They have yummy coffee in the morning, and the front desk staff is friendly. My only disappointment was on San Remo's website it states the penthouse comes w TV with cable & Netflix, it does not. And when we called the front desk to ask what was up, they had no clue what we were talking about. The rooms seem clean until you stumble across strains or trash left from previous guest. Our bed had an old stain, the patio had an old cup of smoked cigarettes, and the shower curtain has what looked like a blood stain. So other than that, great stay! It's definitely not your typical Hilton Inn

Yelp
They use the word HOTEL and I can't wrap my head around equating THE SAN REMO to a 'hotel' at all. Very European, very warm, extremely clean, welcoming and helpful beyond ANY 'hotel/motel' I've ever lodged in. Every single employee, every one, seemed as though they were so proud of THE SAN REMO and wanted to make sure I was ok with everything. Beautiful! Decor very nicely established. I need to double check....isn't THE SAN REMO on The Register of Historic Places? IT WAS EXACTLY LIKE VISITING A GOOD FRIEND AND STAYING IN THEIR HOME. I had two large bags and I pulled and pushed them up that one flight of stairs without an elevator....who has an elevator in their home? LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION....for me was the key. I was able to walk everywhere without being in a weird touristy environment. It was nice to be at The Wharf but not at The Wharf. Many Americans would find gong down the hall to a private commode room or private shower room uneasy. I think nothing of it. I guess I've traveled way to much to be pigeon-holed into preconceived notions. I reserved a room with a sink in it and that was a great thing for me too do. The always fresh coffee and iced fruit or cucumber waters helped. There were some nice muffins, mints and supplies available. It's a go to for me. The week I was there they seemed to be at full occupancy. There are two floors that I know of...maybe there penthouse is then a separate floor. The first floor is actually the second floor of the building. Please....THE SAN REMO is more than you get most elsewhere in a hotel.

Yelp
Since we intended to feel and experience the quaintness of San Francisco without being pampered by giant hotel industry, we've decided to try the San Remo Hotel in North Beach. The inconvenience of a shared bathroom on every floor is not for everyone, although the cleanliness, the towel supplies and the over all look of the communal bathrooms are really faultless. The hotel's location played an important factor as well as to why we considered to stay here. The major tourist attractions are stones throw away such as Fisherman's Wharf, Lombard Street, Coit Tower. The Cable Car station on Powell street is just right around the corner, it will take you conveniently all the way to Union Square but for a price! ($6 per ride). In summary, you get what you pay for and so much more, be warned though that rooms are small, the queen bed that we had is a tad short for six footers. Although the stay was adequate, it is a one time deal for me.

Julia M.

Yelp
I absolutely LOVED staying here! The entire hotel is so cute with American history and art posted all around. There's even a patio on the roof! The rooms are perfect for a couple's getaway equipped with a sink, wardrobe, dresser, and a full size bed. My boyfriend and I found the room to be quite cozy and perfect to come back to and unwind in after a long day of walking around playing tourist. The shared bathroom is central to all the rooms and is very well kept. The showers have a heated lamp and standing room to undress while you wait for the water to heat up and all is blocked off by a thick wooden sliding door that locks to guarantee privacy. The toilets are also cool with a Victorian-style, pull chain flush. Lastly, location was everything! We were able to walk less than 10min to get dinner at any spot in North Beach which was truly our saving Grace! Being close enough to go grab an early dinner, come home and change, and then head out for some drinks with friends was all we could've asked for. Will definitely be recommending this hotel to all friends and staying here again next time I'm in SF!

Annette G.

Yelp
The manager contacted me and encouraged me to call the office. They had the wallet but the staff on duty couldn't locate it at the time I was calling. They mailed it to me right away and didn't charge me. They also informed me that they are working hard to keep the hotel clean and accommodating. I believe them and would like to stay there again. Very nice management!

Alexander M.

Yelp
Shared bathrooms/ bad smell/ tiny rooms/no air-conditioning/ more like a hostel than a hotel. No private bathrooms. Untrustworthy staff in every sense. Boutique hotel this is not.
google avatar

Lorie M.

Yelp
Beautiful hotel with rich historical touches throughout. It was a bit different not having a sink or bathroom in the room, but we adapted to it, and it was a learning experience. Right next door is a lovely Italian restaurant that dates back to the early 1900's. Within a block or so are the piers, and the neighbor is quiet and safe.

Yelp
I NEED to give all 5 starts for sure. OK Rooms are small but very well kept and very clean. The bed could have been wider for a double bad but this is all I could complain about. Very clear shared bathrooms that were cleaned several times a day. BIG THUMBS UP for that. Very nice staff and everything was done to make us feel welcome here. The location is the next BIG PLUS. Not more than 5 to 6 mins to the Warf what do you want more? GREAT PLACE TO STAY
google avatar

Fernando S.

Yelp
With this being my first trip to San Francisco and planning on doing the whole tourist thing, I couldn't of pick a better hotel for the full experience. Sure there's no bathroom in your room but I really didn't find that much of a bad thing. They make that up with all the amenities and their attention to detail of good hospitality. From the free coffee/tea/hot cocoa and cookies in the morning to the Q-tips and mouth wash near the showers. The staff was also very friendly and helpful. They let you store your luggage after you check out for the day. The only thing I could of done without was that you hear everything from the street at night but I was still able to sleep from being tired from sighting seeing all day. They also have complementary ear plugs in your room just in case. If you are looking for a unique fun experience this is perfect for you.

Yelp
I booked the penthouse recently for my birthday with my girlfriend and two of my friends. After having stayed there before and finding it small but quaint with a view that can only be described as mediocre. I decided that it would be a neat place to show my buddies who were flying in from across the country. I made reservations weeks in advance and when the night of my birthday came, and when my friends had been picked up from the airport, we proceeded to the San Remo hotel to check in and head out to catch up and celebrate my birthday. HOWEVER, when we arrived, my girlfriend dropped us off out front with our bags and went off to park the car. We checked in, making it clear that my girlfriend was parking the car and that she would be joining the three of us shortly, and headed up to the penthouse to put our bags down. It was about at this point that my girlfriend walked into the lobby and inquired about how to get to the rooftop "penthouse". No sooner did she make this inquiry, then suddenly the desk clerk "remembers" that there is a three people only policy in the "penthouse". I was shocked. Being a returning guest who had no problem checking in more than 3 white friends in the past, I felt that this was a clear cut case of racial profiling. I inquired further and was informed that the "owner had seen us on the camera and called in to remind the desk clerk of the new 3 person only rule". Conveniently the moment my black girlfriend walked in... I objected but the staff held firm that it was not negotiable and we were refused the room despite having already checked in, having it reserved for weeks, and having stayed there multiple times in the past with out incident. Needless to say this whole event put a damper on my birthday and made my girlfriend feel both dejected and responsible for "ruining my birthday" There is no room in this world for racism and especially not in a place a progressive as San Fransisco. I will NEVER return to this establishment and encourage anyone who reads this to think twice about supporting a shamelessly and outwardly racist establishment.

Yelp
For an authentic early 1900 experience, this is your place. It's similar to time travel without the Montauk security clearance or damage DNA cells from Philadelphia Experiment. Great location in North Beach especially if your going to Beach Blanket Babylon or walking the area. Staff was warm and friendly and a wealth of knowledge which enriches your UNDERSTAND life was different back then with SHARE BATHROOMS.

Yelp
I don't know where to start with this place. It is quaint, inexpensive, centrally located, and riddled with character and history. It is hard to find a hotel in San Francisco where you don't feel robbed. This is a rare gem. It was under $100 a night (it was $90 for a double bed) and for $200, you can get a penthouse on the roof. The shared bathrooms are not a problem, which I being a female was leary about. They are clean and I never ran into anyone or waited in line (and it was a full house). It is VERY quiet. You can hear pots and pans from the restaurant below, but it didn't bother me. The beds are squeeky and the walls are thin- you can almost hear the conversations verbatim of the guests next door. Those are the only possible cons to this place. The hotel has so much character. Alas, no ghosts. It isn't creepy. Yes, it was build in the early 1900's (1910's) but it is so cute and warm- very Victorian- and really does have a true at-home feel. The bathrooms actually help make it feel more homey. The employees at the front desk are nice and informative- good customer service. Bottom line, I am going to stay here again and again. I would recommend it anyday to anyone who wants to stay somewhere extraordinary.

Yelp
This hotel was like stepping back into another era! It's a communal hotel in that the restroom/shower area is shared space with everyone checked in. But the old century aesthetic makes it so that you really feel like you're part of the San Francisco community, even if you are a tourist! The staff is also very friendly and amazingly helpful! The hotel is near many places you can walk to and if you're looking for something with a bit more class, the restaurant downstairs is amazingly up to par. My boyfriend and I loved this little hotel and feel lucky that we found it! I definitely would recommend this place to anyone visiting SF! I gave only 4 stars instead of 5 because the rooms are very close together and if you're looking for an abundance of privacy, this isn't the place to be. Other than that, I was a fantastic hotel and I can't wait to visit again!
google avatar

Michael K.

Yelp
It's a little hard to find, but if's on top of a cafe/restaurant. Very cheap for slightly better than hostel. Walls are paper thin, and there are enough noises to wake me up about 4 times throughout the night. Sunday at 430am I believe the trash truck comes by the alley and wakes yo ass up. Shared bathroom/showers, each have their own locked door, so not quite full dorm style. Wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Free wii fi - they give you code) Pretty clean. Block away from trader joes and ralphs, very close to wharf area, about 3-4 block walk. (SF IS SO SMALL!) Not a good place if you want to have sex (Thin walls), are a light sleeper (seems like constant commotion), you need to go bathroom often (can be taken and a walk depending on where you are), or need to get out quickly (showers/bathroom often taken). But it's one of the cheapest in the area and the service is very good. They were even nice enough to mail me my slippers I forgot for a fee. I don't think I'll use it again, cause I need my sleep! But I think anyone who wants to do a better than hostel environment and save some cash (was $300 cheaper per night then where my event took place) would find this to be a great place.

The Dude L.

Yelp
The Dude has a sense of adventure. The Dude has experienced the horrors of travel and has stayed in unsanitary conditions throughout this great land of ours. He can abide much. But this hostel is not for anyone into the whole brevity thing. The building itself is funky and very interesting. Lots of what have you cover the walls, with pictures of old San Fran from the building's years as an apartment for sailors and crab fisherman. It's a well maintained hostel, and there was never any concerns for the Dude's sanitary state. And yet no veneer has been applied to the walls to make it clean for the square community. The place has a definitely interesting aura, and this is what makes it cool. Other dudes and ladies have complained about the noise and the shared bathrooms, but the Dude spent a lot of time in communal living situations during the sixties and seventies, and this actually lends the place an air of hominess that you don't get in the big hotels. Where they lost The Dude was with the attitude. If the people at the desk would have just f**king LISTENED and engaged, they might have learned something. Hospitality bespeaks a mode of communication that instills a sense of welcome, some kind of sense that you've arrived in a place where you can call home for a space of time. The Dude received no such emotional empathy, simply the gruff, all business demeanor of locals disgusted by invading outsiders. It came off as real reactionary. The Dude wanted to ask these people why they were working in the industry at all. It detracted from the potential of the venue and pissed The Dude off. I try to support small, local businesses whenever I can, but not when they act like they don't owe me anything for the money I give them. But hey, that's just my opinion, man.

Yelp
I have stayed at the San Remo Hotel five times in the last couple of years and there is not a better hotel in San Francisco for the price, location, and experience! The staff is friendly, the hotel unique, and even though there are shared bathrooms they are always spotless. I recently stayed in the Penthouse suite on the roof and it is worth the splurge!! Beautiful views of the city and your own private space.

Yelp
Seriously loved staying here! Staff and owner are very friendly!! Found the postcards in the end level desk and found out front desk sends them for you. Towels on towel warmers was a big plus. They have one bath tub kinda tuck away. They offer baths salts in the room. Coffee and hot tea while front desk is open. Will be back everytime.

Yelp
Although it's shared bathroom and shower, sometimes sink too, they are very clean and provide everything in shared sink, mouth water, lotion and even make up remover for ladies. Strong recommend for single traveler and couple.

Yelp
I stayed here at the end of a very long trip and my expectations were low. But I ended up quite happy with the hotel. I wasn't looking forward to sharing a bathroom (my room didn't even have a sink). I was jet lagged, exhausted and ready to hate everything. But it turned out to be a lovely stay. The bathrooms were clean and organized. And there were just enough that one was always free. The room was small, but heck, it's San Francisco... The place looks and feels like I'm visiting someone's rich grandmother. They had free coffee, water and tea all day long. There were also snacks that changed throughout the day. In the bathrooms they had everything you could ever need: mouthwash, makeup remover, qtips, etc. they also had a laundry room (I think coin operated) and a vending machine. The only reason I give it 4 instead of 5 stars is because the bedding was a bit old (I get the vintage vibe, but old comforters are icky) and I think the artwork crosses a line. There were a lot of pictures and cartoons of nude women in the hallways. And they weren't exactly empowering... They were from way back when (50s?) and made for male entertainment. I am baffled as to why they are up at all. It isn't that noticeable, but it seems like poor judgement on their part. Also, the staff was not very friendly. They did their jobs ok, but weren't what I would call welcoming. Now that I think about it, 4 stars sounds generous. But... you put up with a lot for a reasonably priced hotel on SF and I've definitely paid way more for worse.

Yelp
Was terribly disappointed on my 3rd stay after COVID. They went from 3 stars to 0. Reason #1 No morning snacks like before covid...#2 had to immediately request a different room because the first one was uninhabitable due to thick cigarette smoke odor...#3 tho I keep the "do not disturb" sign throughout my stay, someone entered my room while I was away. The evidence was that the door was ajar when I came back from the city...#4 filthy, smelly, sticky, worn out...#5 staff stole my daughters wallet with aprx $30 inside that was left behind. The evidence is that when I first called from the airport and identified myself as recently checked out from room 12....the staff immediately told me they found my money purse that was left behind and all I need to do is send them a prepaid return label and they will mail it. However, upon calling them for more detail instructions I was told "there is no wallet, you are mistaken". Thieves!

Yelp
This place is fantastic. I spend about 100-150 nights per year on the road and generally stay in Marriott, Westin, Sheratons etc. In SF it can be tough to find an affordable hotel and I stumbled upon the San Remo and love it. Rustic-Yes, Cool- Yes, Friendly- Yes. I rented the "Penthouse" which has its own roof deck, private bathroom and basic but totally workable amenities. I would stay here again in a heartbeat. Check it out, you won't be disappointed if you understand what you are actually getting. Great Value

Yelp
The San Remo may not be for everyone, but if you're open to a bit of adventure, this is a wonderful base camp for any San Francisco trip! I recently visited San Francisco to attend an event being hosted downtown. The "bath on the hall" concept doesn't bother me, so I gave the San Remo a call. I had not traveled to San Francisco before, but from the maps, the location looked fine. I made my initial reservation via Internet. I later decided to extend my stay. While the San Remo had rooms, I would have to change rooms multiple times during my extended stay. I agreed, thinking I would figure it out as I went along. Before my arrival in San Francisco, the staff called me to let me know they had worked things out so my entire stay could be in one room. This helpful attitude was consistent throughout my stay, not that I needed much attention once I arrived. I was assigned what I consider the perfect room - third floor (no elevator, so consider that if it's important) on the front. From my windows I could see Coit Tower and the tips of St. Peter and Paul church. The lights from the church in the evening fog were beautiful. I arrived on a Wednesday - and the downstairs Italian restaurant has live jazz on Wednesday nights. I loved this added touch, but if music is not your thing, earplugs are provided in the room. When I arrived in my room, the windows were open and the lamp was on ~ so welcoming and cozy! Yes, the showers are on the hall, but they are quite nice. The ones on my floor were my favorite (one day, in more of a hurry to get started, I went downstairs, where the shower had no anteroom) ~ scrumptious bath products in the shower, warm towels, and an anteroom so your things don't get wet, and you can dry off under the heat lamp. A towel warmer outside the showers keeps fresh warm towels at hand. The San Remo provides bathrobes, but no one seemed to take advantage of that. While there were mornings when the showers were full (on one floor,) I could always find one open somewhere. There was never a delay for me in accessing a toilet. One of the bathrooms has a ginormous clawfoot tub and sink ~ this is where the toddler staying on my floor seemed to want to bathe every day. My room had a sink in the room, which made all of the toothbrushing, hair drying, etc. much easier. The bed was comfy. If you're a pillow-particular person, my full bed had four pillows ~ two firmish and flat, two fluffy and soft, with unique pillowcases to each pillow type. Hubs would have loved that if he had been along on the trip. Massage chairs are in the alcoves on both floors, perfect for relaxing with a cup of tea and conversation after a long day of roaming the city. There are several small gathering spots, so if you're feeling squished in the smallish rooms, the alcoves are perfect escapes. Bookcases hold a multitude of books for reading in moments of downtime. Also, clean rooms are left open with the light on awaiting the next guest. Walking through you can see all the different room configurations and the beautiful furnishings. The San Remo gave me everything I wanted ~ a clean, homey base with ease in getting around. In the mornings, a coffee bar (with brownie bites!) got me started, and in the afternoons, coffee, tea, and some candies are available. The location is close to any public transportation stop. I bought the MuniPass and wandered all over town. I sometimes arrived back late at night, but felt perfectly safe walking from the bus stop or cable car stop back to the San Remo. The hotel is a couple of blocks from Fisherman's Wharf, but somehow it doesn't seem to be part of that particular Tourist Crazy. The San Remo is a treasure. If life takes me back to San Francisco, I'll certainly stay here again! Be kind to your budget and give this place a try!

Yelp
*Warning: Each room is significantly small, and bathrooms and showers are shared among everyone in the hotel. Pro: Staff seems to keep bathroom and shower area's clean! If you don't like the idea of sharing though, I don't recommend staying here. The San Remo "hotel" has so much personality and charm, also you can't really beat the price compared to neighboring hotels. I love the feel and look of it so much. There are multiple stairways leading to different floors... The indoor architecture and interior of the building is very exquisite. There is a lot of detail going into the decoration in order to make it feel 'old fashioned' and almost like an old European-ish feel. *Warning: It's easy to get lost among what seems to be hidden corridors everywhere! (It's honestly quite fun.) Pro: Complimentary beverages (coffee, tea, water... as well as candy snacks) Pro: Located in Fisherman's Warf, the San Remo is conveniently in walking distance to a lot of fun touristy parts of San Francisco. Con: I'm just going to share my story I had with the lady working at the front desk because of how rude she was to my mother and I. This is our second time staying here because of how enjoyable it was the first time we stayed. Our first time staying here, our room was located on the outer edge of the hotel so we were lucky enough to have a window that opened and allowed the fresh air into our room. This time, (our second time staying) we were not so lucky. We got a room that was located more towards the center of hotel where our only window was actually just facing a main hallway where tons of people were walking back and forth between rooms. We couldn't even open the blinds without allowing people to watch us and easily look into our room whether it was intentional they did or not. It made us rather uncomfortable 1) everyone was able to watch us and 2) it was so musty and gross inside, even when we opened our door to get a little air in, the same problem occurred where we just had absolutely no privacy and people kept walking past our tiny room. We were only staying for TWO night.. and on the last night we go to ask the lady at the front desk if it was at all possible to get a room change so we weren't that uncomfortable. In such a snobby rude tone she replies "Sure, you can change your room........ For $45.00 more dollars.) I get it, a business needs to make money some how... But honestly the room change was going to be for 12 hours at most, it was our last night, and this girl did not have to have such a snotty tone of voice with us, especially since we planned on being consistent guests. Our experience with the customer service and how poorly our second room experience was, is the reason this is now 3 stars instead of 5.

Yelp
On June 29, 2020 my reservation was cancelled by the hotel due to the Pandemic. It is now January 22, 2021 and I still have not received a refund. No one answers the phone/messages or emails. Really? One person can't continue to work just to process refunds? Horrible!

Yelp
Absolutely charming hotel in North Beach just a few blocks up from Fisherman's Wharf. Beautifully decorated. Feels a lot like a European hotel. Snacks available during the day. Darling rooms. Shared baths (dorm-style) that are clean and well-stocked. I love this hotel and you can't beat the price!

Yelp
There is a lot of character in this place. It's very unique to the world I live in at least. This place is corky and fun. Shared bathrooms have never been so great, but this hotel the experience to a different level than the rests. What I'm really trying to say that this place is weird, and I love that. Parking was hard to find but I'm horrible with maps so I can't knock it. I would stay here again. And several times over if I come back to this city.

Yelp
Would definitely stay again! We stayed 4 nights at this hotel. This was my Dad and I's first trip to San Francisco and this hotel was perfect for a tourist! Shared Baths/Showers: Like many others we were a little concerned about the shared bathrooms/showers. Once we arrived though our minds were quickly put at ease. Both the toilet rooms and showers were very clean. They also provided shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and even mouthwash. We stayed on the second floor, and there were two showers/toilets in the middle on the hallway and then down to one end only had one shower/toilet. We found the showers in the middle of the hallway were much better, because in front of those there was a little room to hang all your clothes and a chair to put your toiletry bag on. The shower at the end of the hall didn't have that little room and made it difficult since there was no table to put anything. If you are an early riser (before 8am), this is the ideal time to use the showers. We got up at 6am and had all the showers to ourselves. Bedroom: We had a room with two twin beds. Beds were more comfortable than I originally thought. The pillows could have been a little better though. I would HIGHLY recommend getting a room with a window to the outside. This is the ONLY reason I didn't give it 5 stars. Our room was in the middle of the hallway and without air conditioning or an outside window it was a little too warm for our taste, especially after walking around the city all day then coming back to a warm room was disappointing. Location/Price: We picked this hotel based on the price and location to Pier 39. For the amount we paid versus every other hotel I would always choose this hotel, hands down. When leaving the building, turn left. We didn't eat at the Italian restaurant because it seemed too fancy/expensive. But 1 block to the left is the end of the Cable Car line, one block right and a block or two up is the bus stop. Both take you to basically anywhere you want to go. If you go straight to the end is where Pier 39 is. You really couldn't ask for a better location. If you are on a budget and want to be within walking distance to everything than stay here, but remember to get a window to the outside.

Yelp
Sweet & unexpected. Came to SF for the Nike Women's Half and was debating on whether or not to splurge on a pricey hotel room or to suck it up and get something "budget." I went with budget (how much time do you really spend in a hotel room, anyway, right?) and am glad I did. This place was super cute. I can't get over it. Plants, plants, plants. Everywhere. I love pothos plants and they are allllllll over the hallways. There were even massage chairs! The staff was super helpful and have ice water, coffee, and little snacks available during office hours. It's within walking distance to the wharf, Trader Joe's, cable cars, and a number of restaurants. Parking is $18/day at a garage nearby. Don't let the shared bathrooms weird you out. There are private bathroom stalls (with no gaps in the doors and nice, loud fans) on each side of the floors, and private shower rooms. I highly suggest the back bathroom on the second floor-- there's a claw-foot tub with a shower and a window that has a beautiful view. And the bathrooms were ALWAYS clean.

Yelp
This is my favorite place to stay when visiting The City. The San Remo reminds me of small, family run hotels in Europe. The entire space is filled with antiques, skylights, and greenery. Each room has a personality of its own and is cozy and inviting. The staff is amazingly helpful and truly wants you to have a great visit. The bathrooms are down the hall, spotlessly clean, private, and well maintained. I had the good fortune to meet the owner during my last stay and he was genuinely interested in my opinion and suggestions. This hotel is a gem.

Yelp
The San Remo is a treasure in so many ways. To anyone with an appreciation for San Francisco history and architecture this place is a perfect choice- it was built in 1906. If you are a fan of the "Tales of the City" series, it totally has that Barbary Lane aura going on. Have stayed both in the rooftop Penthouse, and in the rooms below. The Penthouse has a wonderful cabin, perfect for two, perched on the hotel's roof with fantastic views of Coit Tower, North Beach, and Russian Hill with just a glimmer of the Golden Gate. The standard rooms are equally terrific, and the shared bathrooms are immaculately clean.. I'm not a huge fan of Fisherman's Wharf, which is just 2 blocks away- but the World War 2 Liberty Ship, Jeremiah O'Brien and the submarine USS Pompanito are well worth visiting, as is the Musee Mechanique with it's collection of antique mechanical games. The staff at San Remo have always been un-failingly polite and helpful, and you just can't get better value for money in San Francisco than this place.

Yelp
This is an old school "pension" with individual, small room and shared bathrooms/showers. There's enough facilities that I never had to wait. Everything is kept scrupulously clean. The staff are all polite and helpful. And there's extras like hot coffee, hot and cold water, pastries and candies available at the desk 24 hours a day. It's a short 5 blocks to the waterside, 1 block to a cable-car stop and 4 blocks to a trolley stop. If you don't NEED your own ensuite, then this is a tremendous bargain!

Yelp
I stayed at this hotel for one night after spending a few days in the Palo Alto region. Not unlike the other reviews I had reservations about staying at this location, but it's comparatively affordable pricing is what ultimately won me over. In short I had a very pleasant stay at this location. Location: Quiet location and I didn't encounter any issues with safety. The hotel is a short walk from Fisherman's Wharf (approx 8 min) and has a Trader Joe's a block away. Check In/Check out: Seamless. I checked in around 2pm and checked out at 4am the following morning. There's a key slot for you to drop your keys in the event that you have to leave before the front desk opens. Restroom/Showers: Communal toilets and showers are individually locked with sinks located on the outside. Toilets have the vintage chain pull flush mechanism. Towels and disposable combs are provided in the common area where the sinks are located. Bedroom: There's a quiet fan in every room that's operated by a knob near the entrance. I was unaware of any other form of cooling, but the fan was more than sufficient for me. I'm a relatively heavy sleeper so noise is not much of an issue for me, but the bed did creak when I shifted around. Disposable ear plugs are provided in each room, which should rectify this issue. The bed was a bit firm, which again I did not have any issue with. Other amenities: There are massage chairs and bookshelves located in different niches of the building. While the front desk is open, an assortment of refreshments is laid out for guests. Transportation: The hotel recommends a particular shuttle service for transportation to and from the airport. I used this service the morning after to catch my 6 am flight at SFO. I arrived at my flight on time and didn't encounter any issues, but a disclaimer would be that there were hardly any cars on the road at 5am so I'm not sure how they operate during more regular hours. General Notes/Observations: Has a very rustic environment. There's some music from the earlier decades of the 1900 playing in the background. If you want an idea of what that would sound like youtube 'Bioshock music' or something of that ilk. Floors creak, which might be an issue if you're a light sleeper, but again can be fixed with the provided ear plugs. I did not need the ear plugs and slept well. I do recommend this location. I'll be back in the west coast later this year so I know where to stay should I need lodging in San Fran.

Yelp
San Remo hotel was one of the only places in the area that was even remotely affordable ( and I'm saying that as a New Yorker). My fiance had booked the place and I hadn't even looked it up before we arrived so had no idea what to expect. I was questioning it a little bit when we first got there. The rooms are tiny and I've only had a handful of experience in hostel-like accommodations. We only stayed for one night and it happened to be on a record breaking temperature night. It was about 110 outside and we were on the top floor. Certainly, the hotel tried to keep as cool as possible with many large fans throughout the place and a ceiling fan in the room. It was so hot that the fans really didn't cut it. As this was an incredibly unusual situation, I guess it's not usually that hot. But man, it was HOT when we were there. WIth the heat aside, the hotel is so unique. I've never seen a place like it before. The rooms and bathrooms were very clean. There was sometimes a line of people out in the hallway, but we walked to the next closest bathroom, which never had a line. Overall, I think it was a pretty cool experience and I would definitely stay there again. Also...be sure to check out the massage chairs. I was really missing those chairs after our 11 mile hike a few days later!!

Yelp
What a charming, hauntingly antiquarian, little hotel. The location and price can't be beat ($100 bucks when others in the area were charging $250 and up). It's within 5-10 min walking distance to the Wharf and Piers. I was a little worried as I've stayed in a hostel before, which was cool in its own right, but I just didn't want to do that on this particular trip. The bathrooms and showers are shared. But oh my gosh, it was a wasted worry since the place was spotless clean, the shared bathrooms were more upper class dorm-style than hostel and the place just had such character! Our twin bed room was small but the beds were comfy. They were really high and there's wasn't anywhere to sit, but when I asked for a chair the staff quickly provided one with a smile. We did pay a little extra to have a sink in our room but now I realize that was unnecessary. The shared bathrooms are just fine. Sinks are separate in the center hall, and each floor has 2 individual toilets and 2 individual showers. There was a line for the shower only a couple times at the average busy morning time. But you can just go to a different floor and usually I was able to get in pretty quickly. I LOVED the massage chair facing a window which was hidden away in a little nook and the random books on the shelves. The teas, coffees and snacks in the lobby were a great treat. The halls are VERY narrow, especially with all the adornments and although the rooms are so close together, it was peculiarly quiet throughout. However, each night I did wake up around 3 am for no apparent reason and wander the halls looking at all the creepy old paraphernalia. You can't tell me this place isn't haunted. But if there are such things existing here, they're definitely friendly;-)
