No Safari Is Complete Without a Night Game Drive—Here Are 10 of the Best

"Botswana’s vast Okavango Delta is home to hundreds of diverse species, including many after-dark revelers: hyenas, lions, leopards, bush babies, and pangolins, to name a few. Night safaris aren’t allowed everywhere in the delta, but you can enjoy one with a stay at Sanctuary Retreats’ Stanley’s Camp—the site of my eye-popping night drive on A&K’s Botswana Safari in Style itinerary. The luxe tented camp flings you into the wild, with porches and a plunge pool overlooking a watering hole, plus inventive local and international cuisine made even more enjoyable by the soundtrack of nearby hippo grunts."

Outstanding and authentic safari in the Botswanan Delta. Expert guides, friendly staff and first rate attention to detail. Our guide tracked a female leopard, got up close to a massive bull elephant and visited a pride of lions including their playful cubs. Saw numerous hippos, giraffe and buffalo. And of course baboon, warthog, wildebeest and the ubiquitous antelope.

I had an amazing experience on my trip. The place was beautiful, and every moment felt special. I especially loved exploring new sights and meeting friendly people along the way. It was a refreshing break that filled me with happiness and left me with memories I’ll always treasure. This trip reminded me how important it is to enjoy the little things and live in the moment.

This was our 2nd time staying here, first in 5/15. They had done some modern renovations on the lodge & dining room area. We stayed here for 4 nights & our room was No. 3 & was very spacious, clean, quiet & comfortable. All 3 meals & drinks are included with G & T & even cocktails. You must try Pina Colada, it was the best & made by Ooma! Our game drive guide was Sampson who was very knowledgeable & |friendly. The highlights for us included a leopard on a tree, lions with a buffalo kill, |hyenas with cubs & 10 painted dogs pursuing impala. We saw the Big 4 except the Rhino. |One day we had an elephant walk past outside our tent to the other side of the |park. It was amazing! |The sunrises & sunsets everyday were spectacular with multiple colours. |Free Wifi in the room with good reception. Free laundry service everyday. All meals were delicious & well presented. 5 stars personal treatment from all staff & they all|are super friendly & attentive.

Our tour company Abercrombie and Kent choose this camp as part of our safari. One of the best parts of the camp is the Staff who are always kind and caring. Every detail was taken care of including laundry (pressed shirts/pants)and special dietary requests served with careful attention to detail and taste. |On our final night the staff set up a beautiful sundowner next to a large hippo pool. We shared the sundowner with 20 hippos and a couple from Germany who had stayed at this camp five years running (and recommends staying here in the future). |The weather felt warm especially without air conditioning but the decks had good cross-breezes. Lions were present every night including a large male wandering into camp at sundown. Staff was concerned and diligent about our safety walking us to and fro from our tent. |I loved waking up to the light streaming through the white linen curtains and mosquito netting. Very peaceful and beautiful!

This was the first of our three stays in Sanctuary Retreat Camps (each for three nights). Our accommodation was excellent and large, with their signature ‘tented large King beds’. Excellent hanging and storage spaces and double sinks in the bathroom. “Shoutout” to all Sanctuary Retreats for their gorgeous toiletries … cruelty free … “Healthy Earth”. There was a large deck overlooking a green open area where wildlife would wander through. We were a short walk from the main area, and, as the camp was not fenced, it was necessary to be escorted to/from our room/main area after sunset.||The general area consisted of a great library (best place for Wi-Fi), with an excellent display of photos of Sir Henry Morton Stanley GCB with plenty of sofas, chairs, etc., a bar and dining area. There was a short boardwalk to the swimming pool which was another great place for wildlife spotting.||Food (too much 😉 as in all Lodges!), wine choices, etc. were all extremely good. We also enjoyed five Safari Jeep tours with Zero during our three days and all were excellent with so much wildlife. Zero was an excellent guide/driver who found plenty of lions, elephants, giraffes, etc., etc.||A great stay and a wonderful introduction to the Sanctuary Retreat Lodges and many thanks to Basadi and her team.

We traveled to Stanley’s Camp in June which is winter in Botswana. This means hot days and cold nights. ||We had come from another camp which did not provide climate control. Stanley’s on the other hand did an excellent job as they offer Dyson heaters/ac in every room. They even pull curtains down to assist with warmth at night. ||Stanleys offers intimate dinner settings with menu service. The food was SUPERB. I had the best steak I’ve ever had in my life!||Stanley’s overlooks a large flat plain area which has an abundance of animals such as elephants, monkeys, baboons, wildebeest, etc. The amount of animals you will see is innumerable. ||Our stay at Stanley’s figuratively saved our vacation as it was so much better than our other camp. THE BEST!!!

This was our first really authentic African safari experience. We stayed in luxurious tents overlooking grasslands with the sound of birds and animals constantly around us – amazing! We were so well looked after by the wonderful staff with incredible attention to detail – small touches like turning on our electric blankets for a warm bed when we came back after dark on the freezing nights. The camp manager Basadi was outstanding – she could not have been more helpful and we really appreciated her kindness and warmth.||The food was absolutely delicious and there was so much of it. Well done to Gareth and his team for feeding us so well. Thank you also to TJ, Gao, OT for serving us at every meal with such a beautiful smile, Tshidi, Lucy and others whose names I’ve forgotten (sorry!). They were all brilliant.||A huge thank you to our guide Fred who was outstanding in every way – knowledgeable, funny, an extraordinary tracker. We saw so many amazing animals, even after the sun went down with Fred shining his spotlight on hidden creatures. We just can’t say enough good things about Fred and felt so lucky to have him as our personal guide.||We saw a huge pride of lions within 15 minutes of driving from the lodge, plus a leopard, masses of beautiful birds, kudu, giraffes, elephants, tsessebe, a nocturnal genet, civet (also seen at night) and lots of impala. There were so many ‘wow!’ moments when we were on safari.||The accommodation was outstanding with everything we could possibly need. Even though we were in tents, once the blinds were down, we were cosy and with the electric blankets and beautiful bedding we slept soundly. Thank you to all the staff at Stanley’s particularly Basadi and her fabulous team – we felt like part of the Stanley’s family by the time we left. A truly memorable stay!|

Flying down from their retreat susi& Chuma which was excellent, the service of the staff that greeted us was inspiring and the treatment just went higher. My guide Zero was inspiring with his knowledge of the trails and he taught me a little of how to track the game.
