Gorgeous sanctuary which interior has a single nave and a gilded, carved wooden high altar with spiral columns, from which, in the center, the venerated statue of Our Lady of Nazaré stands enthroned.
The walls at the ends of the transept are covered with magnificent early 18th-century blue and white faience tiles by the Dutch master W. Van Kloet, depicting scenes from the Old Testament. In the sacristy, several 17th-century paintings recount the legend associated with Our Lady of Nazaré.
In 1377, King Ferdinand commissioned the construction of the original church to house the sacred image and accommodate the large number of pilgrims visiting Our Lady of Nazaré, making it the oldest and most important Portuguese Marian shrine until the 20th century.
Hardly altered and enlarged during subsequent reigns, the current building, with its Baroque profile, reveals the significant transformations that took place at the end of the 17th century.
