Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, Klein Karoo, South Africa - Explore & Book

"Most visitors to the Western Cape drive straight through the Karoo; this vast expanse of desert-like wilderness may appear, at a glance, to have little worth stopping for. But if you do stop and absorb the wide changing skies, the carpets of spring flowers, the bizarre rocks, the turquoise river-pools and the fascinating wildlife, it works its slow magic on you. It certainly worked its magic on the South African entrepreneur who built Sanbona in 2001. Now owned by the Caleo Foundation, a not for profit conservation organisation, this 5-star lodge sits in 58,000 hectares of wildlife reserve. The area of undulating mountains and plains is surprisingly rich in flora and fauna: no fewer than 6,500 species of plant and 160 species of birds, live alongside the many wild animals such as native springboks, zebra and hyena, and the reintroduced 'big 5' (elephant, buffalo, rhino, lion, cheetah). But it is not only about game here. Rangers also show you bizarre rock formations, intricate fossils and 3,500-year-old rock art left by the San people, who lived in these hills until 100 years ago. And the sunsets are stupendous. Highs Arguably the best safari destination in the Western Cape: only a 3-hour drive from Cape Town along the scenic Route 62Unusually large conservation area for this region, giving a sense of wilderness with rich animal, bird and plant life and expert rangers to bring it alive for you Huge plush suites and those in the Dwyka Tented Lodge have private decks with hot tubs Lots to do besides game watching: massage and spa treatments, ancient rock art, guided nature hikes and stargazingA dedicated family lodge and kids programme with no risk of malaria make it an ideal choice for those travelling with children. Lows A huge reserve with few big mammals - don’t expect herds or frequent sightings. The Big Five are all present but not as concentrated as some other reserves, like the Kruger. The dry and open scenery can be hot in summer (but there's air-conditioning and a pool at the lodge), and cold in winterIt's not cheap, but all meals and safari drives are included" - Christina Franco

We had the most incredible time at Sanbona. It was the trip of a lifetime. Everything from the moment we arrived at the welcome lodge was absolutely perfect. Tilney Manor was so peaceful, comfortable and luxurious. The staff were incredibly warm and attentive and the service was impeccable. The food (and there was LOTS) was always delicious and varied. But nothing stands up to the incredible reserve. Our guide, Jordan, was such an expert and made our game drives truly unforgettable experiences. Every drive brought a new and wonderful experience - we saw giraffes, elephants, rhinos, lions, cheetah, baboons, zebra, and much more! The conservation work and research they're doing is amazing! Can't recommend it more highly and we desperately want to go back!

An unforgettable experience from start to finish! The game drives were breathtaking – we saw lions, elephants, giraffes, rhinos, and more, all in their natural habitat. Our field guide was knowledgeable and passionate, making each drive both thrilling and insightful. The food was exceptional, every meal a treat. The accommodation was out of this world – luxurious, peaceful, and beautifully designed. Add to that the warm and professional service from every staff member, and you have the perfect getaway. Sanbona is a true gem – we left with incredible memories and can’t wait to return.

We visited Sanbona after a recommendation from Friends who visited the Safari a couple of years ago.||From start to finish our excitement was met and exceeded in spending time finding the animals to chilling in the huge rooms. Safari days are started with an early morning wake up call, but everything is catered to, from beverages and snacks in the room, to buffets and freshly cooked food for breakfast. Then we have hot water bottles in the car for keeping you warm on safari and blankets too. we could listen to our guide and chill watching the animals forever if we could. It was such an amazing experience. My husband also used the spa facilities and these were incredible. A particular highlight was having lunch in the middle of nowhere but the set up was like a 5 star restaurant with even a loo available. Also, the nightly drinks reception out in the bush was cool too. We can't rave enough about the experience there.

Sanbona was the highlight of our trip! The staff was incredibly attentive and friendly, the food was incredible, and the views were outstanding whether you were out on safari, sitting by the pool, or simply sitting in your room. We were here for ~4 days and each safari ride was better than the last thanks to our fantastic guide!

My girlfriend and I visited Sanbona for 2 nights and we had the most amazing time. We're both very well-traveled (both for work and for leisure, as travel is each of our favorite things to do) and our experience in Sanbona was honestly our favorite trip we've ever taken. The tents and grounds were stunning, the staff was phenomenal, and our game drives just could not have gone better. I will be recommending Sanbona to friends, family, coworkers, anyone who will listen! I cannot WAIT to return one day. The emphasis on conservation, research, and quality over quantity of animals in the habitat made this reserve so special.

Sanbona wildlife reserve was stunning and offered a five star safari experience. Located in the Little Karoo about three hours from Cape Town, the expedition was first-class. We hired transportation from Cape Town to reduce stress and arrived on-time so we could experience the evening game drive and a sunset cocktail overlooking the hippos. The food and service were outstanding. Every morning at 7am we had a beautiful buffet of granola, yogurt, fruit and cheeses and with a hot breakfast and lattes! At 7:45 we prepared for our game drive, the hot water bottles were a lifesaver. Marco, our game driver was superb! Every drive we experienced new animals. Over 6 drives we saw giraffes, elephants, rhinos, lions, cheetahs, hippos, zebras, springbok, birds, and more. The picnic lunch overlooking the mountains and the star-gazing Braai were highlights of the trip. We also enjoyed massages, beautiful lunches on the patio and excellent dinners in the main dining room. The accommodations were also amazing with yoga mats and foam rollers, heated floors and towel racks and comfortable beds with. Sanbona was the perfect first time Safari experience if you want to skip the trip to Kruger. |We had an amazing adventure and fell in love with South Africa.||Tips: The game drives take place around 8am and 3pm in the winter months and earlier and later in the summer, depending on sunrise and sunset. Bring warm clothes in the winter, driving can be cold in the morning. We stayed three nights and that was 6 drives. It is recommended to bring $350 Rand per day per couple for your guide and a tip of your choosing for the staff. The do not accept foreign currency but you can add tip to you final bill.

This was one of the best experiences I’ve had. We saw so many animals and we got to get so close! The animals would walk right by and totally ignore the vehicle. Our guide was knowledgeable and had answers to all of our questions. The place is so big. They have trackers on some of the animals so you will see all of them. They don’t interfere with animals and they are great with the conservation. Definitely worth paying for. The rooms are so big and nice. There is a pool and spa. Drives are about 3 hours long. The workers are all so nice and care about your stay. All of the food is included and believe me you will never go hungry, the food is amazing. There are different lodges including a family lodge so you won’t have kids on your drives. Defiantly would tell everyone to go there, it’s amazing!
